The Story of Arthur Truluv is a moving story of the unique bond between three people dealing with loss and loneliness. Berg always writes stories that feel real - genuine emotions and complex people. Having just lost someone very close to me, this book hit close to home. Ultimately uplifting and touching, I recommend this novel as well as Berg's other books for readers looking for genuine emotions. As with most of Berg's books, this book isn't one to read if you are looking for action but more if you want to feel connections between people.

Oh, Arthur! How can you not love him after reading this? What a truly touch story of love and loss and life and love - two different sorts of love, of course. And of how different people can come together from the most unlikeliest of circumstances and make a perfectly lovely nontraditional family <3 After it finished, I couldn't help but wish the very best for Maddy - I do realize this was Arthur's story, but a part of me wants to know how her whole life turns out!

A beautiful, life-affirming novel about a remarkably loving man who creates for himself and others second chances at happiness.

Berg has done it again! Such a heartwarming tale of disconnected folk who connect and form a family. Berg's strength is that she completely and wonderfully captures human emotions and feelings while telling a beautiful story laden with, but not weighted down by, an enjoyable narrative. I can't put this book down!

“What is it that makes a family? Certainly no document does, no legal pronouncement or accident of birth. No, real families come from choices we make about who we want to be bound to, and the ties to such families live in our hearts” - The Story of Arthur Truluv

I received an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is a gem of a book and a joy to read. The central theme is the sadness of being lonely, the search for fulfillment, and the importance of family – the kind you’re born into and the kind you choose. The story revolves around three main characters: Arthur, an elderly, romantic widower, keeps his deceased wife alive in his heart by visiting her grave every day; Maddy, a sad, lonely, neglected teenager, who clings to the idea of her deceased mother, wants to be seen and loved; and Arthur’s next door neighbor, Lucille, an elderly, headstrong, meddling woman who missed out on true love and yearns to feel needed. These three characters form a unique bond that affects their life’s path and ignores the generational gap. They all find a way to fill each other’s missing pieces, bringing joy to their newfound family, and themselves. It is a sweet and hopeful story that shows one can find their purpose and joy at any point in life, where you least expect it. It also reiterates that family and love is who and what you make of it. Secondary characters and side stories only serve to show how broken our heroes are. Elizabeth Berg writes with enough heart and emotion to avoid a sappy story and deliver one that ends with a smile on your face. Definitely a feel-good read.

Who would have thought that an elderly man and a teenager would have so much in common? The Story of Arthur Truluv by Elizabeth Berg is a sweet, sad, and adorable novel about how our differences can bring us together. Arthur goes to the cemetery every day to have lunch with his late wife, and while there he meets Maddy, a teenager who hides out in the gravestones to get away from her problems at school. As the two get to know each other, they find common ground that pulls them out of their isolation.

Maddy is being bullied at school, so every day she finds solace in the peacefulness of the grave yard. Arthur misses his wife dearly, and can't seem to go a day with out stopping by to say hello to her. Add in Arthur's neighbor who may be a little too nosey for her own good, and there is a recipe for a very strange, but adorable, friendship between all three people.

Although this book was a little bit sappy, I found it to be so much fun to read. It pulled me in from the very moment I learned about Arthur, he's just a sweetheart. It makes me miss my grandfather, who I haven't had around since I was 8 years old. There is just something about stories involving old men that makes me feel so cozy and warm. He wasn't the typical crotchety old man either, he cared for Maddy, and she found comfort in him as well.

This is just a very sweet story about unlikely friends, coping with loss, and finding happiness after tragedy. I give this book 4 out of 5 stars, I received it from Netgalley. Beautifully written, and the characters pop off the pages.

The Story of Arthur Truluv reminded me a bit of Lillian Boxfish Takes A Walk! It is a sad story, but the underlying message is uplifting. Arthur's character is wonderfully fleshed out. Even though this is not my usual cup of tea, I'd recommend this to readers who love a moving story.

4.0 - a little bit like A Man Called Ove or the Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper; enjoyable and heartlifting for a summer afternoon read

This book was refreshing for its positive message in an age that often focuses on darkness. A pleasant and uplifting read - fable like.

I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in return for my unbiased opinion.

Arthur Moses lives a mostly solitary life. Every day, he rides the bus to the graveyard to eat lunch with his wife, Nola. Besides that, his only human interaction often comes by chatting on the front porch of his neighbor Lucille, who also lives alone and loves baking. One day, he decides to wave at the teenager he often sees at the graveyard; after that, he and Maddy develop a friendship that pulls them both out of their solitude. Together, Arthur, Lucille, and Maddy form a sort of family.

This was a sweet story about the importance of human connections. It was also funny at times, making me laugh out loud. I enjoyed Arthur's “quirk” of stopping at various headstones and getting visions of how that person had been in life. I would recommend this book if you are looking for a book that will make you feel good in a sentimental way.

This was a charming story, I appreciated the diverse ages of the characters and how the women grew. Arthur will remind many of a Backman character or two, but that's ok. I think this would make a great book club read, I would have loved to discuss it with someone after I read it.

I'd never read a book by Elizabeth Berg before, but I'm glad I did. This is a story about three people from different backgrounds and who are different ages, but have all experienced loss. I felt that this was a quick read and liked how the story came together.

I would like to thank Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with a review copy in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion of it.
