Juliet’s mother felt Scotsmen were greedy and stingy and not to be trusted . But for the good of God and country she will let Juliet go. King George had given orders that Juliet come to Scotland and married the Laird’s son Ross. The Scots and English had a tentative relationship and the marriage would help bond the countries, hopefully preventing war. Juliet was the daughter of the Duke of Manchester. Castle Glenhaven is where Juliet would now call home. Juliet loved Lord John Alder but left him on England . Nothing could fill that void so Juliet felt at the time. John was the son of the Duke of Essex. John had fought, begged her father, and offered money to no avail. No one could contest the King’s order. Juliet would only have her maid with her which in private Juliet said was her best friend. Then Juliet was introduced to Ross and he was the most beautiful man Juliet had ever seen. Ross could not take his eyes off the beautiful woman that was to be his bride in two days. Ross took Juliet for a walk after their first dinner together and asked if he could kiss her and Juliet agreed. Juliet had never been kissed like that before and not in a bad way. The next morning Ross was as attentive to Juliet as he could be. The next day Ross and Juliet would be married and Ross looked forward to it. As Juliet and Ross spend time together as husband and wife their feelings develop. Ross leaves for a Jacobite causes and his father pushes Juliet to leave with John. But John isn’t the same man Juliet knew in England He is determined to make Juliet his. It doesn’t matter to him Juliet is married to Ross now and has feelings for her husband. John Threatens to blackmail the MacLarens saying they were Jacobite supporters and traitors. Juliet would do whatever she had to as long as it protected the family she had grown to love.I really enjoyed this story. It had a good plot. This kept my attention all the way through the book. I loved how sweet and gentle Ross was with Juliet before and after they were married. I loved Juliet and Ross as a couple. I also loved how Ross was with his sister Glynes. But I didn’t feel the end was really finished and didn't really care for that. I did enjoy the action and twists. I loved the characters and the ins and outs of this story and I recommend.

1715 Scotland

Times were insecure with whispers of another Jacobite rising and war coming soon. The English King felt the only way to secure alliances was through marriages and bloodlines. In other words wealthy English heiresses marrying Scottish Laird’s or their first born son. The next to be Laird. Now the English daughter of the Duke of Norchester, Lady Juliet Anna Marie Kingston, already had a love in England. Whom she said, goodbye to, as she understood her duties. She also wondered: why she was the only nobleman's daughter being chosen to marry a Scottish Lairds son?

It wasn't easy her trip to Glenhaven in Scotland. As she heard the whispers and shouts to leave! Go back to England Sassenach! Except when she met her betrothed it was love at first site for the Lairds son, Ross MacLaren and Juliet! Both were attracted to each other physically and mentally right from the get go!

Juliet eventually wins the entire MacLaren familie’s, respect and love, but Ross’s parents Donnach and his wife Fiona. His Laird father ends up using Juliet which breaks her heart, but agrees to save the MacLaren Family!

Well this did not play out the way you think, as Juliet’s former beau comes into play. Being a wealthy Duke's son he buys a commission and has the Kings ear. This can put the MacLaren Clan in extreme danger!

The Laird MacLaren is not thrilled having a Sassenach daughter-in-law, but feels he can use her and send her back if needed. The German English King wants to avoid a Jacobite uprising! Rumors of war, as the old pretender Scottish King might be back on Scottish soil. This time to lead his Scottish Warriors for a Jacobite rising!

Juliet's former beau threatens to blackmail The MacLarens. Stating they are Jacobite supporters and traitors! When Laird Donnach asks John what he wants? The answer was easy - Juliet, or all the men in his clan would be killed or imprisoned as traitors! Wasn't really much of a choice, but it was the reason the Laird agreed to the marriage in the first place.

This novel is super sad at times as Juliet has to even leave her maid and best friend Eva. As she falls in love with one of Ross’s brothers. John is determined to get Juliet back or put all the MacLaren’s in danger!

