On the Chase started off with a BANG, and I expect nothing less from Katie Ruggle! The beginning of this book was only a preview for how action packed and intense the rest of the book was going to be. This book had so much action, intrigue, and mystery to keep me on the edge of my seat!

The main female character, Grace, was a witty and strong woman. I admired how much she cared about those around her and how she never wanted anyone to get hurt. She did get a bit whiny at times, which annoyed me, but I really liked her overall. Hugh was a snarky and charming man. He was a little too nosy at times, and honestly a little creepy, but I understood that he had good intentions...even it was strange. One of my favorite things about Hugh though was his sense of humor. He always had a funny remark and I loved his carefree attitude.

The romance between Grace and Hugh was steamy and so freaking funny. The banter between Grace and Hugh genuinely made me laugh out loud! The author did a great job at building the chemistry between them. They had some instant chemistry, but I loved that they tried ignoring it by taking jabs at each other.

Overall, this novel was full of suspense and sexy times! I would recommend this to anyone who loves romances fill with nail biting action!

I really really want to like this book as I loved Hugh in Run to Ground. The opening pages are quite promising; what had the heroine run for her life. Although regrettably - as the story goes - I don't really like Grace's character. Even taking into account the shock and ordeal she's been through, her POV sounds too whiny and flippant, which is not so sympathetic. Added to that her constant giggling just grated on my nerve.

Now, I'm not saying no to a bit of humor. After all, Hugh has been the source of amusement since the first installment of the series. But it's just the trying-so-hard-to-be droll on Hugh part in this book that give the impression he's being the clown cop who just have to be funny. Every. Single. Time. Not too mention his stalking of the town's newcomer (Yes, Hugh. Whatever protest you sprouts, what you do is stalking. Cop's instinct or - even worse - sexual attraction or whatever).

As glad as I am that Hugh find someone to love and cuddle-up with, their courtship is way too rushed and unconvincing. Say, being the joint target from some evil group speed-up the bonding. But I just don't buy their sudden attachment to each other.

Oh, there's plenty of actions happening in this book, with fast-paced sequence that had Hugh and Grace understandably paranoid with their surrounding. But the sense of danger feels circumstantial and coincidental. Also, after the opening and the number of attempts on our MCs, it's just eye-rolling how the supposedly big bad villains are folding in one by one just like that. So easily.

The power for On the Chase is on the supporting characters; Lexi for sure. Her presence made reading about the heroine giggling and whining more bearable. The children from previous books - Jules' siblings - are fun to read, too. And then there's Hugh's other (human) teammates. Theo is still okay here and I'm hoping Otto's story will be more acceptable than this (and finger-crossed Hugh would tone-down his clownish antics).

This was pretty entertaining. I really enjoy books that have good banter between the main couple. It's more of the frustration, flirty banter if that makes sense. It had me laughing a lot.

In book one, Jules needed to save her siblings from her evil stepmom. She kidnaps them and has a "guy" create a whole new identity for them all and moves them to a new location where she falls in love with Theo, a cop. Theo and his partner, Hugh know Jules is hiding something, but Theo is so in love with her, he decides to not look into her past. At the end of book 1, Jules gets a phone call from the "guy" to let her know he's sending a woman to her who needs a new start.

In this second book, we get Grace, aka Kaylee's story. She has found out the guy she's dating is related to a very evil man and she has to run fast and far away for her safety. This brings her to Colorado living with Jules and her 4 younger siblings.

Theo and Hugh take one look at Grace and know she is hiding something as well, only this time Theo wants to know what it is in fear of her bringing danger to Jules and the kids. When Hugh suggest looking into her, Theo agrees.

This is where it got very entertaining. Hugh practically stalks Grace and interrogates her but he tries to do it subtly. It wasn't so subtle and Graces reactions were comical. When someone shoots at Hugh and Grace, she fears her past has found her and confides to Hugh and Theo about her past, but they soon learn it's Hugh who is in danger.

There is a lot going on in this book, between Jules and Theo's continued story, Hugh and Grace's story and the danger that seem to be stalking them around every corner. Instead of overwhelming the reader, it made for a pretty fast pace with enough romance and laughable moments to keep me entertained. I liked book one, but I liked this one even more. I'm looking forward to book 3! ARC provided by NetGalley.

