Joyce Carol Oates’ new collection brings together six excellent short tales of suspense and terror that deal with the dark side of human nature.
A stunning collection across a range of dark fiction subgenres, Oates draws the reader into each story through rich, unique characters and a page-turning narrative style that draws the tension early and doesn’t let go until the final paragraph.
While all six tales are well worthy of praise, it’s her darkest stories that are the real standouts in this collection.
They include the title story The Doll-Master, a chilling first-person account of a man who collects living dolls as the result of a childhood trauma, and Big Momma, another horror story about a lonely girl whose decision to befriend a strange family leads to dire consequences.
An excellent story collection that's well worth your time.
