Oh no! I thought here we go again with another missing girl mystery. However, this book hardly had a policeman in it, as the story unfolded from various characters and a bit of time travel. Lisa Jewell also has the ability to paint detailed scenes to give the reader a chance to let the imagination take over, e.g the café scene with Floyd. I really enjoyed the twists and turns, but could not give it five stars as the whole Floyd/Poppy relationship felt odd.

I haven't exactly avoided Lisa Jewell but I was under the impression she was a chick-lit author. Reading "Then She Was Gone" has shown me that whilst she isn't in the mainstream of thriller writers she has a good sense of whodunit plotting. So if you like police detective plots with a complete catch of red herrings this book is for you.
For previous readers familiar with Jack Stratton and want to know more about his past this is a must. I will be looking back over the author's other Jack Stratton volumes and starting from the first published see what else she has to offer. Whilst I hesitate to call myself a fan I will admit to admiration it cannot be easy to intertwine this level of plotting and keep your main fan base entertained.
If you want spoilers or details of the book read the other reviews or the plot description on the cover.

Ellie Mack, a schoolgirl goes missing just before her GCSE exams. An intelligent, vivacious girl her disappearance fragments her loving family and destroys her parents once happy marriage. Ten years later, Ellie's mother enters into a relationship with a man whose nine year old daughter bears a striking resemblance to Ellie. A beautiful and absorbing novel about the nature of family relationships and loss. Keep the tissues ready.

This is the first book I have read of this author and it definitely won't be my last. I really enjoyed getting to know the characters and it had me hooked from the first page. It had a few twists and turns that I wasn't expecting and a lovely ending which all added to the overall enjoyment of the book. I would definitely recommend reading this authors books.

Well written, believable, tense and set at just the right pace, this story gripped me from the start and had all the elements of a great mystery thriller.

This was the first book that I've read by Lisa Jewell but definitely won't be the last.

Many thanks to TBC, the author and Netgalley who provided me with this ARC. I chose to read it and give a voluntary and unbiased review.

Loved this book - it was my first Lisa Jewell novel. I liked the several voices telling the story and enjoyed putting it all together. I liked Laurel and her growing realisation that she had lt her family down seemed real. I was amazed by her fortitude and so glad the loss of her daughter did have a positive outcome. I did not find Floyd as convincing nor could I get a grip on Noelle. However I was gripped and will be ready no more by this author.

Lisa Jewell is a well established and respected author and this, her latest novel is well worthy of that respect.
It follows the story of Ellie Mack 15 year old GCSE student who is approaching her exams, and her family. With the gorgeous boyfriend Theo being a high achiever Ellie feels she needs a little extra help with her maths so her mum Laurel enlists the help of local tutor Noelle Donnelly. From there on in life for the Mack family is never the same as Ellie goes missing shortly afterwards.
I really don't want to give too much away with this review as I feel it's a journey the reader needs to take themselves in order to appreciate the complexity of some of the characters. Suffice to say there are twists and cul de sacs brilliantly interwoven by the author throughout and just when you think events can't get any more disturbing more information comes to light to make you wonder just how much more Laurel can endure in her search for the truth about her daughter's disappearance.
By the end of this book I felt I had been through an emotional wringer. How an author can take the reader through such a journey by putting words on a page will never cease to earn my respect. Would I buy this book? YES! Buy the book, buy a big box of tissues and settle in for one of the most emotional reads of your life!

I really enjoyed the last book I read by Lisa Jewell, so I was looking forward ti reading The She Was Gone.
Ellie is a fifteen year old girl, starting her exams when she goes missing one day. her parents are convinced she hasn't run away as the police suggest but there is no trace of Ellie.
We see the book in the present day and also the past as we learn about Ellie's parents,Laurel and Patrick and their separation, the man Laurel meets not long after Ellie's remains have been found.
As Laurel begins to rebuild her life, with her children all grown up, Ellie finally put to rest, Laurel begins to feel as she is moving on. As she entwines herself into her new relationship, she is shocked when she meets his family.
The book is a very easy read despite it flitting back and forwards in time. The characters are well written, and despite working out the connection, I think the clues were actually leading the reader to work it all out. The aftermath and explanation was very well written, so whilst there is no final page plot twist in essence, it had me gripped until the final page.