Laugh out loud funny, "On the Chase" is arguably Katie Ruggle's best romantic thriller to date! Don't worry, her signature fast-paced plot continues to raise your pulse. But, expect to laugh aloud a lot also.

Ruggle demonstrated her wicked sense of humor in "Gone Too Deep," but in "On the Chase" she has gone full throttle to the point that I had to stop reading at times to wipe tears from my eyes. The exchanges between Hugh and Kaylee a.k.a. Grace are so hilarious I just cannot stop giggling.

Still, this is romantic suspense, so there are so many plot twists and hair-raising scenes. Gripping - that's the adjective that sums it all up.

Mixing comedy and drama for this thriller, Katie Ruggle showed mastery of her craft. She kept her light touch all throughout. As she brought her readers from scene to scene, Ruggle kept a tight storyline. She never lost a thread and tied them all up at the end while opening a new one for the next book.

A must-read! If you are going to read only one book this fall, then "On the Chase" should be it. The book is Rated M for Mature due to violence and sexual content.

I really enjoyed On the Chase the second in the Rocky Mountain K9 Unit Series. The author has a way of making the most irritating traits endearing. In the first book the hero is a total grump. In this book our hero always has something to say; a quip, a joke, a pithy remark. The only time he is serious is when he is working. But you can’t help but love his upbeat attitude and he truly is a hero. I loved that the author gave Hugh and Grace time to fall for each other. Okay being shot and beat up is usually enough to get a guy to keep it in his pants but I think if Grace had been up for it Hugh would have made it happen. I fell for these characters head over heels and think you will too.

This was my first Katie Ruggle book. I enjoyed it. The suspense was good, and you got some romance in the end.

4.75 Hearts Holy Crap! Boy this story never stopped. Kaylee/Grace goes through so much that I am not sure how the author could even think of so much. What in the world will be in the next book because this has every adventure you can think of. And yet I just know the next one will be great too.

Kaylee/Grace is a great character. I mean if all this stuff was happening to me I think I would do exactly as she does. She is not overly courageous or she’s not a damsel in distress (even though she really is). She is strong but at the same time scared out of her mind. She is just so real.

Hugh is just a nut job. He is quick witted and down to earth. I can imagine if he was real he would have been the class clown in school. But when he needs to he can be strong and protective of both Kaylee/Grace and Lexi, his K9 partner.

I would have liked a bit more of Lexi. She is a good dog and officer but I would have enjoyed her having a bit of sense of humor as well to match Hugh’s.

This is the second in the series but can be read as a stand alone.

Katie Ruggle hits another home run with the second book in her Rocky Mountain K9 Unit series. On the Chase features Kaylee Ramey (Grace) and K9 cop, Hugh Murdoch. Kaylee is running for her life after witnessing the torture of three men in a basement. Her boyfriend’s uncle is now out to eliminate the witness to his crime. Kaylee disappears from her glamorous life in LA and reappears in the snowy mountain town of Monroe, Colorado. Stripped of everything she held dear, Grace is terrified of being found and killed. Hugh is intrigued by this lovely woman who appears out of nowhere. He is also highly suspicious of her “story.” A K9 detective on leave to recover from an injury, Hugh has plenty of time to investigate the lovely newcomer.

Shortly after Grace arrives, Hugh begins to have a very deadly run of bad luck. He gets shot, his truck is blow to smithereens, and Grace and his dog are almost killed in a collapsing deck event. Are these incidents related to Grace and her problems? Is someone after Hugh? Can the couple overcome the lies between them and find love? Read On the Chase to find the answers to these questions.

I am addicted to Katie Ruggle’s alpha male characters and their devotion to those for whom they care. For an afternoon of intrigue and a little romance, pick up a copy of this book!

I fell in serious like with Hugh Murdoch in Run to Ground, the first novel in the Rocky Mountain K9 Unit series. Hugh was the seriously needed comic relief from a rather brooding hero, Theo, so I was totally jazzed to read his story. His love interest Kaylee, see’s a crime that she may not survive witnessing. Using a familiar mysterious benefactor, she ends up the new roommate to Jules and her siblings in Hugh’s hometown. After Jules’ brush with danger the K9 unit that both Theo and Hugh belong are immediately suspicious of Kaylee, now renamed Grace. She and Hugh butt heads while he tries to figure out her story. Then as with all of Katie Ruggles books, hi-jinks ensue.

