Lord of chance is thoughtfu but fun story of two people who have had it rough, in one or another, thru most of their lives. They felt they had no value as a person. Charlotte is the daughter of a courtesan and Anthony can not pass up a wager of any kind.. They are accidentally married. The authors characters came to life and aided in keeping your interest engaged.. The plot weaves around the problems they face and how they feel about the people they face day to day. I highly recommend this book and I enjoyed it very much.. Erica Ridley can always be counted on for an excellent read.

Fleeing London to find her father, Charlotte Devon daughter of a courtesan meets in the Scottish borders, reckless gambler, and vastly in debt, Anthony Fairfax.
Thrown together by mistake can they help each other to a solution of their problems.
A fun and quick read with some charming characters.

This was a sweet, endearing, fun and light-hearted read about two people betting everything on love.
When Charlotte "wins" Anthony in a card game, then ends up accidentally married to him, hijinks and humor ensue! I like really enjoyed the pace at which this romance developed. I loved Anthony's respect for Charlotte and his resolve to do right by her regardless of what happens to himself. My heart broke for Charlotte who merely wanted her father's love and a chance to lead a respectable life out of the shadow of her mother's disreputable occupation.
The plot was intriguing, suspenseful and multi-layered, and the characters were well-written and very likable.
As usual, Ridley did not disappoint.
*I received a complimentary ARC of this book from NetGalley & Season Publishing/WebMotion in order to read and provide a voluntary, unbiased and honest review, should I choose to do so.

A clever twist on a thoroughly covered topic. Ridley allows both hero and heroine to do the saving in a difficult situation. An interesting and exciting read!

Tender and true--in the end!
Not quite a rags to riches story, in fact almost the opposite. When two young people in a Scottish border town discover the distinct disadvantage to having a lack of knowledge about the local laws and customs, their lives change unequivocally.
Inveterate gambler Anthony Fairfax is trying to gain enough money to pay his vowels to a London gambling house. A gentlemanly sense of duty to a damsel in distress and the looming certainty of danger to his person has him falsely declaring their marital state within the hearing of others.
A young woman, Charlotte Devon, daughter of an infamous London courtesan is seeking her lordly unknown father. Desperation has called for desperate measures.
As these two discover each other (well thrown together by chance and mischance really) and each realizes their own self worth, a charming love story unfolds.
Love reforms this gallant rogue and holds him to a steady path. Two people with telling backgrounds find the secret to overcoming their pasts.
A NetGalley ARC
(April 2017)

This is an engaging, romantic story. Charlotte is a naive, vulnerable, insecure but determined young woman. Anthony is a very charming, amusing, romantic and captivating man. Finding themselves accidentally married in Scotland is highly entertaining. The drama and romance that follows makes for a touching storyline. This is a must add to your TBR list.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Netgalley. This is my honest opinion of it.

' Lord of Chance by Erica Ridley is book One in the "Rogues to Riches" series. This is the story of Charlotte Devon and Anthony Fairfax.
Anthony is the brother to Sarah Fairfax who was the main female character in "The Brigadier's Runaway Bride" which was book Five "The Dukes of War" series. But you don't have to have read that book to enjoy this one. I just wanted to point the connection out in case you have read that one and would like to read Anthony's story.
Anthony is in debit with the possibility of prison. But Anthony is still Gambling and trying to raise money that way to pay his debits when he meets Charlotte. Charlotte to is seeking something but she is trying to find her father. Charlotte has build up a fantasy of sorts about her father and whats to find him. Charlotte meets Anthony at a card table where they played several hands of cards. When Anthony first sees Charlotte she is sitting in view of the card table. There he starts to think she is his 'lady luck' as he keeps wining his hands. But after a few men leave she moves to play and wins all his hands and what money he won. With one last bet Anthony loose to her he must walk her back to her room. Along the way he had to claim to be her husband and then they find there is a problem with her room. This sets in motion for them to join forces to try and help each other meet their goals to get Anthony out of Debit and Charlotte to find her father.

I'm so excited by the first book in the new series! It has a great book cover and a great story inside. Some men can learn a thing or two about becoming men they could be. I enjoyed this fairytale. I hope to find the next book as enjoyable as this one. The characters were real and likeable.

