Tim and Susannah met while in mortician school and married shortly after in the first installment of the Dark Hobby Trilogy, The Quiet Type by bestselling author Summer Prescott. Susannah grew up in a home where she was ignored by her mother and harassed by a cruel father. She was bullied at school because of her weight and took revenge into her own hands before meeting Tim, who was awkward and unsociable, and who preferred working with the dead rather than live people. Susannah is a master chef with little tolerance for co-workers who don’t have her skills. Tim has no idea that his wife has a dark hobby. While Tim takes care of the mortuary duties and Susannah cooks for a high-end restaurant in their small town, there are several suspicious deaths, and law enforcement, sure Tim is behind it, sets out to prove their theories.

This novel is a bit bizarre, and leans toward horror; it’s a good thriller and will keep readers on the edges of their seats because it is not only suspenseful, but the scenarios are so unexpected and different, readers will want to keep reading to see what could possibly happen next. The characters are very well developed, and readers will have some empathy for the backgrounds of the main characters and be thankful that their lives are different. It’s a good thing Susannah and Tim aren’t real people, and that most of us don’t know anyone who is like them.

All told, this novel is perfect for those who want something really different and fascinating.

Not my thing, gave up about halfway through. Well written though, just not my cup of tea. Interesting characters, creepy and gross at times. Thanks to Netgalley for an advance copy.

I must be honest...I did not finish this book. At 50%, I was so appalled by the amateurish writing that I gave up.

The Quiet Type starts out as a pretty interesting read. The set up was nice, a young girl with a difficult home life finding a way to take back some of the power she felt had been stolen from her at home and school. I wish we could have gotten more details about what happened to the bouncy bully, but that seems to be a theme with this story.
I know I mostly do romance reviews here because I am primarily a romance writer but a love and a hobby of mine is true crime. So when NetGalley offered me the chance to review Summer Prescott’s latest, I read the blurb and I was excited to dig in and get started. A mortician and a bloodthirsty serial killer meet…and at some point become husband and wife. It all just kind of happens but it sets the stage for the rest of the story in Pellman, MN.
I’m going to start with Timothy because—oh goodness—poor sweet Timothy was as introverted as they came. Sure he has a fascination with death that some—not me, mind you but some—might find macabre but it all came from a place of learning. And a painful experience in his past. I loved this guy. I felt for him and I just wanted to wrap him in my arms and hold him close because holy cow, the man was in over his head.
Susannah was…an interesting character. She was neglected, abused and bullied her whole life. At home and at school so there was no escape for her pain. Or her rage, and it was that rage that Summer Prescott captured so perfectly in The Quiet Type. I admired this in Susannah, her ability to control the rage, to recognize when it needed to be unleashed. Before you get all worried, I admit to a slight serial killer fascination which is why this story intrigued me from the start. Together they made an odd yet complementary pair that compelled me to flip the page as the story progressed.
Then the story got good. I mean like really good with a capital ‘G’. Summer Prescott set a sedate pace with this book for the most part but about 75 to 80% through it just picks up and the entire time my heart is pacing through the spider and the fly game between Susannah and one of her victims. It’s intense and fun, fast-paced and slightly gruesome but utterly entertaining. By the time I reached the final page it was like a never-ending thrill ride had, unfortunately, come to an end and you just know you’ll be talking about that ride for a good long while.

I couldn't bring myself to put this book down. It was twisted on an epic level, and I loved the way it pulled me in so many conflicting directions.

While knowing what needed to happen from a moral standpoint, I found myself immersed in the head of the villain and wanting, illogically for her to succeed. Not only that, but so many other minor villains make themselves into a nusciance and sent me on an emotional ride. Overall, a solidly decent read.

From the very start this book had a creepy vibe to it. I honestly borrowed it because it wasn't in my "comfort zone" of books...and it didn't disappoint. Great read, intense, and I only once made the mistake of reading it at night...after that it was daytime reading only.

