Bruce and Andrew are two best friends living in their camper van that they also use to drive around looking for people to con out of their money. This money is then to be used to help them to fly to France to become a Chef and a Poet.

I chose this book because I thought that the premise sounded fun and lighthearted, and it was. However I found that the humour was a little too slapstick for me, I felt , at times, as though I was reading the outline of an Adam Sandler movie or a remake of Dumb and Dumber.

It was a short fun read and did make me laugh at points, but it needed more fleshing out of the characters and some moments of emotion to stop it from being a book that was constantly scraping the barrel for laughs.

This book made me laugh out loud, all you need to do to be enjoyed is to read this book too. Especially if you like languages the way I do. An unique read.

A great and humorous read. Pick this up and keep it in your arsenal for the next time you need a pick-me-up.

Rather silly and something of a disappointment. I was expecting more.

I chose to read Confrontational French by Jonny Effing Lucas to meet a book club challenge.
Bruce and Andrew are best friends living and driving in an old VW camper looking for "doorbells", their term for "marks", to con and get enough money to fly to France and fulfill their lifelong dream of becoming a poet and chef in Paris.
When they meet Charlotte, a blind girl with her own agenda, there is a change in dynamics.
I could not connect with the characters in the story and found the storyline and language juvenile. So this is not my type of book, which shows in my rating.
This book might appeal to readers who enjoy madcap stories. The humour in this story is "over the top" and reminds me of 'Dumb and Dumber' and 'Blazing Saddles'. So this book should also appeal to those who enjoyed those movies and would thus rate higher.

2 stars.

Thanks to NetGalley and the Jonny Effing Lucas for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher, who provided me with a copy of this title in exchange for an honest review.

This book is, frankly, Dumb and Dumber or Stepbrothers as conmen. If that's your thing and you're looking for a short, snappy, and humourous read, this book is for you.

My biggest gripe is that I wanted more plot and less shtick. The massive plot hole- how they go from the first chapter as kids to grown and essentially just as immature- disappointed me. How did they end up there? What about Bruce's parents?

The book feels like it is written in hopes of becoming a comedy movie (hence my references above). It's written very visually and did make me laugh to myself several times. The female protagonist was excellent but I wanted more of her background as well. Without filling in the gaps a bit more, the characters seemed to fall a bit flat.

Good story for a quick read, but it isn't going to set the world alight.

I did not finish this book as I did not engage with this story at all.

This book was a little bit funny but I feel like I wasn't its intended audience. I must have missed some of its humour.

It's honestly hard to say whether I liked this book or not. It does feel like a mishmash of Dumb and Dumber (which someone else stated in another review) and Saving Silverman. It has its funny moments, but it is not really my type of book.

Thanks Netgalley for the free book and a chance to read a book I wouldn't normally pick up.

A very humor filled escapade with two con men that completely butcher the French language! This might have been a book that I might have missed on the store shelves, but I am so glad that I discovered it on NetGalley. It was a truly enjoyable read.

Reach out and read this book! Especially when you're in need of a good laugh!

This book was written as a big ol' comedy sketch that I just didn't get. And, when the opening chapter is about Andrew's parents dying in a plane crash, I am not set up for a humor filled book. Then there is this great leap forward to them roaming around supposedly conning people so they can earn money to fly to France. But why are they ready to move to France? No clue as to how they got to this spot, no clue how old they are. Frankly, they acted like they were still little kids. I loved the movie Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure and wonder if I would have felt the same confusion reading it as a book instead of seeing it as a movie. But this felt more like Dumb & Dumber. At no point did I laugh other than at their stupidity. That's not a book I want to read.