I was thrilled with Grace and Hugh’s chemistry, energy and witty repartee, something I thought Run to Ground had lacked. Hugh, the king of one liners was always good for a quick smile, but now we get to see the man behind the mask and I really liked what I saw. Hugh hides his emotions by cracking those jokes, yet that mask drops when his new lady looks to be in danger. Grace had what Jules lacked, a spine. Although to cut Jules a little slack, Grace is only looking out for herself and didn’t have to worry about any younger siblings. Grace has sass, and even though seriously scared about what she ran from, she never lacked a quick comeback and managed to keep her head on straight.

The two of them together were a fun read, and the energetic plot helped move those pages along. I was worried after Run to Ground’s lackluster start but I think Ms. Ruggle has found her romantic suspense legs again.

I received a copy of this book through NetGalley for my honest review and it was honest.

On the Chase is the second book in Katie Ruggle's Rocky Mountain K9 Unit series. I haven't read the previous instalment, Run to Ground, but I didn't have any difficulty making sense of things here. The story does reference people and events from the first book, but overall, I'd say this one can be read as a standalone.

Kaylee is super excited to be dating Noah who seems like the guy of her dreams. He's smart, sexy, and successful, and he's ready to introduce her to the uncle who has been like a father to him all his life. Said uncle lives in a Los Angeles mansion so big that Kaylee gets lost while she's searching for a bathroom. Loath to admit what she considers a stupid mistake, Kaylee begins to randomly open door after door, hoping to find the bathroom on her own. Instead, she stumbles upon three men tied up in a basement. It's immediately obvious the men have been tortured, and Kaylee is understandably terrified. Even so, she manages to set the men free before fleeing for her life.

Noah's uncle Martin is a powerful man with wide-reaching influence. After a couple of attempts on her life, Kaylee realizes she can't stay in Los Angeles. Her best friend runs a shelter for battered women, and she gives Kaylee the name of a man who can help her disappear.

Several days later, Kaylee has moved to a small Colorado town under the name Grace Robinson. Everything about her life has changed, and Grace isn't sure she's a fan. She's sharing a rundown house with five strangers and she spends her days cleaning dog kennels, but still, Grace is determined to remain optimistic. After all, her new life promises safety and that's nothing to sneeze at.

Police detective Hugh Murdock is counting down the days until he can return to active duty. Several weeks before our story begins, Hugh was shot in the line of duty and sustained a nasty leg injury which has kept him from working. He and his K-9 partner, Lexi, are going stir crazy, so Hugh begins showing up at random investigations, hoping for even the smallest opportunity to get back to work.

It just so happens that Grace is living with the girlfriend of a fellow K-9 officer, and meets Hugh when he visits his co-worker… and let's just say the meeting doesn't go well. Grace is very nervous about being in the presence of police officers, since she knows the man who is after her has several cops on his payroll. Hugh detects her nervousness and vows there and then to discover all of Grace's secrets. As one might imagine, this serves only to increase her fear, and a sort of vicious circle ensues.

It doesn't take very long for both Grace and Hugh to admit they're attracted to one another. I was initially pretty puzzled by this, but decided to just go with it for a while, and fortunately, the author was soon able to make me believe in the chemistry between them, making an actual romance a little easier to swallow. They don't admit their feelings right away, and I was pleased with Ms. Ruggle's decision to allow them to get to know each other before any grand proclamations are made.

Depending on your perspective, Grace and Hugh are either the world's luckiest or unluckiest people. During the course of about a week, their lives are threatened six or seven times. Of course, they always manage to save themselves, and I found myself a little frustrated by the constant failure on the part of the villain. Since Hugh is a cop, I pretty much expected him to know how to take care of himself, but I struggled to buy into the fact that Grace, a woman who spent most of her time behind a desk before going on the run, was able to fight off her attackers each and every time they came for her. I'm not a fan of the ‘damsel in distress’ trope, but I also want the strengths of my heroines to be believable - and Grace's simply aren't.

