It seems like a very interesting, but it never seemed to hold my interest long enough. I will try again one day.

Reggie had been meeting the man for three nights. He said she was the key part to his cause but he would not tell his name when she asked or give her any answers. Tonight he told her he was there to help her with changes she will be going through and to help her understand her place. Then he brought up how she felt when she brought the frog back to life with her touch. An old man is telling Asher that he is demanding payment in full. That he had taken Asher out of the house for his own, educated him, saved him from the Pits that are for traitor’s children. Without the old man Asher would be wasting away in a mine waiting to die. The man Asher calls Master agrees that if Asher can complete the task he and his family will be free and a place would be made for them in society. The old man or master was Andrius Drake, Master of the Mages Council and head of the Military of Two Cities wasn’t known for his mercy. Asher was given a locket with a picture of a young woman in it about the same age as Asher. Adrius wants Asher to find her, observe her and when the time is right, bring her through the barriers to him. Arlene was Reggie’s mother and an alcoholic and sinking more into her alcoholism. John was Reggie’s friend and she wanted to show him that she could bring a dead beetle back to life something she could all of a sudden do like when she brought the frog back. John asked why she hadn’t said anything before. Reggie said she was scared and didn’t understand what was happening to her. Reggie loved learning but the people at school didn’t like that she was different. Reggie laid down after school and found herself again talking to the man. He told her that she straddled two worlds and the other world was showing it’s face. Then he asked if she remembered anything of her father. The man told her that her father wasn’t from her world and wasn’t suppose to come over to hers but he had always been too curious and very powerful. Her father’s name was Sebastian. The man was Rhys and was her guardian. He is to offer her guidance and protection, to teach her. Sebastian and Rhys had been best friends Only in the sleep realm Rhys felt secure enough to speak to her as Rhys was afraid he’d be caught. Reggie wanted to know why anyone would want to hurt her and Rhys said her powers that were finally coming into being. One could sense magic if they knew what to look for. He told Reggie she had inherited her father’s magic , his ability to draw power from the earth. Then Rhys told Reggie she was in danger and needed to come to him. There are some doorways between the worlds. Then he said someone seeking her and he was very dangerous. Rhys said he would send an agent for her and kill her like they did her father, that Reggie was the last of her kind- Aether Mages- who have control of the four elements. Being an Aether Mage was now illegal and they had been hunted and killed because their magic was too strong. but there was still Reggie.
I liked this story but had mixed feelings for it. . It had a good plot. It had a lot to it: magic, danger, adventure, other realms, excitement, Aether Mages, chases, magical battles, evil villains and so much more. I did feel Reggie’s relationship with Asher to quick. At some points especially in the beginning this dragged but then for the rest of the story becomes faster maybe a little too fast for me to completely enjoy the story. Also Reggie trusted way to easy especially after Rhys told her she was in danger. The thing that puts this down to a three is the ending was a cliffhanger and I hate when an author does that to a story I am reading completely throws the story off for me. I seldom use the word hate but in this case it fits.

This was an interesting read, for sure! While I really fell in love with the plot and the world building, the characters seemed just a tad bit unrealistic with the choices they made. I will definitely keep reading the series however, and I hope the characters can evolve and measure up to the fantastic writing and spellbinding plot!

My favorite animal is a frog, so when the main character brought a frog back to life in biology class I hopped up and down. I tried not to let my love for frogs bias me in this review, but luckily I liked the book overall. I am a huge PR reader and this hit the spot. I would definitely recommend this book to those who are looking for a strong, female heroine who can take care of herself. While this is one of those books where the character is just learning her newfound powers, the world building was almost easier that way. The reader learned as the heroine learned. Good stuff. 5 flippers up!

The Other Inheritance is what I’d consider a pretty standard modern-day take on fantasy; it combines a lot of elements the average fantasy reader knows, but manages to create a world that isn’t completely understood... I would have really liked to have seen more expositional world building to get a better idea of things. It was kinda confusing and hard for me to get into (plot-wise)

I was drawn to this book by the cover art and the description. The book itself fell really flat and I ended up DNF (did not finish) it about 33% of the way in.

