When I began to read, I was very quickly drawn in to this wonderful story. told in both the present day and in retrosprect by the old grandmother of her experiences during the war in crete, also of her daughter, and how they affected her life, and her granddaughter, who wants to bring them altogether again. Sad and uplifting in equal measure, the story unfolds, telling of how lies, secrets, misunderstandings and vendetta have broken lives and how these events have affected the characters lives until the present day.
After reading this, I would very like to visit Crete, and the wonderful people who faced such hardship in the war, It seems that this story is based on real events.,this book is a truly enjoyable read, and I highly recommend it.

Always curious about her family’s past, Angie, about to marry, decides to visit Crete, where her mother grew up. Her mother has always been strangely secretive about her past and when Angie finds her grandmother, Marta, she discovers why. Marta is dying and needs to unburden herself about what happened during the Second World War when the Nazis occupied the island. A woman might do anything to protect her children. This is a beautiful, heartbreaking story of sacrifice and love in the face of evil
