Starting over is not easy…
Rob and Dani are facing turning points in their lives though one is voluntary and the other is anything but… Rob is recovering physically from a career-ending injury while Dani is embarking on a life-long dream. Their paths cross again and again until they seem destined to walk that path together. Is this all hearts and flowers and unicorns? No, and that’s what makes their story so interesting…
“A little voice inside me told me she looked like hope. I told it to go f*** itself and leave me alone.”
Rob is finding his way at his own pace, which means no pressure from his family or anyone will move him until he is ready. Dani, on the other hand, couldn’t be more enthusiastic about the changes in her life so when she pulls Rob into her dream, the energy encompasses them both… There is attraction and chemistry as well as uncertainty between them as their close quarters and united goal uncover feelings and desires that both are hard pressed to ignore…
“Against my better judgment, despite everything I knew about men and about this man in particular, I agreed to go on a date with Rob.”
This story had me for most of the way with some plot choices at the end that, unfortunately, derailed the story for me. These characters were not perfect but they clicked in a way that steadily grew and made sense. All that effort seemed to go on the wayside in a blindside that felt wrong as it flew against the trust and feelings that had built in a hard-won struggle…
While the ending fell flat for me, the rest of the story was everything I look for in a romance with characters that had something to say and said it so well. Throw in a four-legged friend with all the charm along with it and I know I will be looking for more from this author…

I am really torn about this review because I would say that over 90% of the book, I was really into and then something happened that just kinda made me go... what just happened?

Rob was in an accident a little over a year ago that left him with a brain injury resulting in some speech problems. He doesn't work now and will sometimes sing at a local club, where he first runs into Dani. There is an instant connection there, but Rob goes running and ignores Dani when she approaches him, because he just doesn't think he's ready for more of anything right now. He doesn't come from the most stable family, with a step-father that is constantly on him about getting back out into society and a mother who tries to be supportive.

Dani is ready to take the next step in life. After graduating she is finally opening the store of her dreams with the money that her Gran left her. But her budget is tight and so she is doing almost everything herself, including the floors and some minor construction on the space. So on a particularly frustrating day, she's surprised when Rob shows up and offers to help her out. The two have that instant connection again, and Dani is cautious of Rob since he gave her the brush off to start with.

Dani and Rob are good together. They both have their own issues to work through, but Dani is opening up Rob to want more out of life. Things are going great. But then at the end, things started to go south for me. Words were spoken by Dani that kinda soured me towards the girl that I though would be the perfect fit for Rob.

I'm not going to spill the beans and tell you what happened because for someone else reading the book, it might not be such a big deal. For me, it just didn't seem right. Do they go on to have their HEA? Yes. Would I read other books by this author? I'm sure I would. Like I said I like a majority of the book and the writing was fluid and easy to read. The characters likeable and easy to connect to. It was just for me, I couldn't get over those few little words.

Without Words by Delancey Stewart is a sweet romance.

Delancy Stewart is a new-to-me author and I wasn’t disappointed in having selected this read; checking out the blurb, I knew this book was right up my alley and I wasn’t wrong. This book has everything going for it; smooth and clear writing, a steady and consistent pace, interesting characters, a lil bit of heat, some LOL moments, an original storyline, heartstrings that get tugged and a HEA. My only issue with the story was the connection between Rob and Dani - it was so awkward and stiff. A good read and way to spend whiling away your time.

Please note that an ARC was generously provided in exchange for an honest review of which this is both honest and completely voluntary.

Without Words by Delancey Stewart is a contemporary romance filled with emotion, sweetness, and it is about finding love with a person that builds you up and makes you stronger.

Roberto DeRosa was a firefighter until an accident left him with a traumatic brain injury where he had to re-learn how to move, communicate, and control his emotions. Words only seem to flow easily when he's singing lyrics while playing a guitar in his hand. Any other time, like when a beautiful, curvy, blonde approaches him and say "Hi", he's completely without words. No matter how much he wishes he could say something back. Luckily for him, fate gives him a second chance.

Dani Hodge never thought she'd see the singer/guitar player from the club the other night again especially after the unexpected brush off when she stopped to say hello. So when trying her hand at DIY on constructing her new wine and books store, she's shocked to see the very same man filling her doorway offering her a hand.