This had me captivated from the very start. This book will grip you & take you on a journey through a version of events from the perspective of four main characters. I loved everything about this book & could not put it down. Great summer read - 5 out of 5 stars *****

Ellie disappears on the way to the library. She's 15 her whole life in front of her but is classed as a run away but is she?
Her parents do not think so.
What follows is a story told from a number of view points. Laurel is the mother who has become a shell of the woman she was,to the detriment of the children she still has and her marriage. Laurels journey through this book is compelling. You feel the loss of her child, the disbelief but also the fact that as she has become so insular she is unaware of her effects upon everyone around her. As a mother you can understand how this could occur and want other family members to be honest with her about how they are feeling and try and mend what is broken.
Ellies point of view is the most heartbreaking thing I have read and it would be a real spoiler to discuss this further but it is enough to say,the horror of the insight of this is truly tear jerking.
Bring in the characters of Poppy and Floyd of Sj and the parallels with her fathers relationship with Noelle, you are aware of how fate and the need to address past issues are essential but the outcome make you question if that is what you would want to happen.
Read the epilogue at your own peril -or rather - have a box of tissues with you.Ugly crying alert
This book varies in speed and at times you wish it would be quicker but I am not sure if that is because yet another twist has occurred and you want to know the outcome.
This book makes you reflect, laugh, cry and most of all thank goodness this has not happened to anyone you know.
A great 5 star read

A really enjoyable read. Lisa Jewell is one of my 'go to' authors anyway and gets better with each novel. Multifaceted characters well developed and a plot that draws you in and surprises you when you least expect it. Recommend to all

Well written page turner, However, slightly far-fetched and unconvincing ending.

I would like to thank Random House UK and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘Then She Was Gone’ by Lisa Jewell, in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
Laurel lives with husband Paul, son Jake and daughters Hanna and Ellie, but in May 2005 Ellie disappears and her marriage to Paul is unable to survive Laurel’s sorrow and comes to an end.
But now, ten years later, Laurel meets Floyd in a café and is introduced to his nine-year-old daughter Poppy who is old beyond her years and looks amazingly like Laurel’s missing daughter Ellie! Is Floyd the man of her dreams or is he hiding secrets? And what became of Ellie? Did she run away or is she dead?
‘Then She Was Gone’ is a disturbing psychological thriller which I thoroughly enjoyed reading. It has a gripping storyline, believable characters, and was so easy to read that I finished it in just over a day. An excellent novel and one I can thoroughly recommend.

An interesting read. A tale of love and obsession ,guilt and letting go. Complex and layered tho I did work out what had happened fairly early on.

Really good unusual read. I had no idea where the plot was going and it kept me hooked. The writing is powerful and you can feel the raw emotions of the characters. loved it!

Set in London but without any real sense of place, I did still want to read this as it sounded creepy and mysterious. The writing is as good as always and the characters mixed up and emotional. Lisa Jewell does like to get inside her characters and throw you off scent, give them more obstacles than a mad episode of The Crystal Maze.

Then She Was Gone is told mainly from Laurel’s point of view, but there are flashbacks into Ellie’s life before she went missing . I didn't feel these chapters worked as well as the others as Laurel's voice and viewpoint were stronger for me. Interesting to have flashbacks into her life though.

It was the impact on Ellie's disappearance and the aftermath which was the real strengths of this novel for me. I did guess the twists but the shock of having your daughter disappear and then meeting a man with a daughter who looks similar? Creepy indeed

I have read several books by this author and this one is by far my favourite. It is harrowing at times and I was quite overwhelmed reading some of the content. However, it is a very well told story of a diverse family coping with tradegy, each finding their own path to follow afterwards and finally coming together. I'd thoroughly recommend this book.

I thought Lisa Jewell's book I Found You couldn't be beaten, but Then She Was Gone blows it out of the water and surpasses it, and that in itself is incredible given how good the previous book was.
Ellie was 15 when she disappeared 10 years previously, her Mother Laurel had never given up hope of finding her, and so begins this thrilling psychological thriller. I'm not going to give anymore synopsis sometimes reviewers can say too much , with this book you need to come across every scene to understand the power they have.
The twists and turns will send you dizzy, and make you feel so many emotions this book should come with a hazard warning.
An engrossing wonderful book, I am in awe of this authors imagination and how she deftly weaves this tale.
I didn't think I could cope with anymore emotion and just when I thought everything was tied up she's gives us a few last pages that........well all I can say is Books never make me cry ....how wrong I was
