Well-written thriller - gritty and gory. Based on the Zodiac Killer and the start of a new series. I really like the character, Caitlin Hendrix. She's strong and intuitive as she chases the killer through some very strange clues. I will look forward to the next book.

Thanks to Meg Gardiner and Penguin Group Dutton through Netgalley for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

The Prophet terrorized the Bay Area 20 years ago. He left 11 victims behind each killed in a horrific way ... and then he disappeared.

Caitlin Hendrix is a new Narcotics Detective when The Prophet seems to reappear. This is the monster she has nightmares about. Her father, Mack, was the lead detective when The Prophet was first known. Mack almost lost his sanity over his failure to catch this guy .... his partner was killed ... and Mack tried to kill himself.

Now Caitlin must face her biggest fear. Two bodies are found, each bearing the same injuries as his earlier victims. The bodies are mutilated and he sends notes ... the only clues he leaves for the police.

Although her father tries to warn her as she draws closer to the killer with each new killing.

Is it a copycat, or can this really be the same Prophet who haunted her childhood? Will Caitlin avoid repeating her father’s mistakes and redeem her family name, or will chasing the Prophet drag her and everyone she loves into the depths of the abyss? (from book synopsis)

Excellent psychological thriller! Kept me glued from the very first page to the explosive sending. I have read a few of this author's earlier books ... she has really mastered her craft. The characters are credible and I really enjoyed the relationship between Caitlin and her father.... and the relationship between Caitlin, her FBI boyfriend, Sean, Sean's ex-wife and daughter.

Another book featuring Caitlin Hendrix will be out sometime next year. INTO THE BLACK NOWHERE. I will be watching for it ... will you?

Many thanks to the author / PENGUIN GROUP Dutton / Netgalley for the digital copy. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

There's nothing particularly original about this book, but that's not a criticism. In my opinon, a book doesn't have to be completely original to be a good read. This is a great example. I thoroughly enjoyed this author's writing style and the fast pace and subject matter of this book. Recommended if you like serial killer-y page-turners.

Caitlin Hendrix is working on the homicide case that ruined her father's life. After 20 years, this serial killer, The Prophet, has turned back up. Caitlin enlists her father to bring her into the loop on his knowledge of this serial killer and his victims. She has to solve the case before she spirals down the same path as her father did.

Unsub has great characters, a wonderfully thrilling storyline, and lots of action! It is a winner by Gardiner! Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of the book in return for an honest review.

Unsub by Meg Gardner is the first book that I've read from this author. And it certainly won't be my last. Unsub is a tension filled thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat! Great characters and a creepy serial killer kept me turning pages quickly. I'm hoping Caitlin will get her own series.

So a couple of years ago there was a Meg Gardiner book that I wanted to read but never got around to it. I've heard several times that I should pick up one of her books. When I saw this offered on Netgalley I requested it right away and I'm so thankful that I was accepted because I will never hesitate again to pick up a Meg Gardiner book!

This was an unpredictable mystery. After Caitlin watched her father diminish from trying to capture the Prophet as a young child, when the time comes for her shot at doing something her father couldn't, she goes all in. The Prophet is back and intent on dragging Caitlin into the investigation. From there, the action doesn't stop. This book pulled me in and didn't let go till the last pages and even after that I wanted more!! The ending was a WTF kind of moment and I just know that I'll be eagerly awaiting more.

I received an ARC copy of this book via Netgalley and Penguin Group Dutton Books in exchange for an honest review.

Alright, aside from the fact the summary was what drew me to the book initially a friend has been talking about this book for a while and telling me I HAD to read it.

I wasn't disappointed at all. I do think that the fictional killer in this was reminiscent of the Zodiac Killer in the 60's. I was reminded of that when I read this novel, from the Prophet and the way the novel comes together in the end,but that's not a bad thing. Meg Gardiner can easily write a great book. The writing was pointed and none of the reveals in the novel felt "shoe horned" in. It felt natural in reading and that's the sign of a great mystery as well
as great plotting. I was into this even if it did take me a few days. What kept me interested, through the times I had other things to do, was a capable, intelligent, strong main character in Caitlin Hendrix. I wanted to know what was in store for her and judging from the ending I don't think this is the last of the character (which is a good thing and I sort of hope this is the start of a series with this character because I'd read more). Unfortunately, some of the side characters didn't work for me but I'd give it a re-read later to see if that changes.

But regardless, I'd read another book with these characters in this universe and I'm looking forward to seeing more work from this author.

I hope there is going to be another book. I enjoyed reading this one. At first l wasn't sure that I would like it, there was a lot of information about the main character right away in a short space. Once the story got started it was great. I hope this will be a series.