I did end up really enjoying the relationship between the couple. Hugh is something of a joker, which serves as an excellent foil for Grace's serious nature. I loved watching Grace lay her fears to rest and realize Hugh was one of the good guys. Once she starts to trust him, I was completely sold on them as a couple.

If you're someone who doesn't take romantic suspense novels too seriously, you're likely to enjoy On the Chase. It's pretty implausible at times, but still ended up being a lot of fun to read. This certainly wasn't one of the best books I've read in a while, but it's also far from being one of the worst.

On The Chase by Katie Ruggle is the 2nd book in her Rocky Mountain K9 Trilogy. I enjoyed the first book in this trilogy, and was pleasantly surprised that On The Chase was even better. Kaylee, our heroine, is on the run after attending a dinner with her boyfriend. When she steps away to find the ladies room, she hears calls for help and steps into a situation she was not meant to see. With her boyfriend’s Uncle trying to kill her, she runs to the Colorado mountains to hide with our previous book heroine.

Hugh Murdoch, whom we met in book 1, is a cop and friend of Theo (last book hero). Hugh was suspicious of Theo’s Julie, and now that he meets Grace, he is determined to find out what she is hiding. Hugh, who was on leave from work due to an injury, followed Grace everywhere; trying to learn what she is hiding, and to act on his attraction to her. Hugh also has someone trying to kill him, to stop him from a drug bust.
Grace and Hugh are in the middle of a few attacks, which Grace thinks is meant for her, but Hugh insists it is the drug lord. When Hugh gets hurt, Grace will quickly tell Hugh and Theo the truth about who is trying to find her. They both know how powerful this man is, and are determined to help Grace.

As Hugh protects Grace, their romance will become sizzling. I was actually surprised that I did like Hugh and Grace together, though he was annoying early on. I also liked how Julie would help Grace, knowing what it is like to be on the run. Lexi was Hugh’s K-9 dog, and I enjoyed Lexi’s scenes, as well as seeing Viggy again.
The story was very suspenseful from the start, with a lot of action all the way through. The last ¼ of the book had me holding my breath, as Grace’s life was on the line twice and no one knew where she was. Grace did turn out to be a fantastic heroine, who managed to fight her way to survival.

On the Chase is another suspenseful story in this trilogy, and I look forward to reading the final book. Katie Ruggle has written a great story, wonderful couple, and exciting action packed throughout. I suggest you start with the first book, Run to Ground.

Kaylee has a date with a guy she hopes is her prince charming, finally! She is nervous to be meeting his uncle on the first date, but he seems to want to make her feel comfortable. While there she gets lost on the way to the rest room and sees something she shouldn't. Her friend helps her to disappear when she finds out how dangerous Noah's family is. She finds herself hiding out in a small town in Colorado with Jules (from the previous book) and her siblings. While getting used to her new life she has a hard time not looking over her shoulder. Jules 'boyfriend is a search and rescue cop and his best friend Hugh is suspicious of "Grace". He is on leave due to an injury and as too much time on his hands. When his life is threatened, Grace is sure Noah's Uncle has found her, and eventually tells Hugh, Jules and Theo why she is hiding out. There is a lot of humor, action and near misses as they get to know each other. Grace/Kaylee fights the attraction a bit as she hopes to return to her life in California, but can't resist Hugh's charm. I liked this second installment better than the first and look forward to the next story.

I received an advanced copy of this book. This book was very witty, charming and had just the right touch of romantic suspense. Hugh had quite the sense of humor and at first I thought Grace wouldn't join in the banter but she did and it made the book that much more enjoyable. Through thick and thin, bullets flying and crime these two characters stuck together and the romance was building. I can't wait to see if the author shares Otto's story.