With a better second meeting than their first, Dani and Rob begin a relationship that starts off a little shaky especially when they both jump to conclusions, miscommunicate, and each have their own personal insecurities and hangups to deal with before they can find their happily-ever-after together. However, Ms. Stewart, keeps the novel balanced by throwing in enough sweet moments between Dani and Rob as they get to know each other that we can still see them grow and connect as a couple, which I enjoyed a lot.

I also liked Dani and Amy's relationship. These sisters are so close and supportive of each other and I liked how they continued to do a little tradition their grandmother did for them between each other after their grandmother passed. I would have liked to learn more about their past, especially about Amy. I hope there will be a separate book about Amy and Trevor, Rob's best friend.

Overall, Without Words by Delancey Stewart is a well-written romance with great characters and I happily recommend.

"Without Words" by Delancey Stewart is the story of Rob and Dani, two souls that both have some baggage and aren't sure about where the intense attraction can or will go. Rob, having been injured as a firefighter, has issues with his speech. Honestly, while I found him quiet, I didn't necessarily see a severe speech impediment when he spoke, although his inner thoughts did put forth his frustrations with not being able to express himself the way he wished. Regardless, I really, really liked Rob. I found him endearing (yes, sexy and hot, too, of course! :) He was so kind and I loved how he treated Dani and, of course, Samson too! Dani was on the verge of opening her dream of a wine/book store. Dani was someone I thought I could and would want to be friends with. Her hangup about guys though did wear on me some. The journey Dani and Rob venture on throughout this book, for me, was sweet and enjoyable too. It was paced well and the writing was fluid and effortless to read. Being my first book by Ms. Stewart, I was pleased and look forward to, hopefully, Amy and Trent's story next! (received copy for honest review)

I’m left without words…literally…I’m not sure I can come up with the adequate words for how phenomenal this book was. There aren’t enough stars to give it! I was moved to tears of sadness and tears of joy. It’s very rare to have characters affect me like these two did, especially Rob!

Rob is a man trapped in a dark place, shunning most people, except his inner circle. He was hurt badly in an accident as a firefighter. He has worked hard to heal his body, but he is still trying to find himself in the world. He has a hard time communicating with others, so he has decided it is better to live life alone. He does let his friends in but not completely. The only thing he trusts completely is his constant companion, his dog, Sampson. The only peace he has is playing his guitar and singing, but that begins to change when he lays eyes on Dani one night while he is singing.

Dani has also experienced darkness in her past, but it is a different kind than Rob’s. She has worked hard to put that behind her, but she still does struggle with trusting her heart to others with the exception of her sister, Amy. Yet, when she sees Rob, there is a pull, both physically and spiritually.

There is no denying the chemistry these two have, and they try so hard to deny it. They try to stay away from each other. Their minds tell them to run, but their bodies are pulling them toward each other. They begin slowly letting each other in, but how long will it be before one of them runs?

“Maybe two people with enough crap in their pasts could fill each other’s voids.” ~ Rob

I have never come across two characters who have found such a special place in my heart. They are opposites…Rob is darkness, and Dani is light! Stewart writes so well that Dani’s color and aura jump off the pages. She makes Rob want to be a part of life again, to belong to something. With the sweetness between these two, there is also heat and chemistry, and Stewart definitely knows how to build on that. She will leave you with butterflies in your stomach all while making your heart melt! All of these factors are combined perfectly to keep you flying through the book!

Delancey Stewart is a new writer to me, but she definitely has flown up to the top of my list of favorite authors. Without Words is well-written with fantastic character development. She manages to make characters out of a sweet woman, Dani’s Nan, who is no longer here, and a sweet, loving dog, Sampson. Add in Trent and Amy and this book is PERFECTION! I’m hoping we might get Amy’s story later on!

This was a cute romance not very involved but flowed easy with a nice plot. The main characters Dani and Rob were easy to like and were quiet enjoyable to read about.

Rob is recovering from being in a coma.He still has issues and is not yet a hundred 100 percent.Still dealing with physical and mental issues he is working things out on what he plans to do with the rest of his life.Meeting Dani seemed to put the spunk back in him.Gave him hope and made him happy just by spending time with her.She was drawing him out of his shell little by little.

