A surprising twist on the life-after-death genre, Beforelife is a life-before-life story, where those who remember their "past lives" are considered, well, aberrant. I really enjoyed this sideways look at the After-life, and was pleasantly surprised to find a Canadian protagonist! Well, at least he'd been Canadian the last time...

I really liked the premise of this story - the description reminded me a bit of the Amazon series Forever with Maya Rudolph and Fred Armisen. The humour was here for this book as well, though sometimes a bit muddled because of all the references.

The book started out strong, but I felt like it lost cohesion over a few short chapters. I had a difficult time following the story and after a while I felt lost. I'm willing to give the finalized print a try. It may be that the ARC was so very under-edited that it threw me for a loop.

It's funny but the forward momentum of the plot gets lost in endless side moments that seem to add little to the story.

DNF.

I really wanted to get into this book, but I just couldn't. I tried, but it wasn't for me.

I can't remember the last time I had this much fun reading a book! It's funny, inventive, with great characters, a zippy plot, and terrific world building. Don't miss this one!