The Other Inheritance is the exciting first book of the young adult urban fantasy series, The Inheritance. Fast-paced, with great characters and an absorbing plot, this novel by Rebecca Jaycox is sure to keep you turning the pages.

This was a well written story with interesting characters and plot, however not the kind of story for the younger readers in the YR genre as it contains explicit sex.

I received this book from Netgalley as an early release review copy.

I really enjoyed the book, the writer has a great style and way with words. I wasn't expecting to enjoy this book that much but was pleasantly surprised!

The only drawback for me was that my copy I downloaded seemed to be missing passages where the text would just cut off - this was very irritating but despite that, I still enjoyed the story.

This book reminded me of several other series I've read so I'm afraid it doesn't get bonus points for originality, I also found some of the plot points a bit predictable.

However this is a good read if you're a bit book hungover and looking for something to help! Interesting story, interesting characters and world, will definitely read the next instalment :)

Character development could've been a little better but overall this was a great read. We meet Reggie the same way we meet Dorothy from the wizard of oz, living this kind of normal life, as normal as can be and then bam! we're thrust into this world of magic and dreamscapes. I definitely recommend this book.

Finally a character I can love who is female and has no need for men in her life in order to survive. One of the strongest characters out there, a great world to explore. I absolutely loved this book!

I really enjoyed this book and I'm awaiting book 2 with eagerness.

The beginning of the book was a bit weird for me, almost as if the book started in the middle of the beginning. Reggie had already been visited by Rhys multiple times and has brought a dead frog back to life in the middle of science class, However I quickly got past my confusion and immediately begun to like Reggie and sympathize with her life. Her mother Arlene is a Alcoholic and so Reggie is in charge of caring for her and her mother. Plus she is constantly bullied at school and only has one friend, John.

We find out that Reggie is a Aether Mage, a powerful magician that has control of the four elements. Being a Aether Mage is illegal and they are being hunted and killed because of their powerful magic, and Reggie is on that list. Reggie meets Asher who agrees to help take her to Rhys in The Other. The place were Reggie actually belongs.

They fall in love and I can say I don't mind that. I really like Asher and he and Reggie seen to be great together. Although Reggie does need to learn how to control her powers, as her emotions cause her magic to flare.

There are a couple of things that make it so this book does not get all five stars. First of all Arlene, she just seems incapable of doing anything right, I hope in the second book to the series she redeems herself because right now she's killing it.

It looks like there might be a love triangle with John, Reggie and Asher. It's not mentioned in this book, but it's kinda hinted at and I really hope that it does not happen.

Also Reggie had the perfect chance to kill the villain and she wasted it. Saying she does not like killing, However she has no trouble killing others. It's a bit inconsistent on feelings on this matter.

I did enjoy this book and I will try to read the second one when it comes out.

THE OTHER INHERITANCE delves into the YA world of fantasy and sci fi with a plot that brings you into the story quickly. One problem I had was that the pacing felt way too fast. I needed time to get to know the characters and what was going on before the action took over.

I didn't hate this book but didn't love it either. As a main character, 17-year-old Reggie is ok - she's tough as well as vulnerable, yet doesn't speak or think like someone her age, which I'll explain in a minute. She was also too trusting of strangers and was okay almost immediately when she found out there's another realm called "the Other." That would take some time for me to digest, personally.

I'm no prude. Sexuality and cussing in YA books don't bother me, but in this case they did. Reggie cusses every other sentence, and she can be completely crass. I cringed when she called another girl's breasts "tits" in order to insult her. Granted the girl was a bully; however, I just don't see a young teenage girl saying that to someone to insult them. I also know teenagers cuss, but every other sentence?

Also for a girl who recently lost her virginity, Reggie sure is comfortable talking about it openly, and sometimes sex is mentioned by other characters in a crude manner. I found it unbelievable and unnecessary. Reggie only just met the guy.

The action scenes were well written, and I liked the world building. While I wasn't connected to Reggie, I ended up being connected to one of the characters she meets in the Other.

The ending of THE OTHER INHERITANCE was abrupt even for being the first book in a series. I was shocked when it ended and felt like it almost ended in the middle of a sentence. I am planning on reading the next novel to see if the loose ends from this novel will be tied up and to find out what happens next.

