Thanks to NetGalley and Casablanca for a copy of this book. This book reminded me of why I fell in love with books of this genre. I was introduced to Georgette Heyer by my mother in law many years ago whilst looking for something to read when visiting. Have been a fan of regency romances since. This book is a great collection of short stories.

Finding unpublished Georgette Heyer stories is like finding buried treasure. These short stories, most published previously in Pistols for Two, but with three new ones that had appeared in magazines, are gems. Runaway brides/grooms; heroes with wit and accomplishment; saucy heroines -- so many of the characters we have come to know and love in GH's longer novels, presented in budding form, the seed of what they will become later. And, as always w/GH, there is context about the Regency period -- whether the language, the settings or the many types of characters with which she populates her books A must for all GH fans, and likely to create a new generation of people who love escaping to the Regency world.
(I received an ARC from NetGalley. Opinions are my own.)

Heyer manages to make even the shortest stories sparkle with wit and boldness. She can sketch characters with just a few words and have you intently hoping to get to their happily ever after. Yes, a lot of the concepts of these stories were used in her longer novels. But each story is unique, and they should all be read and appreciated. There are a LOT of stories here, and they're all wonderful. The three new stories make it worth getting if you have Pistols For Two.

Anyone who is a fan of Georgette Heyer has probably already read Pistols for Two, so knows it’s a delightful collection of short stories that are full of her trademark wit and flare for the Georgian and Regency periods. Even if you have already read Pistols for Two, there are three new stories to enjoy here containing elopements, a governess, and coach travel galore – all of which contain seeds for many of her longer novels.

Which is a great reason to read this even if you’ve never read a Heyer book before, but are interested in starting somewhere. These stories are all very short and easy to read, there is a lot of instalove in them but also plenty of humour. I love Full Moon for the silly way the hero tries to help the heroine sneak back into the house. Pistols for Two is great fun as well, concentrating more on the damage romance can do to a friendship rather than love itself. I also love A Clandestine Affair and A Husband for Fanny for their older characters and second chance story lines. To Have the Honour is rather wonderful too.

The new stories are Pursuit, Runaway Match and Incident on the Bath Road, all of which are at the end, and fit in perfectly with the rest of the stories.

These stories are all very short and there are several recurring themes – most noticeably elopements – which doesn’t quite show off the sheer range and skill Heyer covers in her longer novels. There isn’t as much chance for witty repartee, nor convoluted plots, nor big families and the troubles various siblings can get into. But there are lots of seeds planted here that Heyer grew into some of my favourites, both in plots and characters – Sylvester, The Black Sheep, A Lady of Quality, A Civil Contract, The Corinthian, The Nonesuch and many more.

In all, this is a lovely collection that’s a great taster of what Heyer has to offer and is perfect for any fans of Georgian and Regency romances. Even if you already have most of them, it’s still worth a look for the three new ones and an easy escape into something light, fun and enjoyable.

A collection of short love stories, some of them never published before, by one of the most famous author of Regency romances. This anthology will warm your heart in view of the next Christmas holidays.

4.5 stars
This is re-issue of Pistols for Two but does feature three stories written in the 1930s that were not featured in the original anthology & are published here for the first time
I’ve read all of Georgette Heyer’s book so many times that my paper copies fell to pieces. I adore her books & her work is the benchmark for the Regency & Georgian romances I love today. Her accuracy is faultless for example in Pursuit their journey along The Great North Road had me able to track their journey & several inns like the Ram Jam are still in existence, it’s those little details that set her apart. Her characterisation is spot on too. However a short story doesn’t give her flair enough scope to fully develop her characters nor the plot & I’m left wanting more. My two favourites from the anthology are Pistols for Two & A Husband for Fanny

This was a wonderful collection of short stories from one of my all-time favorite authors! Previously published as Pistols For Two, this anthology contains three "new" stories that were recently re-discovered.

There is a little bit for everyone in there: second chances, friends meeting at dawn over a woman both love, insta-love (even a very spontaneous engagement after all of half a day), a little gothic horror, and overall plenty of good fun and romance. Some of these stories I personally found much too short to enjoy, but the collection showcases Heyer's immense talent as a writer, and it was fun to read.

My favorite stories: A Clandestine Affair (two young people run off, his cousin and her aunt (who used to be engaged) race after them to stop them from going all the way to Gretna), Full Moon (man overhears that he is apparently going to a friend's house to marry the daughter of the house), and To Have the Honor (oldest son comes back from the war to learn that his father left him massive debts and expected his son to marry his rich cousin).

This is a wonderful collection of regency romance short stories! Makes you wish that they were full length novels. This collection is best taken in small doses, just as Heyer intended them to be read. Each story is clean, sweet and romantic. Which I forgot is also as nice is the hot, dirty and intense reads.

Thank you NetGalley and publisher for sharing this with me.

Georgette Heyer’s sweet romances are certainly old-fashioned. The closest her hero and heroine come to having a physical relationship is a kissed hand. But it is really fun to renew an acquaintanceship with her distinct brand of romance along the post road to Gretna Green.