The quiet type by summer Prescott.
Tim and Susannah have ordinary lives on the surface, he’s a mortician for whom death is a serious business, and she’s a chef who really knows her way around a knife, but if the neighbors in their small Midwestern town knew of her dark hobby, they’d run for the hills.Raised by an apathetic mother and a cruel father, Susannah was bullied and pushed to her breaking point long before she met mild-mannered Tim, and has learned to channel her murderous impulses into a strange form of art, which keeps her clueless husband safe…for now.As strange events occur, and Susannah’s eccentric behavior becomes more dynamic, Tim starts to wonder about his wife. Will he be too perceptive for his own good?
This was a fantastic read with brilliant characters. I was gripped and wanted to know what suzzanah would do next. Couldn't put it down. I didn't expect that. 5*. Netgalley and bookbuzz.net.

Still waters run deep, and none deeper than Susannah. Summer Prescott twists together two most unusual characters, and follows their life together as one tries to make his way in the world as an extreme introvert fascinated with the dead, and the other descends into the madness of a serial killer. How convenient for Susannah that her husband easily fits the stereotype of a sadistic murderer as she tears through a small town trying to sate her need for blood. With unlikely and fragile allies forged along the way, Tim must not fall victim to either the alleged crimes or his own deranged wife, as he tries desperately to preserve his need for solitude.

And just when you think it's over, Prescott delivers the twist that leaves you hoping for a sequel.

After all, it's always the quiet ones...

Ok to start off I loved the creepy feel of the cover, and from the description of the book I was very curious to read this book. I will say that from the beginning I really liked the raw unfiltered, horror of this book it's blunt and even a bit sick. But if u can stomach that kind of book than this book is definitely for you. I however started getting a bit bored with all the gore by half way through the book. I think that if the author would have dosed out the portions of Gore then each time u read a part about a killing or something just the same you would find it more thrilling instead of it becoming a bit overkill pun very intended. This wasn't a bad book but it just wasn't a great book I had hoped to read.

The Quiet Type is a story about a young girl who was verbally abused by her father for being overweight. After years of this verbal abuse, Susannah decides enough is enough and kills her father by poisoning him. Susannah was so enthralled by the dying process she decides to continue killing.
This book is a thriller like you have never read.
Author Chelsea Cain writes about a female serial killer and when I saw another author decided to write about the same I had to read it. Susannah is as twisted as they come and will have you cringing and wanting to cover your eyes to stop the images that will pop into your head.
The secondary characters are great and really help support the story line.
You may just start liking a character and Susannah may decide it's their time to die.
This is a must read!

This quirky novel, full of macabre humor and grisly details, is laugh-out-loud funny. It's a fun romp through a bizarre yet strangely familiar world. It's difficult to describe. Terrible things are said and done, but I found myself laughing out loud at them. Even though it's full of blood and gore, it's oddly lighthearted. I caught myself smiling a lot reading this.

Susannah Guntzelman is a very strange girl. Her father hates her and torments her cruelly. He is sadistic and controlling. She can't wait to leave home. She dislikes people and just wants to be left alone to get through high school. In spite of wishing to be invisible, she reacts vigorously, meting out revenge, when she feels she's been wronged.

She meets an equally introverted and unusual person, Timothy Eckels, when they are assigned to be lab partners. They are surprised and pleased to find they both enjoy cutting up cadavers and animals. She is surprised to find someone she can tolerate, even relate to, and eventually they marry.
He becomes a mortician, and she becomes a chef. Both of them continue with their enjoyment of knives and cutting flesh in these professions. However, she develops an additional secret "heinous hobby" that shocks and frightens him when he discovers it.
Each of the characters is well defined and delightful, even the villainous ones. The plot moves along at just the right pace, and the authors tongue-in-cheek humor permeates everything. A remarkably cheerful bloodfest. You won't be disappointed.
Highly recommended.

Note: I received an eARC from the publisher in efforts an honest review.

WOW! This book completely blew me away. I really liked how creepy she made Susannah come off to the reader. And Tim's timidness really came through as well. I could've done without such an annoying Sheriff but that's just my opinion. Overall, I gave this a 4.25! CREEPY AS F***!, Quite explicit at times with the GORE, but I live for that! Insanely suspenseful...great character building I def recommend it!

I really enjoyed this book, when I wasn't feeling totally grossed out! I honestly thought Tim was going to freak me out more than Susannah, but I actually liked Tim alot. This story ramps up the suspense and intensity with each chapter and I like the way the story ended. Book 2? I highly recommend this captivating thriller!
