This is such a cute story. When Sophie's parents bring home a baby brother instead of a sister, she is not happy. She tries to pretend he is a sister by putting in pigtails and dressing him in her doll's clothes, but after awhile, that no longer works. When she tries to trade him for a sister, she finds out that he is really a pretty good sibling after all. This is a great book to read with kids who are waiting for a new sibling or one that has a new sibling not of the sex they preferred. I love that Sophie learns that her brother's temperament and personality are what is important and that they can still have lots of fun together. The illustrations are great. They are cute, colourful and show great emotions. A good book for a family library.

The book ended strangely and abruptly and there were errors with the text placement on the Kindle version.

This is an especially good book for preschoolers who are dealing with the life experiences of having a new baby join the family. In the But I Wanted a Baby Sister Sophie wanted a sister but had to deal with having a baby brother. As the story progresses she realizes baby sisters can be annoying too and finds the joy in having a brother. One of the things that attracted me to this book was the illustrations. They are very suitable for reading aloud to one child or a classroom.

Sophie has a little brother but she wanted a little sister. She has the idea to dress him up in her girl doll clothes and have him pretend that he is a little sister. He grows out of the doll clothes and her mother cuts his hair short. Sophie goes to the store to return him for a sister. The saleswoman tells her that they don't exchange brothers for sisters. Three older siblings try to trade their little sisters for Sophie's little brother. Sophie doesn't accept each time because her little brother doesn't cry all day, break her necklaces or eat her drawings. Sophie no longer wants a little sister because she has the sweetest little brother in the whole world.
This is the second picture book that I have read by Pauline Out and I have to say that I really like her writing style. I really enjoyed the illustrations in this book. I like how this book can be used as a tool by parents to prepare their children to having a little brother. Sophie learns that she loves her little brother and would not replace him with anyone. I recommend this book to all families with a small child and a baby on the way.

5/5 ⭐

This is a lovely wee kids book with a great message about acceptance bubbling beneath the joyful drawings and simple story. Sophie wants a little sister, but ends up with a little brother. After trying to pretend he's a girl for a while, she tries to exchange him for a baby girl, only to discover something interesting along the way. It's a good story with nice illustrations, a great read-aloud for the young ones that seems very re-readable, and could easily become a favorite with your kids.

This is a really fun book about a little girl who wants a new baby sister but ends up with a new baby brother. When she realizes that she can't send her brother back she decides that she can pretend that she is a sister. She gives her brother pigtails and dresses her like a girl.

Adorable and fun! The perfect book for a (temporarily-disappointed) older (pre-K-ish) sibling. What's big sister to do when pig tails and dresses won't work with her new baby brother? But after hearing about her friends' finicky baby sisters, Big Sister learns to love and appreciate her new liitle brother just as he is.

I absolutely loved the idea, the illustrations, and the cute way this story conveys the message of accepting her brother instead of a sister.