This is a very entertaining collection of short stories!

What a fun regency read. They are short stories and loved the way most often the story does not turn out the way it started. Romance, elopement and the interaction of people from the era. It will delight you and some have great humor added.

My copy of Pistols for Two was bought used back in the mid-seventies, and disintegrated after I read and reread it while suffering the throes of morning sickness back in 1981. I reread it so many times that when the yellowed paperback fell entirely to pieces, I didn't replace it, thus I hadn't reread the stories in over thirty years.

So when this new edition, with three added stories, turned up on NetGalley, I grabbed it. And I could immediately see why I reread it so much while so sick: the stories go down easily, pleasantly, and lightly. None of them are memorable in either plot or prose, but Heyer's delightful wit sparkles in the dialogue as her well-born heroes and heroines go about the business of falling instantly in love. There is one that is not very romantic, but more of a mystery, and there are several that functioned as templates for later novels.

Pretty much all the stories involve travel, most have to do with runaways. In Heyer's Regency, the earls and dukes and marquises are always handsome and athletic, expert shots, whips, and fencers, and the heroines sweet, innocent, and teenaged, with big, trusting, sparkling, or fulminating eyes.

You know what you are getting with these stories, and Heyer always delivers. Just the ticket for the bedside table when one needs a pleasant and untaxing read.

Although I've known Heyer's name for years, I only started reading her work in the last few months. So far, I have loved it all, and Snowdrift and Other Stories is no exception. That said, I think I do prefer her longer works, where she has more time to develop plot and character. These short stories are perfectly enjoyable; however, they didn't grip me as much as her novels. Nonetheless, they make delightful evening reading, and you can dip into a story each night if you are short on time. If you are an established Heyer fan, you'll love these little tales, but if you are new to Heyer's work, I would recommend trying one of the novels first and then coming back to these shorts. Overall, a wonderful Regency-era read.

Georgette Heyer is an absolute favorite, and this a a wonderful collection of Regency short stories that just hit the spot. Nice that this collection is being reissued with a new story, and yes Ms Heyer is still popular today.

I've been a fan of Heyer's Regency romances and adventures for a while now, so when I saw this was 'Read Now' on Netgalley, I confess I pounced. It's actually the collection Pistols for Two (which I hadn't read yet) but with three extra stories from early in Heyer's career.

While Heyer's short stories aren't precisely what I like in a short story -- something with a twist, something maybe a little unpredictable, something packed into as small a space as possible -- they're fun little stories, very much like her longer works but compressed. The same types of hero and heroine, the same sorts of love scene and the same sort of happy ending abound, along with Heyer's usual wit. If you enjoy the banter between her characters and the sparkle of her writing, all of that is in evidence here. If I had to call the collection anything, I might call it Miniatures!

If you don't love Heyer's work, well, this won't be for you. It's very much typical of her, and she doesn't have the space to make her heroes and heroines distinctive. And if you've never tried Heyer, well, I'd start with The Talisman Ring instead, if I were you.

I've heard wonderful things about Georgette Heyer, so I leapt at this opportunity to see what the fuss was about, but unfortunately, this just isn't my style of historical romance. I apologize for any inconvenience.

Originally published as Pistols for two, Snowdrift and other stories contains three brand new stories that previously haven’t been in a collection. These three stories, Pursuit, Runaway match and Incident on the Bath Road, make a delightful addition for readers who love the work of Georgette Heyer.
All the stories felt very familiar to me and indeed many could be described as precursors to the full length novels. I have been a fan of the author since the very first time I read a book by her when I was a teen. She is an author that I come back to repeatedly whenever I need a feel-good read because her witty dialogue, sparkling characters and charming atmosphere always lift my spirits.
In this collection, I was happy to be re-united with Pistols for two as Heyer is so able to convey the jealousies and strong friendship of the youths who had suddenly found that the annoying little playmate from their childhood had grown into a beauty. Pursuit, one of the new stories, also was a hit with me, as I enjoyed the romance between the older couple, the Earl of Shane and Mary Fairfax, the governess and have always had a soft spot for the young woman who falls in love with a military man.
I particularly enjoyed the foreword by Heyer's official biographer, Jennifer Kloester, as she describes the importance of the women’s magazines as places for authors to be published.
Heyer brings to life all the romance of a bygone era and her wonderful characters will linger in the memory. She is truly the queen of the Regency romance.

I am a huge Georgette Heyer fan and so it’s a pleasure to see this release of her short stories. Originally, this was called Pistols for Two, but with the addition of three new stories, the collection has been given a new name. For Heyer fans everything you loved about her writing is still there.

Rereading these stories, I was struck by her vivid characterizations that come through despite the short story format. Her heroines are plucky, charming, and honest; her heroes are suave (usually) and attracted to the forthright sincerity of the heroines.

I prefer her novels where she had more space to develop her characters and plot, but this still was still a fun return to the purity of Heyer’s writing that first attracted fans almost a century ago.

I was give a free ARC of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
