Duncton Wood! An amazing and wondrous anthropomorphic fantasy! Although first published over twenty years ago I found it as powerful today as it was then.
An allegorical tale of a community in crisis where a maddened dictatorlike autocrat treats the moles as pawns and redistributes them or kills them in his play for godlike, unquestioned power. When I first read this I saw it as Watership Down taken to a whole new and more adult level. Filled with dark undertones slashed into awareness by moments of brilliant light and life, bringing hope and atonement.
I found the return to Duncton Wood as harrowing and marvellous as when I first read it, confirming to my mind that William Horwood is a talented, insightful and amazing writer.
