More of a historical/academic look at sketching, this book might seem a bit dry for anyone who’s looking for sketching tips.

This book is more history of than how to. I was interested in it, but it wasn't what I thought it would be. I think if you are an intermediate artist, or someone with a lot of experience, you might view this differently, but if you are an amateur it isn't going to help you get much practise in.

Whilst I can appreciate the research hours put into this and the way it is written, I didn't find that it would add much in the way of practical guidance for a new art student. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't what I thought it would be. Give it a try and see what you think.

My kids and I truly enjoyed the sketching guidebook. Excellent illustrations and instructions.

After a general introduction to the art of sketching, the volume treats various medias and sujects. Being a reprint of a book published in 1930, the content and style are rather outdated, the black and white illustrations do not help.

This book is for students of art and sketching, or serious artists. It is more of theory than practice book on sketching. I was hoping that it would be more of how-to guide for newbies. The language and history are geared towards those that have had previous knowledge of art theory.

I enjoy sketching as a way to ease my stress and thought I might find some helpful hints. When I opened this book, I found Jasper Salway's drawings were beyond my style. The book shows many aspects to the importance of sketching which then leads into watercolor or painting in oils. A more experience artist or student of art may find the book helpful but as an amateur I was disappointed.

If you are looking for a how to book about sketching, this is not the book for you. If you are looking for a book that will show you sketches throughout history, this is right in your wheelhouse! So many beautiful sketches by so many talented artists. Unfortunately, I was unable to read the text, due to the type of print used. It looked like gibberish on the ereader screen. I hope others had more luck than I did!

This book is written as a sketch artist companion and is a guide of instruction manuals. This gave you details advantages of many drawing media, from pencil to watercolour, and their application to depictions of interior studies, figures, and landscapes.

I’ve enjoyed drawing etc. for last 30 years. However, I did not find this book inspiring as other books you can purchase on the market. I found this book drab and very old fashioned throughout.

The Dover publication is a reprint of a book first published in 1930. About Sketching features archaic writing with a European flair. The highlight of the book is the numerous pictures used to illustrate the subject discussed.

I enjoyed the detail in the illustrations but could not read the book properly in digital format. some of the pages were unreadable. This made it too difficult to settle into. Parts were interesting though

Unfortunately, this is a reprint from a book originally published in 1930, with little or no updates. Shame it couldn't wait until its centenary. I was really looking forward to reading this book and was wholly disappointed. It is clearly stated that it was a reprint from a 1930s book, and/or it was updated as second edition, then it would have made a better impression, but I otherwise feel it was mis-represented.

I liked this book, when the pages are clear to read, it does show that the authors know what they were talking about, and are passionate about this topic. About Sketching features sketch as another way to express art, instead of just a basic drawing technique.
I did wish that the drawings were in color, and more suited to ebook.

Informative, covers different media and methods of sketching with appropriate visuals.

Cannot access this pdf in my reader. Sorry about that, had I known I would not have requested this book.