Loved this book! Very unique storyline with lots of forensic information. It is very satisfying to see The Prophet caught in the end. The reveal of who the killer is and what is going on in his twisted mind is a shocker. Loved the family dynamics and the loyal friendships in the story too. Good read.

Caitlin Hendrix's memories of father, Mack, were of his trying to apprehend a vicious serial killer, who was dubbed as "the Prophet." Her childhood was surrounded by photos of vicious torture and killings at the hand of the Prophet. Her father became immersed and obsessed with finding this murderer. Just when he thought he and his partner, Saunders, had pinned the Prophet down, a newly wedded couple ended up dead. When his partner gave chase, Saunders was murdered. His partners death sent Mack in a downward spiral of depression and a mental breakdown. Seeing her fathers breakdown, Caitlin decided that she would follow in his footsteps with a career in law enforcement. After twenty plus years, The Prophet has resurfaced and has started his terrorizing and killing spree once again. Caitlin has become very involved with the case and is right in the center of the investigation. The Prophet taunts the law enforcement agency with poems and riddles, and videos of his tormenting his victims, exhibiting his intellectual games. Caitlin is involved with Sean, a federal agent, who's speciality is in explosives. He understands her and her background. The two support each other in their careers and their fight for justice. I enjoyed this psychological thriller immensely. The pages were constantly turning. The mystery and intrigue were constant. The characters were so believable and exhibited everyday emotions that the reader could relate to. The plot was fantastic!! The descriptions of the scenes were colorful and transported the reader through the book. Will Caitlin break the code of The Prophets killing spree? How many more will die at the hands of The Prophet? What is his reasoning for torturing and killing his victims? Will Sean become involved in this investigation? I can't say enough about this book. I will be looking for more great books from this author. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I know you will too.

Oh, this was a wild ride of a book.

It’s gruesome, unpredictable, and seems to be first in a series. There’s a cliffhanger here, folks, though the book does tie most things up pretty well.

Now, I’ll be honest. I never really bought into our earnest young cop. The only things she seems to have going for her are her last name and a hot boyfriend. Yet, she ends up on the homicide task force chasing a horrendous serial killer. And some of the revelations she has during the case stretched my credibility a bit.

However, I was a bit too intent on finding out just what was happening and who was doing it to care.

The author gives us a series of grotesque and very unique scenarios here. I was surprised each time –and given the number of thrillers and mysteries I read, it can be hard to surprise me.

I want the next book now. I have a suspicion and I wonder if I’m right. Now, every blasted one of my suspicions in book 1 was completely wrong, so I think I’ll be wrong in book 2 as well, but I can’t wait to find out!

A very good thriller!

Nonstop action and suspense, this serial killer chiller was impossible to put down!

Narcotics detective, Caitlin Hendrix, is called into Homicide for the desperate search for a serial killer who her father, former Detective Mack Hendrix, could not catch. The Prophet. After a killing spree in the 1990s, this UNSUB went dark for 20 years and has now come back with a vengeance. The Prophet leaves notes and plays games with the investigators leading them to scenes out of hell itself. Caitlin and her team work frantically to anticipate what this maniac is going to do next, and try to figure out WHY. The clues and murders continue and Caitlin is falling down the rabbit hole into obsession, just as her father before her did.

Great story line and writing, it kept me engaged with just the right amount of tension. The characters were typical of this genre, always a little messed up psychologically, but believable. I got the feeling that this might be the first of a new series, so will be on the lookout for another featuring Caitlin Hendrix.

Rookie homicide detective Caitlin Hendrix is definitely familiar with "The Prophet" case--it was her father's nemesis in the '90s. But now the killings have started again and authorities aren't sure if its the same person or a copycat. The case drove her father to the brink of madness; will Caitlin be able to catch The Prophet without losing herself in the process?

UNSUB is a terrific read from a veteran author. Not only will you want to keep reading every waking moment, you definitely won't see the ending coming.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of UNSUB in exchange for an honest review.

The Prophet was a serial killer who terrorized the Bay area in the 1990’s. His victims were all marked with the sign of Mercury carved into their flesh. Homicide detective Mack Hendrix was obsessed with solving the case and catching the killer. His failure to do so nearly cost him his family and his sanity, and it marked the end of his career with the police force. Twenty years later, two victims with the same carvings are found on the Prophet’s old hunting ground. Caitlyn Hendix has followed in her father’s footsteps and become a cop, and she’s just as determined as her father was to solve the case. Mack knows his life was destroyed by the Prophet and begs his daughter to stay clear of the case, but Caitlyn doesn’t have a choice – the Prophet has made her his new project. Meg Gardiner is the gold standard when it comes to suspense, and this story knocked by socks off. Read it with the light on