I loved Rob he had a sense of humor, was talented, somber and perhaps withdrawn and sweet but with everything he has gone through the past year you had to expect the good with the bad.

Dani had a vibrant personality was upbeat, funny, sweet and kind and had a sense of humor.

Dani and Rob's chemistry was apparent from their very first pages. The head over heels kind. These two made a really cute couple. With both working through their own insecurities their romance had some ups and downs but there was no doubt they truly cared for one another.

The story contained a great cast of characters .My favorite part of the story had to be the hide and seek games that Dani and Rob played with one another kept things interesting.

Light fun read that we throughly enjoyed. This was a first time author for us and as we enjoyed the story for me though I need more excitement and drama and romance in the books that I read.

A very adorable, sweet story. Rob is a man without words he had a accident that makes him hard to talk so he has to speak slowly and he gets frustrated. Rob meets Dani at the club he plays for and is struck instantly but afraid until the next time they meet. Dani is trying to start her own business and needs some help with the construction part. Rob helps Dani but the pull between them is getting even more intense. Great romance story! 4/5 stars ****Reviewed for Sweet & Spicy Read provided for a voluntarily Advanced Reader Copy of this book ****

Rob worked hard to recover from his injuries but after a while it seemed like he wasn’t going to get any better. He’s living half a life, unsure where he’s going to go from here, with just a few friends, his dog, and the peace that playing his guitar brings him. Then he meets her. While Rob is complicated and troubled, with a some issues that he definitely needs to address, Dani helps shake things up enough to help him get back to living.

Dani is drawn to Rob but her history hasn’t left her with a lot of faith in men. And this one is more complicated that most … I’m deeply amused by the fact that it isn’t the person with the brain trauma that has the most difficulty communicating 🙂 While it may take longer for Rob to come up with the words, and his accident has left him with some self-esteem issues, when he needs to get things across he does. Dani on the other hand does a WHOLE lot of assuming – about Rob, about her family, about herself. She’s absolutely terrible about actually asking what is going on instead of jumping to conclusions. And she’d be a whole lot better off if she started because she causes so many of their issues.

Rob and Dani definitely don’t have an easy go of it. Between her romantic history and his lack of confidence, they run into quite a few speed bumps along the way. But Rob isn’t one to give up easily – he wouldn’t have gotten as far as he has if he did – and with a little patience and help from their friends they eventually figure things out.

(Amazon does not let you half rate, but future readers should know the story is a solid 3.5 read ... it was a solid 4 star read until ...)

I'm not gonna lie, the blurb hooked me on this one. And because of the blurb, I waited until I was in the right space mentally to read it because I was sure it would gut me. And for the most part, the book was soooooooo heart-breakingly-warming. But then things happen. Things are said. And the entire thing went down fast ....

This is not my first time with an author/story going wackadoodle on me. I've said this before but apparently I need to remind some people: Words matter. We should be really careful how we string them together . The only reason I made it to the end of this book is because the wording disaster didn't happen until the almost end.

This story as a whole is really actually well done and well written. Dani and Rob are two very likeable characters that play off each other well. Their connection is apparent and their struggles are real. And struggles they had. Which is going to lead me to the portion of this review that is #eyetwitching ...

I'm not going to put in a quote or hide a spoiler because I'm really curious to see how many people catch the insurmountable error that Delancey Stewart made in this story. But I will say this, Rob suffers from a very traumatic brain injury. He suffers from some speech impediments because of it. He deals with this the best he can. There is a point in the story where Dani verbalizes her frustrations in how he deals with it. Where she diminishes him for his choices. That never should have happened. It is not her pain. It is not her trauma. She doesn't get the choice on how he survives it. She doesn't get an opinion. If she was standing in front of me today I would have throat punched her. So authors, chose your words carefully. They matter....

I really liked this book. Rob was a man who knew what he wanted, but found it extremely difficult to communicate due to aa accident that left him relearning things that everyone takes for granted. Dani was a strong, independent woman who swore off men and was determined to realize her dream of owning her own business.
When Rob and Dani meet for the first time, they are attracted, but she takes his silence as him not being interested. Upon their second meeting, they start 'talking' and working together. Although they feel a pull towards one another, they continuously push the other away. He feels that she deserves better and will eventually leave him (like his ex) and she thinks he is planning on leaving and doesn't want to interfere with his choices.
When one night changes everything and one pushe the other away again, can they find a way to be together? Will Rob go home to his dad and leave her behind? Can Dani open up her heart again, or will she let Rob leave without fighting for them? Pick up Without Words today.

