a nice book with a great time setting, wonderful characters and overall entertaining and interesting story.
If you are interested in the currently very popular hamilton this is a nice book to pick up i would guess.
i enjoyed it and would recommend it just for the historical setting alone.

A love story during the time of the framing of the US, what a good setting for this book. The book is helped by the massive popularity of the musical, but it is actually a good book in its own right as well. I had an ejoyable read with it and I think most people would.

I liked the premise of this book a lot. I wanted to like this book a lot. But I found the writing super hard to follow. The dual points of view was a great thought, but it made the narrative jarring and difficult to track. While I could tell the author wanted to take a stronger, more feminist view of Eliza (which did shine through at certain points), I found the writing in Eliza's sections to be weaker. The book was difficult to work through, but I was able to finish. If you're looking for a light escapist read, this is awesome—but leave your love for HAMILTON the Musical at the door.

I have always loved History so jumped at the chance to read "The Hamilton Affair" which is a love story about Alexander Hamilton and Elizabeth Schuyler though areas are fictionalized (of course). I don't usually read love stories but made an exception for this one (considering the main characters) and am glad I did.

The novel was a quick and delightful read. I would defiantly buy it for a Hamilton enthusiast.

Provided historical information in a time period crucial to our nation. I liked the story development from both characters individually until it converged.

First line: The boy frowned, pressed a folded handkerchief to his nose, and scanned the crowd for the third time.

Summary: Alexander Hamilton, a Revolutionary War hero and the first Secretary of the Treasury, was born in the Caribbean and moved to the American Colonies to attend college. He was not wealthy but he was brave and smart. Eliza Schuyler, a debutante and daughter of a famous general, is helping the war effort by assisting with the wounded at Valley Forge. When these two young people meet a love story begins. But the story still has its ups and downs even after the war is over.

Highlights: I knew basically nothing about Alexander Hamilton other than what I learned in my history classes, which wasn’t much. I had recently read a book about him but it stopped shortly after his marriage to Eliza. When I found out about the affair he had with Maria Reynolds I was completely shocked. I loved the author’s writing style and the flow of the story. I was completely engrossed in this story and I learned a lot. The pacing is really well done. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to read more about the man who has become a pop culture phenomenon.

Lowlights: The political intrigue and problems with fellow founding fathers was a little confusing to me. It may all fall on my lack of detailed knowledge of the founding of the United States and all the problems that went along with it. I never realized that there was so much opposition to the changes and that they believed that Hamilton was interested in being King even though he fought so hard to end the rule of England over the colonies. Some of the pieces with the animosity with the fellow politicians was a little too much but it was building up to what led to the duel with Aaron Burr.

FYI: Great history lesson. Get the information that you missed in high school history.

It seems as though thanks to Lin-Manuel Miranda, the entire world now knows who Alexander Hamilton is. Even those who haven’t seen the show and have only been absorbing Hamilton through the great pop culture river that runs through life, have an idea of who and what he was about. This is another writer trying to explain the times and the lives of Alexander and Eliza Hamilton. I really enjoyed the fact that there was more focus of Elizabeth Schuyler before Hamilton arrived on the scene included in this book as I find that even with a feminist writer like Miranda, the women can end up as plot devices and advancers of the storyline rather than their own beings. I am not disparaging “Hamilton” by no means, it’s a musical about him. This story, ”The Hamilton Affair,” was more about the Hamiltons, their lives and loves.
As much as I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to other historical fiction readers interested in the Revolutionary War, there is so much more I want to know. I want to know more about the Schuylers, about the sisters and their lives. This story gave me a taste for their lives and I almost wish the writer had chosen to stick with them. I cannot begrudge author Elizabeth Cobbs for focusing on the relationships of Alexander Hamilton, they were more noted and written about historically. Now I have to go find more to sate my need for Revolutionary War historical fiction, a genre I wasn’t sure I would ever enjoy; but thanks to Elizabeth Cobbs I am itching for more.

