Despite this sampler being available to view and request on NetGalley, it isn't possible to download it so unfortunately I couldn't read it.

I am not able to provide feedback for this fiction sampler as I was not able to access the book. I'm not sure why it let me get it, when it says the publisher hasn't released it yet. Very confusing.

I’m so addicted to these I’ve even been hunting down the old ones to see if there’s any interesting books I’ve missed!

unable to download. Such a shame as I loved the sound of some of the books even though it was from Spring 2017.

I was looking forward to reading this book of samples. Unfortunately, this book of fiction samples could not be downloaded. This should probably be removed from the selections of available books from Netgalley.

I couldn’t download this file because it’s from 2017. I enjoy reading these samplers to get a taste of the new books.

Thank you NetGalley and Penguin Random House for this sampler. I actually wasn't able to download the file but since the Sampler is from 2017, everything is out and I read the samples available on Amazon.

It's a little eerie, here in the middle of COVID-19, to see 2 of these books be about deadly plagues. With AMERICAN WAR going into a second Civil War, and climate change sinking Florida, that all feels a little too real right now. But THE SPACE BETWEEN THE STARS is so very different, with the emphasis on isolation (the virus conveniently leaving nothing but dust of its victims behind) that I might be able to read this.

Most of these books had intriguing concepts but just weren't things I was specifically interested in reading. For example, reading the excerpt of STAY WITH ME I got the feeling this would make more sense if I were a parent or had attempted to become one. And while the idea of LOLA, a cartel boss hiding in plain sight as a girlfriend, is interesting, watching BREAKING BAD helped me realize that this subject matter is way too much for me.

Thank you again for the chance to read a few excerpts. This time around I'm only putting THE SPACE BETWEEN THE STARS on my TBR, but I'm always glad of the chance to give new things a try.

I would have loved to give feedback on this sampler but the publisher has restricted downloading access.

Even though these are old titles I thought it would be nice to get a look at the sampler collection to see what I might want to read. Unfortunately while it let me choose this title it then displayed the following message:

Downloading and/or reviewing is currently not possible for this title. This could mean the publisher has not yet provided the final content, or the content has been removed.

If it can't be downloaded then it should not be able to be selected as a read now.

The blurb had me at "dystopian worlds", how can I resist a Penguin sampler that included dystopian fiction?! I won't turn my nose down at the fiction either!

Didn't mean to request. Old Sampler. Thought that is was for the Spring of 2020, and wasn't thinking.I just want this off my shelf because I'm super OCD like that.

I believe these samplers would be wonderful to offer to book clubs--gives debut authors exposure to readers and opens up possible title choices to dedicated reader. I also appreciated the opportunity to preview quality fiction.

This is the first time I get a sample like this and it was seriously cool.. this is an awesome way to have quick references for reviews once I read the actual book. Will keep my eye out for more!

I always try to get these. They are a nice collection of samples of books to look forward to. Lots of titles stood out.
Many thanks to Netgalley and publisher

Fiction samplers are always a fantastic way of getting a teaser and finding new titles to enjoy. I have always loved them and read them whenever possible. I especially look forward to debut fiction samplers since I don’t know the authors and may not come across them otherwise. This one was no exception. As with any other collection, you love some and some not so much.

Stay with Me by Ayobami Adebayo

I loved the sample so much, I ended up purchasing a hard copy of the book. It was my favorite one of the samples and one of my favorite books of 2017 and the type of complex literary fiction I am most drawn forward to. I love international fiction, especially from cultures I know little about and I always look forward to learning more while being immersed in a place I know nothing about.

The Space Between the Stars by Anne Corlett

Based on the sample, I didn’t think that book would be for me and I did not mark it to be of interest.

Dead Letters by Catie Dolan-Leach

I would never have given this book a second look based on the cover alone. Never! I still don’t like it at all as I think it targets the wrong audience. With that said, after reading the sample, I could not wait to read the entire book. I was pleasantly surprised by the literary quality of the book vs. the plot centered novel I was expecting. I would most likey read the author again.

American War by Omar El Akkad

Another one I purchased for my library. I had already seen the book listed on several lists of anticipated fiction, so was looking forward to it before downloading the collection. Excellent read that I have been sharing with friends and recommending.

Gilded Cage by Vic James

I liked this sample for what it was, but did not go on to read the book. It looks like it’s still on my TBR on Goodreads, so I might try to get it from the library.

Lola by Melissa Scrivner Love

I read the sample and went online to preorder the book. I loved that gritty, well written novel and the insight into south LA gang life it afforded. Found the descriptions to be very vivid and the characters well developed, particularly Lola. A well-deserved spot on the Edgars nominations list and I can’t wait to read the author’s second book, American Heroin.

The Shark Club by Ann Kidd Taylor

Did not read. Not my type of book.

Ten Dead Comedians by Fred Van Lente

Did not read. The sample didn’t hold my interest.

Loved this sampler, which will help me make some of my next fiction selections. What a great chance to “test run” an array of titles before making a purchase. Like having the tastiest hors d’oevres!

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for access to the SPRING 2017 DEBUT FICTION SAMPLER.
