No one can dispute that Beattie is the master of the modern short story. I've been a Beattie follower through her entire career. Her style is beyond brilliant, and the common thread of travel and being a guest that weaves these stories together is admirable. However. Beattie has experimented much in the last few years. I long for the succinct story of her earlier writings. But she is one i can't seem to stay away from. I enjoyed most of this collection despite its being a departure from her earlier works.
