The details and descriptions between Prince Ryzyn and Gem. Parker Sinclair does a good job leading up to the climax of the story. I was literally at the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next. I could see clearly the buildings that were being described and felt like I was experiencing everything in the story.

Received from NetGalley.

Such a beautiful book. The story is just so sweet and lovely. I really like that it is a standalone book.

It is high fantasy book about Gem who travels with her family and performs, and the also steal on the side. One night she steals mysterious Heath and is almost captured, only to be rescued by the prince Ryzyn. There are somehow connected since then, even though they don't see each other for many years.

After that night Gem runs away from her family and that lifestyle and becomes a guard. Ryzyn learns how to wield the hearth. But they have to join forces if they want to save the land from evil.

The setting is really interesting world, full of magic. I really like the writing.

Stuff I didn't like: the cover and that the story was slow at times. Other wise, really great and interesting book.

3.5/5

This book could have been a thousand times better, but its writing is confusing, suddenly jumping to events that don’t really connect, having its narrative guided by the main characters – Gem and Raysen – thoughts’ caused the story to not be fluid. But the plot, the idea with which the story was built, is incredible.

It’s so full of magic, adventure, magical beings, and the “romance” between the MCs is something – in my opinion – comical. Not because it’s unfounded or anything, but because it doesn’t have a past beyond “I saw you twice, therefore my heart is yours” – this is a small hint. But anyway, it took me two days to read this book, but the story seemed to just begin and end so suddenly.

Want to know why? It wasn’t constructed that well, and as I said before, it isn’t fluid. It’s abrupt, bumpy, a there are “time lapses”, so to say, in which the character’s life could have been explained. But it just jumps from when they were kids to when they were adults, and then they have to save the lives of the kingdom while trying to figure out how to deal with their hearts.

Confusing as hell, but so worth reading. And I mean it. Even if the story isn’t that well-formed, if you have a bit of patience it will all make sense at the end, and you will end up liking it.

I unfortunately don’t know if there are any books that I can say this is similar to, but I found that there are some “Graceling”, “The Novice” by Taran Matharu aspects to it, a bit of “His Dark Materials” by Philip Pullman (actually I think a little more than a bit, but I may be wrong). I recommend it, not much, but I do.
