If for the rest of my life, I could have only one book, it would be this one. My favorite quote is "...the forest is not only something to be understood, it is also something to be felt." My favorite image is the fiddlehead fern unfurling.

I learned a great deal by reading this book, including how to look at Nature, how to relate to it, how to feel the poetry of it.

The book's images catch the attention, make it impossible to just flip through the pages. To read this book is to pause, to absorb how much there is to know about life on this planet. The text often reads like poetry.

The production of this book obviously was given the time and attention it deserved. Even the book jacket is a work of beauty. Take it off. Like the forest, there is beauty hidden in unexpected places.

But most of all, I fell in love with this book because I felt as if I were in conversation with the authors as we walked together through the forest and became one with it.

Beautiful photography and educational text. Llewellyn and Maloof have put together a complete resource from microscopic insect to the goliath trees and everything in between.

I received an ARC for an honest review.
An amazing book about the living forest from several different angles. I loved the section about the animals in the forest and the birds. Not only are there gorgeous photos but information paired with it. I especially loved the photos of the great blue herons, my favorite and the nictitating membrane on the vulture.

Absolutely gorgeous book! Reading and viewing the photographs transported me to the middle of the forest. I felt as if I was there.

The accompanying text is informative. The subjects covered are not just the trees, but the animals and other plants that thrive. Very stunning photography of the fauna. This will make a perfect coffee table book for anyone who loves the forest and nature.

An absolutely gorgeous reminder of how important our forests are to the biosphere. If there was ever a more convincing argument for nature conservation, it's the pictures in "The Living Forest." Made me want to go outside and look at everything.

Gorgeous pictures that kept me memorized from page to page. Should have broken the text into smaller segments though, as the chunk paragraph is not inviting to read. Otherwise, would make a great coffee table book. Highly recommend this book.

This book is a treasure! Stunning photographs are accompanied by engaging descriptions of the many layers of life in the forest. As a master naturalist, I enjoyed reading about the forest ecosystem and appreciated the author's attention to detail; as a parent, I would enjoy sharing this book with my child to spark early interest in becoming more familiar with the natural world. The author and photographer have done an exceptional job of communicating their own love for the forest, and any reader will come away from the book with a deeper sense of awe and wonder at this magnificent natural resource. Even the aesthetic/spiritual aspect of nature is represented here with a final chapter that focuses on the beauty of the forest and its impact on those open to connecting with nature. Highly recommended as a coffee table book for general readership, as well as a book for natural history fans.

Beautiful book. the pictures are just stunning throughout the book. Who knew the bark of a tree could be so beautiful. The actual text of the book which is very minimal, gives you a whole new outlook on walking through the forest. We usually look for wildlife or flowers but if you look a bit closer there is so much more to see. This book will help you see it too.

I received this book from the Author or Publisher via Netgalley.com to read and review.

This is a beautiful book, full of wonderful photography by Robert Llewellyn. The narrative is written by Joan Maloof who explores the complex ecosystem of the forest from the canopy, the birds and creatures of the forest, the lifecycle of trees, their roots and leaves, to fungi, lichens, mosses and ferns. The forests explored and photographed are on the eastern seaboard of the United States, mainly in Virginia and the Carolinas as far as I can tell, nevertheless the complexities and wonder of the forests' ecosystem applies globally.

To be honest, at times I found the narrative irritatingly dumbed down, almost as if the book were written for children, but then there would be information less easily digestible that required a slowing down and some thought to understand. Sometimes dumbed down is good! I would love to own a hard copy of this book so that I could enjoy the photographs and re-read it whenever I felt like it.

Oh wow, a fantastic book of stunning photographs and very intresting facts about nature's forests and the life found therein. Really a complete look at forests from the common topics of its animals and some of their unique characteristics, to the pattern the beetles make in the bark and how the trees sense/see light and breathe! There were so many beautuful photos and mix of both cool and intresting facts that i think this book could really appeal to all ages as well. The only reason I could not give it 5 stars was because the writers in the beginning and end specifically mentioned the forests "spirit" but fail to define what they mean by that other it has beauty and stirs emotion and poetry in people (which I would say it appeals to our spirit?). If a spiritual aspect is going to be added then it should be defined and justified, instead I think it distracted and took away from an otherwise spectacular book on forests!

The photography in this book was absolutely phenomenal. This book helps reaffirm why I live in the mountains rather than in the city.

I received a copy of this book through NetGalley for an honest opinion. My thanks to Robert Llewellyn; Joan Maloof and Timber Press for the opportunity.

I will post on Goodreads and on Amazon closer to the release date.

This is a beautiful book, the photographs are absolutely fabulous. But this not only a book about photos, it explains a little about the forest, about the inhabitants of the forest; as if we are walking through the forest , and having the author pointing out and explaining all the nuances of the plants and life within this beautiful area.
It really made me think and absorb these surroundings in my next walk in the forest, and actually understand the soothing life within its canopy.

This is a visually stunning look at how all living things depend on the forests of our planet to survive. From insects, birds, reptiles and mammals, we all need trees to live. From providing homes for millions of species to purifying the air and controlling our weather patterns, forests are essential for life on earth. Llewellyn doesn’t preach, he states the facts with elegance and ease and incorporates incredibly beautiful photos of forests and the animals that live in them and depend upon them. Can we get a copy of this to all the members of congress?