This is the first time in reading this author with what it had as a storyline with the characters drawing me in. She will pull on your emotions right away thanks to what Roberto has gone through. Then how these two cross paths when Roberto does with Dani you sit down for the duration. Heat starts to sizzle from the connection between the two. She does well keeping us into this building relationship as dreams are built but some change course. Nice characters that go with these two to make for a full bodied read with romance fueling it. This gets a great wrap up with a satisfied feeling at the end.

Every once in awhile I come across a young adult romance that has all the typical plots and conflicts of that genre, but still manages to surprise me. And by typical plots and conflicts I mean the hero and heroine with the unfortunate childhoods, and really poor communication skills. I spend a good deal of time reading YA romances wanting to scream “Just talk to each other all ready!” Except this time, there’s actually a good reason for the hero to not communicate well.

Roberto deRosa made a life for himself as a firefighter in San Diego. Growing up, he was the middle child of three boys. The oldest was the smartest, the youngest the most charming, but even though he was the “workhorse” of the family vineyard in Mexico, Rob was overlooked and left out of his father’s will. But life was working just fine for him until an accident during a warehouse fire resulted in a traumatic brain injury. After a year of rehab, physically he’s fine, but now his brain functions a little slower, and the words don’t come out as effortlessly as they used to.

Danielle Hodges is finally about to open the combination wine bar and bookstore she’s been dreaming of for years. Raised by her grandmother, she grew up believing men won’t stick around, and after her last relationship gave her no reason to believe otherwise, she’s decided to focus only on her shop. But when she meets Rob at a bar, and then sees him again a couple days later when he happens to walk by her shop and offer his help, she’s reluctantly smitten. Her friendly, upbeat, talkative personality is a stark contrast to Rob’s new personality, which is quiet and slightly brooding.

For Rob, Dani is his best hope for returning to the life he lost.

This had been the first day I’d spent with someone who didn’t know everything about what had happened to me in the last year, who didn’t know all the things that were wrong with me. Who didn’t ask. It had been like a vacation. I’d spent a whole day away from myself.

Of course, there’s the requisite angst as a result of them not talking about how they feel, and the back and forth as a result. Dani’s insecurities about men get the best of her steely resolve to be independent and self-reliant.

All the focus and center I’d found this morning were sucked down into the swirling vortex of uncertainty. I sat on the green couch, still holding the photo, and let myself cry. I’d be focused and strong tomorrow. Today I was confused and lonely.

Rob and Dani are heartwarming characters who are doing their best to deal with the hand life has dealt them, to find their way in life. When they meet, the attraction is instant, but neither jumps feet first into the relationship. The slow progression from friends to lovers is sweet and satisfying. There’s a scene with them washing hands in a sink that is reminiscent of Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze spinning pottery on the wheel in Ghost that almost had me fanning myself, it was so steamy. (Did I just date myself with that reference?!)

I loved Rob and Dani’s story. My heart broke for the challenges Rob faced because of his brain injury, and cheered when he found kind, sweet Dani. The hero and heroine are people you can root for, and the side characters added extra dimension and depth to their story. It doesn’t happen often, but I was very pleasantly surprised by - and thoroughly enjoyed - this young adult romance!

"This was insane. I'd never been on a knife's edge like this, never wanted so badly for a man to just. Touch. Me." Yes, Delancey Stewart builds up some major chemistry and heat in her new book! Our hero, Rob deRosa, may have been injured, but he definitely has the smoldering and hot hero requirement. Rob has suffered an traumatic brain injury while on the job as a firefighter. The subject is handled so well and makes the character vulnerable in ways that I really enjoyed. Make no mistake, Rob is still our alpha hero! I enjoyed getting insight of his thought process.

Dani, our heroine, is instantly attracted to him as he sings on stage at a club. When he appears again out of the blue and begins to help renovate her store, the attraction can't be denied. Dani is fiercely independent and has to find a way to let Rob into her life. The story that leads up to their "happily ever after" has some twists and turns. I really enjoyed the story that gets us there.