The cover and description of this book are very intriguing. Unfortunately, the disappointment started setting in for me right from the first page.

We're meeting our heroine and her mysterious "biker guy" right in medias res of the action, which deprives us from the pleasure of not only witnessing Reggie's powers awakening, but also the first time she is meeting Rhys. It's a shame, because readers would connect better to Reggie and the plot if the story unfolded more organically.

Things are not made any better by the very rapid info dumps that are delivered several chapters later. Reggie is pretty much informed in bulk about how special she is, who her father was, what The Other is, and why she's in danger. Once again, we are told, not shown; and I missed out on the pleasure of the journey of finding out.

I found characterization a problem as well. There is a lot of back and forth dialogue saturated with information about plot and setting, but very little of it reflects how the characters feel. The descriptive passages in between the dialogue don't offer much insight into the characters' inner life either. They're scared, they're surprised, they're mad - a lot - but I don't know if I ever found out who they ARE. Both Reggie and John accept the new reality almost instantaneously, without real examination. I find it unbelievable. Reactions to this kind of the "other" should be more incredulous, acceptance gradual.

The mystery of the book suffers as well. Character intentions are laid out. There's no subtlety. We can't be kept guessing about characters' choices because they're telegraphed for us. Asher would be so much more interesting if we couldn't foresee his choices. But we know from the moment we meet him of his morality and hatred for his master. Wouldn't it be so much more interesting to discover that about him? Twists are telegraphed ahead of time as well, like Asher being mistaken for the guy Rhys sent. I would like to be surprised about this mistaken identity.

In the end this book contains a promise of a great story spoiled by poor execution. It's a shame.

The idea of the story is promising, however I abandoned the book at 60% because it was just too much work. The characters and storyline need more padding, there's just not enough to get a full flavour of anything that's going on. Reggie comes across as very sweet, but incredibly stupid. We're told she agonises over her mother's condition, yet she leaves her alone; goes off with Asher, assuming he's been sent by Rhys, even though Rhys warned her Andrius would be sending someone; when she finds out Asher 'works' for Andrius....
I constantly felt like I was scrabbling in the fog, to the point where I was actively 'not enjoying' the book.
I shan't be posting any reviews on it.

I really enjoyed this book. Meeting all the characters was probably the most enjoyable, seeing what species and power they have.
The description of the Other was well done, I could imagine it in my minds eye. Any fantasy lover should enjoy this.

Although the blurb was interesting, the author lost me right from the second page, I felt like the book started in the middle or that I missed the first book in the series. There was hardly any world building or back story in any of the following chapters and the relationship seemed rushed so nothing connected with me as a reader its not a bad story just not a good one.

WARNING: From what I can gather, YA books are meant to be read by 12 to 18 year olds. Online booksellers have listed this under children’s books. I would not want my young child, tweens or young teens reading this. Perhaps authors should take the age group they are marketing a book for into consideration before adding all this sexual content. The book would have been better without it because so much of it seems to be centered around actual sex between the characters and clichéd sexual comments such as: he must get some; the wolf must like me (this was said while Reggie was with a naked character), and “I’m nineteen and you’re beautiful. You’re lucky you can walk (after a night together). This was so very unnecessary. A pet peeve of mine is that for some unknowable reasons, grown-ups muck up something a child would enjoy with sex. Why? The grown-ups aren’t going to miss these poorly written scenes, and we (most of us) try to shelter our young from things like that.

Other thoughts : The main character, Reggie, was more than a little abrasive. She had no self control whatsoever getting into fights over the slightest provocation. She would say whatever she was thinking often to her detriment, and she wasn’t shy about letting loose with the lewd comments herself. I will give the author credit that she had Reggie start to see that she had a problem with anger issues and try to deal with them.

This could have been an excellent story with an imaginative plot. In the beginning, I was intrigued enough to keep reading. But by the halfway point, I became quite irritated with the direction the book was taking. I am giving it two stars because the plot was original.

This is a good read with plenty of action and great characters.
The story finishes with you wanting more.
I will definitely be reading the next in the series.