I am torn on how to rate this book; it had moments of pure joy - I loved those parts. It was a joy to read the story and see the back life of both Eliza Schuyler Hamilton and Alexander Hamilton [most of which was deeply entertaining and informational] and how they got together. Then there are the moments of pure dullness - where what was being written was being read like a very boring text book and I was not engaged at all; not even remotely. In fact, there were moments where I was so bored that I could barely read what was written. LOTS of facts [which are almost always a good thing] which became very dry very quickly.

So, you see the dilemma I am in.

Ultimately, I am rating this at four stars - the writing, when it was good, was amazing. To be fair, even the boring parts were well-written, just way too much of it. And I would recommend this to people, with the disclaimer that there will be parts that will tough to get through.

This is an interesting story; some of which I knew and much of which I did not know. It was interesting to learn about Mr. Hamilton and the struggles he faced after the war and his beloved wife who stood by his side, even in the midst of rumor and infidelity. And loved him always.

I have always been a history lover. Give me a factual, scholarly, historical tome or a historical fictional story of a time, place or person and I can sit and disappear into that time or place for hours.
Due to the Broadway musical “Hamilton” many people are being introduced or reintroduced to one of the brilliant founding architects of our republic and THE HAMILTON AFFAIR by Elizabeth Cobbs is an enjoyable historical fiction overview of Alexander and Elizabeth Hamilton’s lives and their love.
The beginning of the book alternates between Alexander’s harsh life on St. Croix as a boy. He and his brother were declared bastards as they were born into a second marriage by his mother. He refused to let anything stop his ambitions and arrived in the colonies to educate and better himself after his mother’s death. In the alternate chapters we get to meet Elizabeth “Eliza” Schuyler and her privileged family of wealth. From her life on the family farm and love of animals to her very open and honest opinions.
When the two come together in marriage, the book follows the couple through the remainder of the Revolutionary War and the author does an informative, yet entertaining, job of describing the establishment of our federal government with all of Hamilton’s achievements and also all of the political intrigue and mud-slinging. This is balanced well by the author’s descriptions of the Hamilton home life, children, extended family and friends. Hamilton’s affair that almost destroyed his marriage and most definitely put a stop to his further political ambitions is also covered.
I really enjoyed this book. It is well written and covered Alexander and Elisabeth’s lives in an easy to read historical fiction format.

My niece was really interested in this book! She said it was very interesting and enjoyable. She felt the author did a good job at researching about Hamilton and Eliza. She liked the history aspect and the love affair that went on.

As fan of the Hamilton play, I was happy that there was book on Alexander Hamilton and Elizabeth Schuyler. The writing is excellent. However, I didn't feel for the characters. The romance between Alexander and Elizabeth seemed like instant love and didn't seem believable. I also did like the switching views between Alexander and Elizabeth. Still, I recommend this for fans of the play, and it makes me want to learn more about this famous couple.

I really enjoyed this book. The descriptions are vivid but not overbearing, and the reader feels like they're right there, seeing, hearing, and experiencing everything as it happens.

Huge fan of Hamilton ( they play not the man) and this really opened my eyes to the "affair". God bless Eliza is all I can say

The Hamilton Affair was an enjoyable book that tells of the lives of Alexander Hamilton and his wife, Eliza. It was a very enjoyable read that turned fact into a fascinating historical fiction well!

I received this ARC from netgalley.com in exchange for a review.

This book is a fictionalized story about the real relationship between Alexander Hamilton and Elizabeth Schuyler. The couple's story is interesting enough, but I got bogged down as the flow of the story became less 'fictional' and more chronological.

I wanted to adore this book. Instead I merely liked it. Fans of both the Chernow biography and the musical (like myself!) will appreciate this novelization of Hamilton's life. It's a fun read!

This story covers the life of Alexander Hamilton and his part in the revolutionary war. Some of his wife Elizabeth Schuyler's life and then their life together. Except for a few exceptions it covers the real people around the Hamilton family and many of the historical happenings of the time. Alexander Hamilton was a person who tried to be trust worthy and truthful. His one time of weakness had an effect on his political as well as his personal life. The story flows so well and very descriptive.