Great story and wonderful characters!

**I received Without Words from Entangled Publishing and Net Galley in exchange for a voluntary and hones review**

Without Words by Delancy Stewart is the first book in what I hope will be a series of books featuring Dani's sister, Amy, Trent and all of the firemen from Rob's old firehouse. This book had me from the first paragraph to the conclusion with the tender way the author wrote about TBI injury Roberto had. We always hear about our soldiers who have this after fighting overseas but even I didn't think of a firefighter having one after an accident.

Danielle Hodge is finally realizing her dream of opening a wine and book shop in Ocean Beach, CA. But first she has to find a carpenter who will help her with cabinetry, counters and tables. When her sister drag's her to a bar where she meets Rob playing his guitar. There's instant attraction between the two but Rob is still struggling with speaking clearly after his TBI injury. But Dani doesn't care because she's interested in the person within Rob who is very caring. When he comes to her aid after the tile saw breaks a few too many tiles, they soon hit it off. I loved how the author brings Samson the dog into the story even when Dani soon makes them a couple. But Rob will soon be faced with a decision that could have him leaving Ocean Beach for his families winery. Will he leave or will he chose to stay and pursue his carpentry skills?

All his life he has been in the shadow of his brothers and when Roberto DerRosa decides to become a fire fighter he feels like he finally found his niche. But an accident leaves him having to learn how to talk and walk again he feels adrift but he now has to find something new to do. But his friend and fellow firefighter gives him a singing gig in his bar as well as live with him he meets Dani. Little does he know that she has the answer that he's been waiting for that will lead him to a new career. But when his brother shows up with news about their father who will Rob choose? He doesn't want to fail Dani, his family or always being the middle sibling with no real purpose.

This is the first book by Delancy Stewart I've read but when the next book mentioned on her website is available I'll be waiting anxiously for it to be released.

Every now and then you read a story that is so beautiful it leaves you in the state of awe for a long while after. Without Words is one of those stories. It is heart-shattering with its pain, torment, and agony, it is raw with life-like emotions and deep feelings, yet it heals all the wounds with the devotion and tenderness, the pure joy of life shining through.
Roberto DeRosa and Dani Hodge have a nearly magical connection, the energy around them sizzling in the air with heat and yearning. It is like their broken souls recognize the need for comfort in each other - like they are the two half's of a whole finally coming together.
Both Rob and Dani had issues from the past, from their childhood, that comes to the surface mudding the waters and churning the emotions. With Dani's trust issues and fear of abandonment Rob's problems to communicate might seem like the worst match, but they have to learn to connect on a deeper lever to get over the hurdles and interact in a way that is suitable for both.
The process of healing, learning and growing as a human being is a delicate and fragile development for both Dani and Rob, however with the support of their loved ones, and with each other, they find the safe haven, the place of trust, faith, and hope where this kind of flourishing is possible.
Without Words amazed me with its beauty and depth. The dual first person point of view gave the insights to Rob's mind that was needed with his challenge to communicate and brought alive the intensity of those two bruised souls seeking for each other. It made me want to believe in love at the first sight and in soulmates, in the one true match. It captivated my mind and charmed my heart, it filled me with joy, left my smiling and believing in serendipity.
What an alluring story of love and life!

Rob DeRosa has spent the last year recovering from a traumatic brain injury incurred in the line of duty as a firefighter. He has learned to walk again and is still working on his speaking abilities. While his thinking process is fine, it’s translating those thoughts to words he struggles with (and we are reminded of this frequently in the book). He also struggles with emotions being overwhelming. He has been living with his best friend Trent, rent free, while he tries to figure out what direction his life should go. Sampson, his 130 pound dog, is his constant companion. Rob plays guitar and sings in Trent’s bar as a way to sift through anything particularly tough he’s struggling to work out.

Dani Hodge is a bit jaded from her upbringing and recent jilt from her ex-boyfriend. She believes men always leave, so why start anything just to get your heart broken. When her mom passes, her Nan takes her and her sister in. They grow up very happy with her. When Nan passes, Dani finishes college and buys space to open her own shop. She is standing out in front of the shop yelling at the circular saw she’s using to update/upgrade the space when Rob chances by and offers to help.

