Some cute, short narratives about the ways that various relationships ended (badly). The stories are accompanied by brief, one-panel comics - sometimes very relevant and amusing, other times not so much. A good coffee-table sort of book for anyone who's recently been through a heartbreak and needs a laugh.

It was a nice quick and fun read. I really enjoyed this short story collection and it was interesting to see how weird people get when they break up and all the different ways they did it in.

From the description: "Anonymous break up stories from men and women, old and young, serious and silly and the cartoons that inspired them. Author and artist Hilary Campbell turns the painful into the hilarious, validating emotions from forgotten middle school tragedies to relationships that ended only hours ago."

Cambell truly did collect a myriad of stories that offer a great variety of horrible breakups...many of which make you go "Wow, at least I haven't been dumped that way." The cutesy illustrations to go with them are perfectly fitting as well. BREAKING UP IS HARD TO DO is a kitschy little book that serves its purpose perfectly. It's a brief distraction and a reminder that it so could have been worse.

The moment I saw what this book was about I was very interested in it. It reminded me of the stories I would read in Seventeen magazines. They had a lot of stories of people embrassing themselves and then bad dates people went on. So I knew this was something I had to check out just to see how it was.

I have to say it's a decent book. I mean the whole book is about people and their break-up stories. Some of them are really ridiculous and some just plain mean. Some were sad to read.

I do have to say I didn't really enjoy the drawing in this book. I felt I could have done without them.

Overall I enjoyed the book but it's something I would read the one time and then push aside. There were some good stories in here but this isn't something I feel I need to buy.

Laugh out loud stories of heartbreak (or relief!). Really good fun - easy to read and very entertaining.

I expected interesting stories and great art. I did not find that in this book, which was very meh to boring. I did like the font that was chosen and other stylistic aspects of the book. I did not like the slut shaming which was almost inevitable in a book like this.

A funny compilation of ridiculous and disturbing breakups! I enjoyed it.

This book is a collection of breakup stories that vary from sad to truly outrageous, coupled with some casual illustrations to really hammer the issue home.

"He threw a Gameboy at my head" ~ my favourite line

I can't really think of a single situation in which reading this book would be comforting, not even in a 'at least you weren't broken up with like this' capacity but it was a really interesting read all the same - we all love the sordid details so we can wince at some of the shittiest breakups. The one thing we can take from this book, however, is DON'T BREAK UP WITH PEOPLE LIKE THIS OR YOU WILL END UP IN A BOOK.

There is solidarity to be found in reading the stories of other people's break-ups. It's the feeling that you are not wrong in thinking that there are many terrible people in the world. You're absolutely right in your assumptions as Campbell explains in the preface. This is just a story highlighting the actions of those terrible people.

I giggled my way through this light hearted read. A great quick pick up & put down book of the confessions of breaking up and being dumped.

This is the kind of book that will make some people feel better about breaking up. I think it's trying to be amusing, but it isn't. This doesn't go much beyond lists of short breakup stories you can find online. Some of the cartoons are cute, but they don't add much to it overall.

Sooo funny. There are so many relatable stories!! Even though I am single and anyone have never broken up with me like that, I found it really interesting.
I absolutely loved this book, it is amazing and unique. I found this book very special, and I think that I will definitely re-read this one when someone will break up with me just to laugh after crying. And the illustrations were amazing, too! So accurate.
I recommend this book to everyoneee!!

I gather that this book was supposed to be at least mildly entertaining, and I usually love zany breakup stories, but this was just cringe-y and awful. A few stories offered up some fat-shaming and slut-shaming, and I don't think a single story brought so much as a smile to my face. I also didn't love the formatting or her bits of artwork. All in all, I feel like these stories would be more suited for a text-post-only tumblr blog or something.

3 stars. I loved the premise of the book and its design, but I felt it could have been better. The cartoons were adorable but the stories were just okay. Not as funny as I'd hoped but did get a few giggles out of me.

I really enjoyed reading Breaking up is hard to do, it was absolutely hilarious and the cute drawings make it.

The topic of the book is relatable as almost everyone has went through a horribly timedd or awkward break up at some point in their life. The book makes breaking up a less serious topic and gives the reader the ability to laugh at the past and think of their own break ups with humor.

I would recommend this book for anyone going through a break up or simply needing a laugh.

If you are looking for something refreshing, and need a break from whatever you might be doing I highly recommend you to pick up this book. It took me 1 hour  and a half  to finish it, and it lightened up my whole day and made me laugh out-loud.

The stories that Hilary included and the art she made highlighted the comical side of the break up and I love them for how awesome they are.

I was drawn to this book after having read Daniel Handler’s Why We Broke Up a little while back, and thought ‘hey, why not?’ This collection of anonymous stories made me giggle and guffaw more than a few times, as it took on the form of those ridiculous whisper confessions, and the illustrations that accompanied each story were just as cute.

My main complaint with this title is that while it is listed under comics and graphic novels, or as sequential art, the illustrations are neither sequential nor do they form a graphic novel. When I first selected the title I was expecting the stories to be completely translated into comic form (which would have been hilarious) rather than being accompanied by a single vignette. Don’t get me wrong, the stories were funny and the artwork spot on – but I would have preferred something that strayed a bit further away from single pane/ editorial comics. Was if fun? Sure! But there was way more that could have been done with these stories for them to be marketed as genuine comics and the collection as a graphic novel.

Would I recommend this book? Of course! It’s funny, relatable, and the perfect little book to leave places where it can be picked up and put down in a short amount of time. Campbell’s comic interpretation really adds to the experience, and reminded me more than a little of Bizzaro and Off the Mark. And, to be quite honest, it could easily be compared to the Bro Code bathroom readers in terms of humour and application.

I found this very funny, and the illustrations were a nice touch. Ideal fun book to give someone for a break up, it cheered me up and made me glad I wasn't on the dating scene anymore!
