It seems I've been on a short story trek these last few weeks and this collection is a winner. All written by author Ann Beattie, it is an eclectic collection with a theme of guests visiting or having guests invited to visit you. Ann Beattie always incorporates humor and the unexpected in her writing and these are all delightful to read. The stories vary in length from very short to longer with more detail. A perfect gift for the reader on your list. Enjoy this one.

No one can dispute that Beattie is the master of the modern short story. I've been a Beattie follower through her entire career. Her style is beyond brilliant, and the common thread of travel and being a guest that weaves these stories together is admirable. However. Beattie has experimented much in the last few years. I long for the succinct story of her earlier writings. But she is one i can't seem to stay away from. I enjoyed most of this collection despite its being a departure from her earlier works.
