"You shouldn't hold on to the past...everything changes."
This is the second in a trilogy featuring public prosecutor Jana Berzelius. Set in Norrkoping, Sweden, this fast-paced police procedural focuses on the rampant drug trade and child trafficking. When a young Thai girl dies on a train and is found stuffed with capsules of heroin, the team of detectives that Jana works with tries to find out what happened to the friend who was traveling with the dead girl. In addition, Jana finds that this case has ties to her horrific past, and a man known as Danilo -- he knows all about her and she can't have him reveal her secrets. But there is worse to come when Jana's investigation reveals that someone close to her has ties to the network of crime. NO SPOILERS.
I love this series and have now read all three -- though, unfortunately, out of order as I read #3 first before I realized it. The books are very well-written and grab hold quickly with complex plots and interesting characters that have developed more with each book. The police team members are unique individuals and there is an occasional foray into their personal lives but most of the narrative is focused on the development of the case and the facets of investigation. Jana Berzelius herself is quite a complex woman with amazing fighting skills learned when she was a child. She's rather cold as a person and definitely keeps her private life, thoughts and feelings to herself so she has difficulty in creating or sustaining any relationships. Her tough exterior completely masks her inner turmoil but she is intent on succeeding at any cost. Destroy or be destroyed.
I'd like to thank Amazon Vine for a paperback ARC of this book to read and review. When I finished book #3, I thought there might be another book to follow because it seemed to leave many dangling questions and the story seemed unfinished. I'll definitely want to read more about Jana Berzelius in the future.

This one was just okay for me. I didn't enjoy it as much as I did the first book in the series. I am not completely sold on the main character, Jana. I liked her better in the first book. The storyline was okay, but didn't keep me captivated. I hope the next book will be better.

Marked for Revenge, the second novel following prosecutor Jana Berzelius, by Emelie Schepp was a book I was eager to get my hands on. Having read (and enjoyed!) Schepp's Marked For Life, I couldn’t wait to get more of Jana's backstory. I was not disappointed. Schepp provides much more to the story in book two, of what I am assuming, will be a trilogy.
I, once again, loved the character development of Jana. As she becomes more entrenched into discovering bits of her old lifestyle, her character became even more complex. In fact, Schepp seems to excel at developing complex characters. Even the secondary characters in this police procedural have story arcs that intertwine. However, like I felt in the first novel, I found that there was way too much information involving the characters and I found it hard to get lost in the story. I was too busy trying to figure out who everyone was and what everyone was doing to really lose myself in the plot.
I also found, on a technical note that the digital copy formatted strange on my Kindle; this also disrupted my reading.
Overall, I enjoyed the story as a follow up but feel people would struggle to read it as a standalone. I would strongly encourage any reader to read the first book before attempting this one.

Jana Berzelius is the main character in this, the second in what I believe is a trilogy. Not having read the first book, I struggled to keep the characters and storylines apart and it wasn't till towards the second half of the story that I managed to fully immerse myself in the lives of the protagonists. Even though I couldn't like a single one of them, not even Jana, I did enjoy the book on the whole. The theme of drug mules was quite an eye opener, horrifying to think there are people so desperate they would actually become a mule, plus the fact they could actually manage the process.
Thank you, Netgalley and the publisher for the eARC.

Marked for Revenge by Emelie Schepp is the second installment to one of the best and darkest thrillers ever. Immediately, I was drawn into the web of darkness. One that definitely surrounds the main character, Jana Berzelius. A prosecutor who goes to danger's most i inviting places to get what she needs. Answers. Things like secrets, betrayals, and suspense have their way of always making it into Emelie Schepp's novels. I felt compelled to know more. Even if that meant following, Jana Berzelius, to her death.
The characterization is amazing. I got more of an insider's scoop with this book. More information on the main character's life, is unveiled. Emelie Schepp has created another compelling read. She makes organized crime like child trafficking into one of the most horrendous nightmares yet. While, I wish these crimes were not being committed at all, the reality and fear of what happens is perfectly caught within this novel. The plot is fast-paced, complex, and bone chilling. Captivating, frightening, and engaging...Marked for Revenge is definitely a recommended read for all.
