This is story that is intelligent, clever and engaging, balanced with just the right amounts of danger, suspense and intrigue.

Intrigue & Suspense would describe this book. Impressive would describe Sarah Cain!! I thoroughly enjoyed reading One by One, even though I hadn’t read the previous Danny Ryan Thriller.

Greg Moss, an old high school acquaintance of Danny, asks him to look into some ominous text messages he has been receiving. Greg's finds out that several of his old high buddies also received threatening texts, before they were murdered. And then Greg is murdered.
Danny begins his investigation working off the idea that Greg's murder, along with the earlier deaths of his football buddies, are somehow linked to the past. When an attempt is made on the life of one of the people he interviews, who Greg knew in high school & is currently still in contact with, Danny remains unsure of a possible motive for the murders. When another person from high school he interviewed dies, Danny knows he is on the right track. His former classmates are less than forthcoming with him so his investigation hits a dead end.
Will he be able to make the connection before anyone else winds up dead?

Thank you NetGalley, the publisher & author for this advanced copy in exchange for my honest opinion!

Can you really escape your past? I had not read the first Danny Ryan novel but that didn't matter because this one quickly wrapped me in. The plot revisits the theme of old friends first threatened and then picked off one by one but Cain has managed to add some unique details. Liked the atmospheric Philadelphia setting. This is a well written page turner that didn't flag for me. THanks to Netgalley for the ARC-I'm looking forward to more from Cain.

Okay, so after The 8th Circle, I was expecting BIG things from Cain in this next Danny Ryan novel. And, boy, did she ever deliver! ALL of the characters have such vivacity and depth. They are flawed and dysfunctional, but real and raw and very identifiable.

Danny is still struggling with his "new reality". But, once he learns that some of his old, high school friends have been murdered, his "journalist sense" kicks in, and he's determined to ferret out the truth and make sure justice is served and his friends are avenged. What follows is a story that is smart, clever and engaging, balanced with just the right amounts of danger, suspense and intrigue.

Once again, Cain has thoroughly entertained and impressed me, and I can't wait to see what comes next in the world of Danny Ryan!

*I received a complimentary ARC copy of this book from NetGalley & Crooked Lane Books in order to read and provide an honest, unbiased and voluntary review, should I choose to do so.