What happens when two people voice aloud their marriage state in Scotland not realising that it is perfectly legal and binding?
That is the predicament Anthony Fairfax, gambler trying to gain the funds to pay off his debts and Charlotte Devon, the daughter of a courtesan in search of her Lordly unknown father, find themselves in.
I love the interaction between the characters and their journey of acceptance of who they actually are as to who they think they are.
This is a brilliant start to a new series, Rogues to Riches, hot on the heels of the Dukes of War series.
I voluntarily received an advanced readers copy from Netgalley and my views are my own.

Lord of Chance is the first book in a new series called Rogues to Riches by Erica Ridley. This is a refreshing, beautiful story about two damaged people who mistakenly end up together but who ultimately fall in love and repair one another.
Charlotte Devon grew up as the bastard daughter of a well known courtesan in London. She dreams about finding her high born father and making a better life for herself. She’s in Scotland looking for her father who is a laird when by chance she meets Anthony Fairfax. Anthony Fairfax lives for gambling and is always looking for the next wager he can make. However, his gambling debts have finally caught up to him and he faces the inevitable debtors prison. Things are starting to looking up for Anthony until he loses all his money in a single card game to Charlotte Devon. He tries to win the money back but ultimately ends up as Charlotte’s servant for the night. When a drunk oversteps his bounds with Charlotte, Anthony does the gentlemanly thing and claims to be Charlotte’s husband, to which she readily agrees in front of several witnesses. However, they aren’t in England and their innocent lie in Scotland legally binds them together as husband and wife. This one little mistake turns their lives upside-down but it ends up be the very thing that saves them both.
I really enjoyed this heartwarming Cinderella story. Charlotte grew up an outcast because of who her mother is and believes the only happiness she will find in life is if she somehow rises above her station. Anthony grew up a slave to gambling. Although he has friends and family he’s never quite sure if people like him or if they only want him around for his money. Charlotte and Anthony get to know each other for who they truly are on the inside. They’re both able to look past the way other people see them. Charlotte doesn’t see Anthony the gambler. She sees the always optimistic man, who will do whatever it takes make the wrong things right without burdening others. Anthony doesn’t see Charlotte as the bastard daughter of a courtesan but he sees a strong, intelligent woman. She’s resilient and level-headed and truly wants to help other people.
The story moved at a steady pace and I was immediately drawn in after the first chapter. I found myself laughing out loud at times and cringing at others. You can really feel the range of emotions that our hero and heroine go through. They are both strong characters that only make each other stronger as the story progresses. There is instant chemistry between Charlotte and Anthony and delightful tension is expertly woven through the story. They both struggle with understandable demons but they help each other to heal and find happiness together. Another entertaining, well-written story by Erica Ridley that I highly recommend. I can’t wait to read Lord Wainwright’s story in the next installment of the Rogues to Riches series, Lord of Pleasure!

As always, this is an honest review in return for this ARC. Erica Ridley always writes such great tales. Who would have thought two down and out people could find each other and love and a happy life together? Very nice story without too much eroticism for those who are a bit opposed to that sort of thing.

The first of the new Rogues to Riches series by Erica Ridley is a fun read. Charlotte Devon, the socially exiled daughter of a famous courtesan and a duke, meets Anthony Fairfax, an impoverished rake. Together they find their way to make a living for themselves and their families.

The story was entertaining enough, but underdeveloped. The main characters are appealing and easy to cheer on to happily ever after. It just seems that many details and subplots are glossed over in favor of a tidy conclusion.

Even though Lord of Chance was a Regency Romance. Erica Ridley tackled a serious issue. That of gambling addiction. Anthony Fairfax, supported his family by his luck at the tables. But it seems his luck has turned when his, supposed to be best friend bought up his debt and now Anthony only was a couple of weeks to come up with two thousand pounds or face going to debtor’s prison. His luck seems to change again when he spotted lady luck across the room. Everything seems to go his way until again that fickle lady had opted to abandon him again. Or did she?
Charlotte Devon had her own problems, the only person she has to rely on is her mother, because of who she was, Charlotte didn't have any friends growing up. To correct how her life was going, Charlotte is on a mission to find her long-lost father, and hopefully, his name would open doors. But like Anthony, everything wasn’t going her way. She couldn’t locate her father no matter how hard she tried and without even trying to, she gains a husband.
Lord of Chance was a good read from beginning to end. When it came to character development you didn’t have to ask yourself did these characters grow and how? Erica Ridley basically answered all the questions for you, leaving you to enjoy a nice Cinderella story.

