This was such an uplifting story. I felt connected to the author as I too have gone thru similar situations and it gave me hope to come out on top.

When I started reading The Con Man's Daughter: A Story of Lies, Desperation, and Finding God, I wasn't sure what I was getting into. Never did I expect Candice Curry to pierce my heart with humor, sadness, and brutal honesty. Reading this book is a roller coaster ride of emotions that you don't want to get off. Highly recommend

I admire Candice’s courages to open her painful past in such details and honest way. Though I didn’t have the same childhood experiences as Candice had, I can related to her feelings and pain. Because we all do have the same needs, a father’s love. No matter how much we hate our father, or how bad our father is, deep inside we are still craving for his love and attention.

I was so captivated by this book and finished it in just 2 days. I read it anywhere or anytime I can. I just can’t stop to put this down.
This is a must read book, lightweight yet it carries such a deep meaning. A real proof that if you give your story to God, no matter how broken it is, He will always turn it to happy ending.

Thank you Netgalley for this book.

This was a heartbreaking book to read in many ways. But it was also one of the most hope-filled books I’ve read in a long while. Page after page of a little girl longing for her daddy to do the right thing, to protect and cherish her, to be the father that every little girl wants – only to be disappointed page after page. This is the journey of that little girl as she comes to understand how her father’s manipulative and illegal activities put her in danger repeatedly (constantly) in her young life. It details how she was able to overcome such a difficult background and eventually give her life to her Heavenly Father, finally finding the protection and love she had been seeking her whole life, in spite of shocking wounds from her earthly father.

The book discusses some adult themes (illegal drug use, repeated thievery, child endangerment and abandonment, infidelity, and divorce among others), so it’s not for sensitive or impressionable readers. However, each episode is described with sensitivity and without sensationalism. Even though it brought me to tears many times, I rejoiced to read of the author’s successes in life, understanding that God had His hand on her the whole time, never abandoning her as her earthly father had. Difficult, but so worth reading.

I gratefully received this book as an eARC from the author, publisher, and NetGalley in exchange for my unbiased review.

The Con Man's Daughter

A Story of Lies, Desperation, and Finding God

I am reviewing The Con Man's Daughter through Baker Books and Netgalley:

When Candice Curry was a little girl, she found herself sticking her hands in her Dad's pockets so she wouldn't get lost in large crowds. At the time she couldn't know the things she was learning from him. She would later learn they lived a Con Man's lifestyle. Living in stolen houses, driving stolen cars, using borrowed credit cards.

By the time she is thirteen Candice comes to realize her Dad is not like other Dad's. Growing up she considered her Dad the cool Dad.

She talks about her family falling apart piece by piece. She talks about the summer their Mother and Father separated then moved back in together. By the time she was a senior Candice Mother has a boyfriend, one that shows her that she is loved.

After finishing high school she attended College in a nearby city. She had hopes of majoring in criminal justice, and becoming a judge a way of rebelling against her criminal Father, but soon she finds the pressure to be to much and drops out of her classes.

On March 20, 2000 Candice gives birth to a daughter, her and her then husband determined to do their best for the child. At the same time of their daughters birth they were divorced but Candice was determined that her daughters father would be a part of her life.

In Summer of 2010 Candice's triplets are diagnosed with Autism.

When Candice was twenty her Father remarried.

The Con Man's Daughter is the story of loss, of sin, but it is also the story of redemption and grace.

I give The Con Man's Daughter five out of five stars.

Happy Reading.

This is a very honest book about the conflicting feelings of a daughter towards her father and the unsatiable desire of love and approval.
Not all fathers are as inapt as her father was, but ultimately only our father in heaven can love us the way we really need it.
This autobiography shows how God's love can change life and make forgiveness possible.

Our God is so good! He longs to answer us if only we would call on Him. Mrs. Curry’s story is a beautiful witness to that truth. She went through so much, so many people hurt her, so many tragedies happened… How could she ever trust anyone? Can she love? Will she ever be loved?
There are several quotes from this book that I would like to share but ripped from their setting they would certainly lose some of their power. They aren’t especially profound, or anything that hasn’t been said many times before. But after you read her story, and then see those truths expressed in her life, they will seem to have a new power and poignancy.
Her story is simple and raw. A childhood of neglect causes tragedy after tragedy throughout her early married life. She is desperate for love and looking in all the wrong places. Then she finds she can’t go it alone. Finally, she turns it all over to God. He shows her his love and gently shows her that she too needs his forgiveness. It’s amazing, encouraging, and a blessing. It’s the story of a life made over after God’s pattern.
It’s a heartbreaking read though. People did absolutely terrible things to her. It’s rough and for an older audience (at least older teens), but she was very delicate about everything. I can’t overemphasize how grateful I am for that. Thank you, Mrs. Curry, for not dwelling on the details of the sin, but on God’s mercy and forgiveness. Thank you for your delicacy.
I received this book as a free ARC from NetGalley and Baker Publishing. No review was required, but it was my pleasure to write it. Please let me recommend this book to you. It will be worth your time reading it.
