This is the final book in the Frances Bacon Mystery series. This last in series has delivered all the intrigue, mystery and mayhem of each of the earlier books. I am sorry to see this series end as its definitely one of my favorite mystery series. The author has a masterful writing style that is pleasing to the reader.

This is the first of the 'Francis Bacon' mysteries that I've read. I wasn't sure what to expect, and it took me a couple of pages to figure out the narrator, his unique voice, and the setting. After that, I enjoyed almost every minute!

Smart, sassy, slightly scandalous Francis lives an unconventional life during a conventional era undergoing rapid and challenging changes. He has a wide array of friends, acquaintances, and even enemies from various levels of society. He's had to leave his beloved London and successful design studio behind to come to the aid of his beloved cousin Penelope--who's at a country house party with the horsey set, and her decidedly dodgy new fiance. It's not bad enough that Francis has to deal with the dust and dirt of the country, there's soon a bloody, battered body as well. But he cajoles, charms, and sometimes even cheats his way through a confusing web of clues, spies, friends, lovers, and sometimes-shady relatives to try and solve the mystery. He doesn't always get the credit he deserves, and he doesn't always know who to trust, but somewhere under his dandy bravado exterior, he's got a quick brain, and a heart of gold. I'll definitely read the next one.

Janice Law writes an amusing English country house mystery set in the lead-up to World War II. We have a collection of fascist sympathizers, spies, and blackmailed homosexuals. This is the latest in the “Francis Bacon” series.

I found this rather dry. It just could not grab by attention, even though I usually like mysteries set in Britain.
I see the author has written several books so I guess it just wasn't my cup of tea.

While the life of the London demimonde is not for everyone, this well plotted mystery series that features a controversial artist, a real life figure with entre to the artistic salons and night life of Europe. Despite a dissipated lifestyle, Bacon, as depicted by Law, is an engaging and intelligent detective. This mystery will not disappoint her fans.
