I really enjoyed this book about Sophie and Cole. They both had a hard life growing up. This book is about the 1st part of their lives together. It was an emotional and exciting book. I did not want to stop reading once I started. This was my 1st book by Loretta Lost and will not be my last. I was given a copy from Xpresso Book Tours through NetGalley and was not compensated in any way for this review, nor asked to give a positive review.

Thank you to Netgalley, the Publisher and the author for the opportunity to read this book in return for my honest opinion.

This book sounded so good and started off so good. I was really into the story, I thought our main character, Sophie was interesting and I loved the backstory as we tried to figure out what happened to Cole. I was really enjoying the storyline and getting into the book when all of a sudden, it took an odd turn and then was over. I really did not like the way this book just ended after what was supposed to be a shocking revelation, I guess. It felt like the author just ran out of ideas and wanted to end it. I will not be reading the follow-up book. I am disappointed as I felt it was really good until about 2/3 of the way in.

Sophie Shields is actually a CIA Agent. She can do things with a computer that most people have never heard of. Few people know what she really does.

Sophie was abandoned as a baby and grew up in the system ... neglected and abused. Until she met Cole Hunter, she was totally alone in this world. Cole became her friend, her brother, her protector and partner in crime.

Cole served time in prison for killing a man. This man was foster father to both Sophie and Cole. He was abusive and he wasn't above sneaking into Sophie's room at night. This man also liked to create pain ... with the end of a smoking cigarette. One night when he attacked Sophie, Cole jumped into the fray and accidentally killed him. Even though it was in defense of Sophie, he spent some time behind bars.

Finding out that her current boyfriend of sorts was not giving her the letters from Cole for quite awhile because of his jealousy .. and then finding out that Cole had been murdered...sets Sophie off. She will go to the ends of earth to find out who and why.

But then ... is he really dead? If not, where is he?

This is a low-grade mystery, mostly written to introduce these characters and explain their backgrounds. This was an okay read for me ... not terribly exciting. There are 2 more books following this one and hopefully, there is more substance to be found.

The ending was a cliffhanger to introduce the next book, The Bulletproof Boy, I'm assuming is about Cole.

I wish to thank the author / Loretta Lost / and Netgalley for the digital copy of this book. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

I should have read the blurb before reading it. I went into it purely based on cover and title, thinking it was paranormal story and was a bit disappointed. About half was into it, when nothing paranormal pop up, I went to Goodreads page to read what it is about.

That being said, it is actually really interesting story, timeline jumps from youth to present, between two lead characters. And just when you think you know what is going on, something even friekier happens. The book is extremely gripping from the get go, you just have to know what happens on the next page. It is also very fast read, but I have to say, it is not for the faint hearted. There is a lot ob abuse, molestation, emotion instability and even hint of split personalities. I would make a amazing movie.

Book reminded me a bit on the Girl with the dragon tattoo. It has the same vibe. So if you like that series, you will certainly love this one.

The Fireproof Girl is the story of Sophie Shield (and other aliases) and Cole Hunter. Both are broken children who grow up to be broken adults. In the beginning you know that Sophie has a problem with commitment and you slowly find out why. I felt the author did a pretty good job of weaving the backstory for both Sophie/Scarlett and Cole. There were a lot of times, however, that I felt like she was throwing information at the reader that could have been presented in a more discreet manner, allowing the reader to figure things out rather than just be told everything.

She did a pretty good job of making interesting characters and I felt that the story was interesting with great potential. There were a lot of times where events and actions of the characters threw me off. Zack's character seemed like a bit of a pushover. All the lies he discovered Sophie told him and he never flinched, even played along with most of them. There was a part where it talked about Scarlett splitting almost into someone else, which seemed like it would have been incredibly relevant to the story but wasn't really mentioned again at any point. Spohie's "employer" was a little challenging to believe as well. It was a great mechanic but did not really get used except for when it was convenient.

I felt like there was a lot of things left wide open and some of the technical aspects of the writing could have been more smooth. It is, however, the first in a series, so I'm hopeful that many of the answers I would want will be in the next book. I was quite let down by the ending but can let that go since there is a sequel to this one. I would still recommend the book. It was an intriguing story with some pretty good characters. I look forward to reading the second book.

Loretta Lost is a new author for me, liked so much immediately bought the next in the series to continue reading about the characters. Intriguing storyline captures interest and keeps readers hooked. Serena/Scarlett/Sophie is a smart but troubled young woman devastated by the sudden murder of her "foster brother." She vows to help find those responsible, with the blessings of the Agency she works for. Their troubles during their youth seems to be the reason for Cole's death as she works to find the motive for his murder. The Foreproof Girl is only the first book to feature Cole and Scarett.

This is definitely my favorite book of 2017! Okay, so we’re only a week into the new year, and this is pretty much the first book that I’ve read. But still!

There were many things about this book that I actually did not like. It jumps back and forth between characters and time periods. At least it does so on varying chapters, and each one tells you at the beginning which character and the point in time you are now visiting. That little trick does help clarify things quite a bit. But I just tend to find this narrative device confusing in general.

Another thing is how the story begins. It is pretty much sad and depressing from the get-go. And it only gets worse as things move along. Even going back to prior periods in the lives of the main characters doesn’t improve things at all; instead, they are just get more and more hellish.

Having myself been a shelter parent for a while many years ago, I know that much of the instances of abuse described are all too real-to-life, both by biological and/or foster parents. But it doesn’t make reading about those situations, even fabricated ones, any easier. It is no wonder that the two main characters, Sophie and Cole, both had so many issues and problems to overcome.

At least they do finally, at least to some degree, each individually seem to find a measure of happiness and fulfillment. But then disaster strikes again. In fact, as the novel opens, we learn of Cole’s murder. It is only in regards to this incident that the rest of the story comes to light. Even at the end of this narrative, there are many things, about both the past and the present, that are left unexplained.

It’s a very good thing that there is a sequel (“The Bulletproof Boy”) because I really want to find out what becomes of these characters! I am hopefully that they might have some sort of happily-ever-after, but it sure looks like things are stacked against them. This is definitely a very compelling read that makes me want more!
