The Unorthodox Dr. Draper and Other Stories was a wonderful collection of short stories. Some of these stories and dark and almost demented while other make you laugh out loud and the surprise of not knowing what was coming next made this one of my favorites of the year.

This collection is incredible. I dig the cover. I dig the stories. I dig it all. Thoroughly disturbing in its setup, making it unputdownable. I read this collection in one gulp. I tried reading in portions, but the stories kept getting better as I read along. I stopped one story and immediately had to start the next one, only pausing when life got in the way. I love a good collection that has the stories in a strong order. There wasn't a weak story in the collection. I thought the stories transitioned well. In fact, the author saved the best for last.

The collection is tongue-in-cheek. It has a unique take on H.P. Lovecraft's mythos. Within these pages are nine short stories and one beautiful poem. I'm a sucker for poetry. These psychological horror stories are filled with twists and humor.

With all short story collections, I have my favorites, and I would like to share them with you now.

Penguins of the Apocalypse
The Tenth Muse
The Indelible Dark
Usurped
The Unorthodox Dr. Draper

Some of these stories were posted elsewhere prior to the release of this collection. I have never read anything by this author before, but I'm going to check out his other work. This isn't the author's first collection either.

These stories take you where you list expect them to. William Browning Spencer delves into depression, loss, and alcoholism. The tales are dark and weirdly satisfying.

Highly Recommend!

Fantastic collection of short stories, very enjoyable! A weird and wonderful collection of Lovecraft Mythos stories, flavored with surrealistic touches of humor that makes them bizarrely unique.

Truthfully, I think Spencer is a talented writer. His writing style is poetic without being too much so, offering a stylistic picture of the horror/humor stories he writes. The tales in The Unorthodox Dr. Draper and Other Stories were often cerebral, with good twists and an element of psychological horror that will appeal the most die-hard Lovecraft fan. It, however, just wasn’t for me.

Review of THE UNORTHODOX DR. DRAPER AND OTHER STORIES
by William Browning Spencer

Irony is the key here, irony and Lovecraft. Think those two themes don't work well together? Try this collection of stories (and a delightful Lovecraftian poem). These aren't usually laugh-out-loud humour, but they are humorous, and quite often, poetically just. I found the Lovecraft touches awesome. Mr. Spencer definitely has a unique view of the Lovecraftian Mythos and of the world which we (most of us) inhabit.
