Another great edition of Buzz Books. I don't read many YA novels, but I am looking forward to the release of The One Memory of Flora Banks and The End of Our Story.

I love these previews! After reading this season's previews I immediately requested three of the books from my local library. I'm especially excited for Flame in the Mist by Reneé Ahdieh.

I found some new books that I would like to read and I went ahead and added them on Goodreads. I can't wait to get to them all.

This compilation on YA upcoming novels was amazing. I can't wait to read many of them. Specifically, I am extremely excited for Flame in the Mist and The One Memory of Flora Banks. The Buzz Books have become an amazing resource for new releases to look forward to. The summaries provide a great foundation for the forthcoming hottest reads of the season and give me a great way of prioritizing which novels should be first on my TBR list. Thank you for always providing an amazing selection.

I liked some of the excerpts in this book. Wish I could've read more

There is one major reason I’m not a frequent YA reader; I struggle a bit with suspending disbelief, meaning fantasy and I don’t get along very well. While it seems most of the popular YA books are in the fantasy realm lately, I still decided to peruse this compilation to see if there was anything that might grab my attention. Something I might consider stepping outside of the box for. The only book, of the numerous excerpts, that interested me in any capacity, was Aftercare Instructions by Bonnie Pipkin. With that said, I’m not sure about a portion of the story being delivered in a play-like format.

I didn’t walk away with any must-reads, but I kind of expected that going in. This would be a great way for a YA reader to narrow down selections though.

One of the best ways to find out about new exciting releases! My go-to catalogue every month.

A good preview of YA for netgalley reviewers which includes an excerpt and the publishing details like agent and editor etc. I focused on realistic contemporary YA. Below are the YA I liked best from the excerpts:

This is Really Happening by Erin Chack: a Millennial memoir about surviving cancer as a teen into early adulthood.

The End of Our Story by Meg Haston: a contemporary YA set in Florida

Aftercare Instructions by Bonnie Pipkin: a girl is abandoned by her boyfriend while getting an abortion. I love the narrative, but I'm not sure about the dramatized flashbacks that are written like a theatrical skit.

*Geekerella by Ashley Poston: a contemporary retelling of Cinderella set in the sci fi fandom world. I can't wait to read this book - strong voice and original concept!

Rebels Like Us by Liz Reinhardt: a biracial romance challenges the southern tradition of separate black and white proms. I love the premise and that the black MC defies stereotype by coming from an affluent NYC background, not the hood, before moving to the south, but there has been criticism by black reviewers about how the white author handles race.

*Gem & Dixie by Sara Zara: a contemporary YA about two low income sisters struggling with hunger and social issues. This felt fresh and meaningful. Sara Zarr writes beautifully.

I plan to read my starred excerpts, although I'm late for requesting galleys. The others are maybes.

I love the way this book is set up. You get to see the cover, a summary, an excerpter and get to know about the author of each upcoming book. I didn't know what to expect when I requested this but it really does help me know what books I would want to get as soon as they are available.

OMG so much to read, so little time! Buzz Books 2017 gives a great foretaste of this spring's/summer's publications. I'm most excited about Renee Ahdieh's Flame in the Mist, set in medieval Japan. Sign me up for this big adventure. Other titles that appealed to me are Dream Me by Kathryn Berla (sci-fi), Roar by Cora Carmack (fantasy), Laugh Out Loud by James Patterson and Chris Grabenstein (about a kid whose biggest dream it is to be a book publisher ❤) and Geekerella by Ashley Poston (the title says it all 😃 ). Also Rebels Like Us by Liz Reinhardt could become an important book, especially these days. I already look forward to devouring all these new YA titles!

Good starting point if you are looking for ideas on what to read. You will need to have plenty of time as you are likely to end up with a long to read pile.

I was gifted this ebook via Netgalley.

The Flame in the Mist by Renee Ahdieh [5 stars]: The beginning shocked me - I had my jaw hit the floor. Mariko is a very likeable character from the short excerpt I read and I felt the writing style was very beautiful and easy to read in such a short time. Looking forward to reading this one for sure!

The One Memory of Flora Banks by Emily Barr [5 stars]: I love amnesia books and it pains me to read a short excerpt and then be left hanging. Like Ariel...I want moreeeeee! :)

Dream Me by Kathryn Berla [2.5 stars]: The excerpt was very wordy and where the one perspective is dystopia/sci fi, the other is contemporary. Or that's how it reads to me so far and I don't get how that would make for a good book.

Future Threat by Elizabeth Briggs [skipped]: This is the second book in a trilogy that I have not started.

Piper Perish by Kayla Cagan [1 star]: That was a ridiculously pretentious MC. Incredibly judgmental too.

Roar by Cora Carmack [2 stars]: The premise sounded very interesting, but upon reading the excerpt I'm not sure I want to read the book anymore. I really don't like the prince at all and I'm not a fan of how it is written. It's almost like a change in POV without being first person, but almost seeming like first person. That doesn't make much sense, but that's how it comes off to me.

This Is Really Happening by Erin Chack [4 stars]: This is a memoir from a Buzzfeed senior writer. The little excerpt was about when she shaved her head after starting treatment for Hodgkin's Lymphoma. It was well written; nothing wrong with it. I probably won't read the book, but it wasn't bad by any means.

Dividing Eden by Joelle Charbonneau [3 stars]: It wasn't bad, but it didn't blow me out of the water. I can tell that it won't be something I will like, but I think a lot of people would like it :)

Spirit Quest by Jennifer Frick-Ruppert [skipped]: I tried to read this but couldn't get into it.

The Black Witch by Laurie Forest [skipped]: Attempted to read this one as well, but the writing is very very basic and choppy.

James Patterson presents How To Be a Supervillain [3.5 stars]: Really cute and I think my older kids would like it :)

The End of Our Story by Meg Haston [2 stars]: Not my favorite kind of contemporary. I'm sure others will like it though.

Laugh Out Loud by James Patterson and Chris Grabenslein [2 stars]: The premise is great with a child wanting to have a book company. My older two kids actually have their own "company" where they make comics together. But the voice is so young and almost spazzy.

Aftercare Instructions by Bonnie Pipkin [5 stars]: I won an ARC in a Goodreads giveaway and I have an ARC via Netgalley and now I MUST read the full book. It was excellent. Touching on a very touchy subject as well (abortion).

Geekerella by Ashley Poston [5 stars]: I love a Cinderella retelling and was excited to hear about one with Geek culture in it (even if it's an offbrand geek culture). I was surprised with the dual perspective in this excerpt but now I am really excited to read it! :)

Rebels Like Us by Liz Reinhardt [4 stars]: I honestly didn't expect to like this one based on the synopsis, but it was very readable and the MC was very witty and sassy. I don't think this one was on my TBR, so I must add it ASAP :)

Definitions of Indefinable Things by Whitney Taylor [5 stars]: It was such a short excerpt and I blew through it. Reggie was hilarious and I love reading her POV so far. Seriously brilliant for such a short piece of the book - I cannot wait to read the entire thing!

Gem and Dixie by Sara Zarr [3.5 stars]: Not sure what to think of this. I think I would like to read more, but I'm still unsure of what I just read, if that makes sense.

Great previews of upcoming books. This is like a fine buffet of a variety of books all in one place for avid readers to enjoy! I like the variety as well because there are books here I probably would not have learned about on my own. Look forward to reading the next one! Keep them coming. Thanks.
