Cute early chapter book with some adorable illustrations. I'd get a copy of this for my sons when they're older for sure.

A Cheerful, Upbeat, Friendship Story

Ben is a klutz. Princess Moonglow is his best pal and thinks he's swell just the way he is, but Ben wants to pull himself together and maybe even someday deserve to become a Castle knight. SPOILER. The story follows Ben and Moonglow when they are left alone in charge of the Castle. A dastardly rival King shows up with evil intentions, but Ben unwittingly foils his plans through a comedy of misadventures and mishaps.

The story makes sense and would be easy enough for an early chapter book reader to follow. Ben's bumbling has a certain good-natured charm and is funny without being mean or dumb. Ben is such a well intentioned and stout hearted hero that you root for him even as you giggle.

But to me, what really elevates this book is the strong friendship between Ben and Moonglow. They support each other, look out for each other, and respect each other.

The tone of the book is consistently fun, upbeat and on point. Lots of times in books like this you have a mishap or mess up or adult reaction that feels out of place or awkward or just odd. Not here; there is never a false step and the story just zips along to its happy ending. It's not fart based or gross, (although Ben does mistakenly season the royal feast soup with a laxative), but there is a lot of mud, getting dirty, falling in water, and spilling things. This struck me as a cheerful, fun and entertaining find for a young reader.