I had a hard time connecting to Dani with all her whining. Then, her comment about Rob’s injury just sealed her fate with me.
I loved Rob. He was sweet and attentive. He just needed a nudge to realize his passion and new path. Rob went out of his way, bent over backwards, to do whatever Dani asked of him, just to keep her in his life. Her wishy-washy attitude was annoying. Loved his proposal!

Without Words by Delancey Stewart was sweet, charming and a bit sad all in one. It had a hero that endeared you to him and a heroine that filled his life with light and hope.

Roberto’s (Rob) DeRosa’s life changed drastically after an accident in the line of duty. As a firefighter, he knew the risks. Now he is trying to rebuild his life and find new direction after a life-altering injury. After learning to do things again, he continues to have difficulty communicating. Talking to women is suddenly more than he can do. He finds solace performing. It provides the calm he so desperately needs.

Dani Hodge is finally seeing her dreams coming true, but she needs help finishing the construction of her new combination wine and book store. To her surprise, the man who ignored her at the bar and was attracted too is now willing to help her.

Dani sees Rob for the first time performing at a bar while out with her sister. Feeling an instant attraction, she is drawn to this man, but when she attempts to talk to him, she feels rejected when he does not talk to her. Then as if fate intervened, he finds her needing help and offers to give her a hand. Dani accepts, though she is cautious. But as they begin to spend time together, she begins to learn more about him and why he has trouble communicating.

I loved Rob. He was so strong and determined, but the accident left him vulnerable and trying to find his way again. Dani was almost the complete opposite to him. She was open, bubbly and likeable, though she did sometimes drive me crazy with her actions. I found her at times to be indifferent to what happened to Rob and how it affected him. But you could also see her side as well, as communicating did not come easy to Rob. However, in Dani, he found the same calm performing gave him.

Though the connection between these two was strong, though they each carried insecurities and doubts that kept getting in the way. And when it seemed they might find a way, outside factors threatened to take them apart.

I enjoyed the story, how it flowed, the characters, especially the broken hero and their friends. And we can’t forget Rob’s dog. I found Without Words to be a touching and romantic, with a touch of sadness and hope.

Light, sweet and sexy.

Almost a year after his accident, ex-firefighter Rob DeRosa is still trying to figure out what to do with his life while playing the guitar at his friend’s bar at nights and walking his dog under the San Diego sun during the day. He can never be a fireman again, he had to relearn how to walk and talk and there’s really not much that interests him. Until he literally feels the Earth move when he stares straight into bright blue eyes that instantly seem to calm everything in him. Can he gather the courage to talk to her?

If only Do-It-Yourself were that simple Dani Hodge wouldn’t have be cursing at the dreaded tile saw where anyone and everyone could hear. Fortunately for her, the man who comes to her rescue is none other than the silent guitar player who ignored her at a bar. Even though her brain short-circuits just by looking at him, she can’t refuse his offer to help otherwise her dream of opening a wine/book store will turn into a nightmare. But can she open up her heart to believe he’s not just temporary?

Without Words is my first book by author Delancey Steward and hopefully it won’t be the last. I found it to be touching, sweet and sexy with endearing characters, including Dani’s sister and Rob’s BFF Trent who will hopefully get their own book, and who can resist a supportive, sweet, understand sidekick of the four legged variety? Sampson, Rob’s dog was adorable! Oh and Trent and Rob’s firemen friends...

The pacing was good. Being from San Diego myself, I really enjoyed the vivid imagery of a place I’m so familiar with, it made me want to visit walk around OB, go to Balboa and see everything from the author’s perspective. The plot was interesting on Rob’s side, although the family dynamic on his father’s side also hit home and didn’t ring true with me because my father’s family is from Ensenada too and I’ve heard of the traditions mentioned in the story that would create such conflict.

Rob is such an interesting character. He’s the strong and silent type with hidden vulnerability, I only wish Steward would have delved more into his characterization. I feel as though their story had the potential to be deeply moving. Dani was bubbly and likeable, but a bit too guarded and at one point insensitive to Rob’s condition. Their chemistry was undeniable though and I loved every sweet, sexy moment they spent together.

Without Words is a standalone contemporary romance by Delancey Steward. It is told from both points of view and has a happy ending. Fans of sweet and sexy romance will enjoy it.