This story is spectacular it has all the elements historical romance readers love. It is filled with arranged marriages, death, dying, heartbreak, betrayal, illness, remorse, abduction, true factual history, treachery, mystery, suspense, passsion and true love! It is a fast paced phenomenal read that readers will love. Readers will fall in love with three year old Alec, Ross’s nephew and other secondary characters. For example like his sisters Heather, Greer, and Glynis. Juliet’s former maid Ava and Ross’s brother Duncan too. I look forward to the next book in this spectacular MacLaren series! I can't wait as this author definitely has a gift with Scottish historical romance! I hope she sticks with my favorite genre, as she writes beautifully.

This is a first read by this author Nancy Pennick for me. I absolutely loved this book, it is super fabulous! It has true history and a beautiful fictional romance! Yet there is sadness and sorrow throughout the novel too. So have those tissues handy lassies! Of course there is true love and happiness too and how Juliet and Ross achieve it!

Breathtaking settings, with dialogues that is total perfection. The plots within plots, makes the reader wonder what will happen next-with anticipation! A total nail biter for sure!

This was an okay read for me. The story has a good premise and is entertaining however if you like a romance with a little steam this isn’t it. It does have plenty of suspense and drama, I just like a bit more chemistry between my hero and heroine.

As an avid Scottish historical romance reviewer, I’ve had the privilege of reading/reviewing hundreds of books in this genre. Nothing thrills me more than to come across a “new to me” author who sets the pages on fire with passion, intrigue, and drama. I sincerely hope others enjoy Ms. Pennick’s writing style in My Highland husband, but, unfortunately, it did not work for me. The overall package presented consisted of a racy, steamy cover and intriguing book synopsis, but I did not feel that’s what was actually delivered. The writing felt so sing songy, soft-spoken, and mechanical at times I felt as if everyone was either tip toeing through the castle or playfully skipping around it. From what I could tell, there were no steamy scenes, as well. Ross, the hero, and even John, the anti-hero, both came across more childish than mature/alpha male at times.

So, really, there is no point to go on further with this review. Again, I wish the author all the best. I think there is a good chance other readers new to this genre who prefer a clean romance may find it appealing. Mainly because there are explanations built in explaining how clans have to honor their king, band together, etc. This NetGalley reviewer just can’t recommend it because the writing itself was not engaging.

'My Highlander Husband' by Nancy Pennick is the story of Lady Juliet and Ross.
Juliet is a English women that has been sent to marry Ross who is a Highlander. The marriage is to
calm threats of a Jacobite uprising. But Juliet is in love with a English man named John. Her heart is broken but she goes to meet Ross as instructed. But when she sees Ross she is shocked that she finds him attractive and enjoys his company. Ross too did not want to marry and English women but his father has ordered him to do so. So Ross too is caught off guard by his immediate feelings for Juliet. This was a sweet and clean read that was really enjoyable.

I really enjoyed reading this book. Especially the main characters were very likeable but also the minor characters were well developed and interesting. Okay, I can't say that I like John or Ross' father Donnach as they are simply not likeable but Glynis, Eva and all the others are wonderful. Oh, but don't ask me about Juliet's parents, they are jsut...well...I won't start because I won't be able to stop ranting...

With the book set at the time of the Jacobite rising of 1715 our hero and our heroine are caught in the middle of the fight between the Scors and the English. Juliet is the English bride of a Highlander at a time where the Highlands felt the repercussions after having lost the fight at the Battle of Preston and the Battle of Sherrifmuir. Compared to the repercussions of Culloden later on, it was still a rather gentle approach but people had to flee the country nontheless.
With John, her former suitor, not willing to give up on her, Juliet becomes part of the powerplay between the English and the Scots. Will Ross be able to win her back?

I really loved that Ross and Juliet don't hold back. They are open to the possibility of love and accknowledge it when it comes their way despite the rather unfortunate circumstances of their marriage. Even when things get complicated they care for each other and fight for what they want - or to protect those they love.
All in all I can definitely recommend this book, I really enjoyed it and will look for other books by Nancy Pennick.