This is the authors' first book in the Rogues to riches series. The dialogues are hilarious and well written. The banter between Anthony and Charlotte made me laugh out loud at times. This was a really fun romance with well written intricate characters, making it a really enjoyable read.
* I received this ARC from NetGalley and the publisher for an honest review*

Anthony Fairfax and Charlotte Devon do not realize when he escorts her to her chambers in the inn that by trying to help her save her reputation and stating they are husband and wife, they have just married themselves in Scotland. Erica Ridley strings together what you would truly expect to happen to two people who do not quite understand the circumstances in which they find themselves – married!
Neither understood what they had done or how to get out of it. They truly are total strangers who are now married. You begin to see through their actions these two both have good hearts and are truly kind and, although gamblers, are very honest. Both had thought they would be able to change their stations in life, marry someone whom they could care about, even love deeply. But, each has their secrets which they begin to share with each other as they find themselves wed.
Charlotte and Anthony meet at a gambling table. He thinks she is his muse causing his amazing winning streak until she wins the card game leaving him with nothing. He challenges her and ends up losing again. He, then, is indebted to her for whatever she wants, thus, the escort to her bedchamber.
Charlotte is, actually, the daughter of a famous courtesan who has traveled to Scotland looking for her father.
Anthony lives off his gambling winnings. She is looking for her father wearing the earrings and necklace given to her mother hoping someone will recognize them giving her an idea of how to find her father. He is close to being placed in jail for his gambling debts.
The romance of Charlotte and Anthony is charming as they spend time together without consummating their unexpected marriage. He openly decides to stay away from gambling and try to earn funds by hard word and labor. Charlotte unexpectedly earns money by giving advice. Then, the unexpected happens.
Lord of Chance is another great Erica Ridley book that is thoroughly enjoyable, light-hearted and entertaining for a weekend read. Great start to another Ridley series.

Charlotte Devon is in Scotland searching for her father and running from the stigma of being a courtesan’s illegitimate daughter. Anthony Fairfax is running from his creditors and the possibility of debtor’s prison. Both of them seek acceptance and love. When he escorts her to her room at the end of the day, they stay in the corridor just long enough for someone to question their being together. In an attempt to avoid scandal, they claim to be married. What neither of them knows is that in Scotland, if you say it in front of others, you are indeed man and wife. They travel back to London hoping to find solutions to their problems, so they can have a happy marriage.
Lord of Chance is an enjoyable story. The plot is well written and realistic, and holds the reader’s attention from beginning to end. The main characters are absolutely loveable. Charlotte and Anthony are a perfect fit. He is cheerful and optimistic and she is ever practical. They will work hard for what they want. In the end, they may be surprised where true luck and fortune can be found. This is a great beginning to a new series that promises to be every bit as good as Erica’s Dukes of War.

Light and lively, funny and interesting. Definitely a goodread!
Its a buy buy buy book . Now having put that lets go to the rest. While I did not find it to be totally historical in the writing, I did find it to be interesting, engaging and totally witty! I enjoyed the characters, the plot line and the authors way of writing such a great well rounded story. It holds the attention and the pace is very steady through out the book. So definitely a buy book! I was given this book in return for an honest review. Anna

Lord of Chance was an interesting read, very straight forward, a little bit of suspense but it ends in a way that you would imagine. It's a nice easy read!

Anthony Fairfax and Charlotte Devon find themselves married in Scotland, after Anthony loses his winnings to Charlotte, in a game of chance. Charlotte, the illegitimate daughter of a courtesan, is searching for her father and hopes that her likeness to her mother and the jewels that she carries, will alert him to her presence. Anthony (brother to Sarah from The Brigadier's Runaway Bride), is trying to avoid debtor’s prison, by gambling, only to find that his new wife’s jewels may be sold off to pay for his debts. Together, they try to raise the money for Anthony whilst trying to find Charlotte’s father.
Both characters were so refreshingly honest and sincere in their feelings for each other, that is was so easy to be swept away by their romance. A great read!
I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
