Midnight at the Bright Ideas Bookstore is not like any other book I've read. It's a mystery, but certainly not in the traditional sense. It's a little disturbing and starts out slowly, but the pace picks up and soon I couldn't put it down. The ending was a complete surprise. The characters in this book are fascinating and well developed and the writing is excellent. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and highly recommend it.
Without spoilers.....the book tells the story of Lydia Smith (not her real last name), who works in a bookstore inhabited not only by customers but by a daily cast of BookFrogs who spend their days in the store reading. One of them, named Joey, kills himself and leaves Lydia his possessions. Those random books and more lead Lydia on a journey back to her childhood and an unsolved murder she tried hard to leave behind. Suddenly all the stories and people from what she considers her "old" life are intruding into her present day, and she and those around her are all affected by the implications.