On the Chase by Katie Ruggle
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I felt that I was missing some key elements in the story as I had not read book one. The story here has two different events driving the plot. Kaylee has to run for her life taking a new identity. Hugh and his K-9 partner, Lexi, are on leave after Hugh has been shot in the leg. The two events drive the story. Both Hugh and Gracie (Kaylee's new name) are in danger. Finding a solution to Gracies' problem and finding the man trying to kill Hugh kept the tension level very high. I liked the setting, Colorado Mountains, the plot, danger, danger, danger, and the characters. Hugh was really fun and Gracie (Kaylee) was his match. Lexi with her cold nose added some fun moments to the story line. A interesting series. I plan to go back and read book one to get the backstory I missed.

I received a free copy of the book in return for an honest review.

Woah, Hugh and Gracie sure have a lot of people who want them dead! I loved this wild and crazy ride and didn't want to get off. Hugh and Grace are off the charts hot and the bad guys they face are seriously scary.

There's pretty much no way to talk about this without spoilers because there was always something happening, always someone trying to kill them and they got inventive! I mean, really interesting ways to try and kill people here inventive. And Theo , Jules, and the crew get involved too.

Hugh is simply awesome and I loved him. Grace grew on me quickly so that was a huge plus. And now I want the LT to get a book too because that man just made my heart bleed. I'm totally ready for Otto's book now.

A solid four and a half
I really enjoyed this authors Search and Rescue series but struggled to really get into the first book Run to Ground in this new series . In theory it should be perfect for me with interesting characters, charming dogs , romance and suspense as well. Happily I much preferred this story and maybe that's because I'm getting to know these characters and the way they react to situations.
We met Hugh in the previous book when he got shot trying to protect the young brother of his partners girlfriend. As this story begins he's still on leave, cursing at being shut out of what's going on at the station . Hughs about to get a very interesting case of his own though as a new woman moves into town and it's patantly obvious that Grace is to be blunt lying through her teeth!
Grace is hiding from a man who really wouldn't want her talking to the police and just how and why is something that even Grace struggles to come to terms with. Her life wasn't meant to be like this in a small town, with no money and to cap it all sharing a run down house with strangers. Still it wouldn't be all bad if only irritating Hugh would stop sneaking up on her sheesh can't a girl even go to the bathroom in peace? Apparently not!
This definitely had much more suspense running through it as things start to happen that firmly put this couple in danger. The chemistry is funny as Hugh pushes Graces buttons but she always has a snarky comeback . I'm really enjoying just how diverse these mountain guys are and even though they do the same sort of work they actually feel very different and I've got my eye on a certain big quiet guy so hopefully Otto is up next. Plus if you enjoy a little cuteness then yes there's the obvious K-9 partners but cunningly we also continue to be entertained by the Jackson family who featured in the first book . Plus yet again here the younger members definitely steal whatever scene they are in.
A slow burn romance that at times had me almost peaking from behind my hands as Hugh and Grace truly do go through the mill to reach their happy ending. I'm so pleased the author has got into her stride and look forward to the next book.

Book 2 in the Rocky Mountain K9 Unit. It is just as good as the first book. It picks up shortly after book one where Jules is visited by an old “school friend” for an extended stay in Monroe, Colorado.
Grace Robinson is on the run she was looking for the toilet but found something worse that she is trying to escape. The only job in Monroe is shovelling shit at the kennels. Grace had adjustment problems to her new life.
I found her to be quite whiney. But she pulls herself out of her pity party and makes the best out of a shitty situation. She finds her backbone throughout the book and realises that things can turn out for the better.
Hugh is recovering from a shotgun wound. He and his dog Lexi are out of commission and he hates every moment of it. So he becomes annoying to everyone around him and starts looking into the riddle that is Grace Robinson.
Hugh is a great Hero. Funny, protective and a big cuddly teddy bear.
The chemistry and the banter is there and I loved every moment of it.
“I’m sorry, but have we met?” His grin grew a predatory edge. “How could you not remember? It was only yesterday that our eyes locked and our souls recognized each other from hundreds of lives before.” “Maybe your soul confused mine for someone else’s?”
Plot wise the story kicked arse. Hugh has some trouble with a hit being out on him and Grace is on the run. At least Grace told Hugh what and who she was running from. I didn’t see the author bringing it altogether and keeping tight knit. She writes the story well and it is action packed with intense moments as well as light hearted moments.
I checked this book and the other reviews written and it seems to be like Marmite you either love it or you hate it. In this case I am an in-between-er.
