It seems like time to mention a few good mysteries since I have not done so in a while. My guess is that you are likely familiar with Jeffery Archer's writing since he has sold roughly 330 million books worldwide. I read (and reread) Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less which was published in 1974 and would still recommend it for its twists in turns. His early works continue to be my favorites, and recently some individual short stories are becoming available for purchase to be read electronically. One is "CHEAP AT HALF THE PRICE" and involves Consuela Rosenheim who is shopping in London for an ideal birthday present for herself and thinking about finding a new husband, too. It’s light, short and typically Archer with a fun twist at the end. Another is "NEVER STOP ON THE MOTORWAY" which is more of a thriller and involves the danger which Diana, a single Mum, faces as she attempts to flee a menacing van on the highway. Once again, classic Archer in that the ending is almost impossible to predict.
This was a fun story about the problems of finding the right birthday present for the super rich. It was cutting, tongue in cheek and enjoyable.
Another short story by Jeffrey Archer embodying many of the ingredients of his novels in a condensed version. Mr Archer can certainly be compared to O Henry in setting up a surprise ending quite logically. Mrs Consuela Rosenheim, a very beautiful lady indeed, has determined that her best path to success is marrying men that are financially quite successful, and working towards a rewarding divorce settlement.
Consuela and her husband have traveled from their home in New York to London where her husband has a meeting arranged to discuss his purchase of another bank to add to his holdings. While there Consuela decides to go out and shop for her birthday present and present it to her husband for his pleasure in buying it for her. The gist of the story is the manner that Consuela goes about getting both her birthday present and continuing her normal life's activities. Very well done and another gem by Mr Archer to enjoy.
This is a short story from Jeffrey Archer's Twelve Red Herrings, re-released as an ebook short. If you haven't already read it grab it now!
Jeffrey Archer has been a long time favorite for many years. This story is no exception. I will have to dig out more books by Archer. I forgot how lovely his short stories were.
