This book failed to deliver a suspenseful read. It was disappointing and very wordy. I did not like any of the characters and saw no need for the pages that told us about the mother, Liz.

Little Broken Things is truly about big broken things as the novel focuses on many a dark (and very large problems).
Quin has moved home to a small lake town with a new husband. Before she truly has time to settle in, her sister Nora shows up with a child and asks Quin to watch her but to keep the child a secret. Nora promises to come back for the child leaving her sister in confusion and worry. Who is this child and why is she with here?
The only thing that propels the reader forward is the mystery. Quin isn't that interesting and her mother's point of view seem superfluous. Once you become accustomed to the chapter's point of view, mysterious first person is thrown in adding to the confusion of an already cluttered book.
But I was glad to see the idea of abuse, molestation and rape talked about head on even though the twist is foreseeable with in the first third of the book. The author shed some light on the idea for the book; her own adoption and how it was living with the child. As someone who work with orphans these small portions of the book were the gems. Unfortunately, the book spent more time on layer more and more mess on the life of the characters and less time dealing with the child in question.
Little Broken Things is an easy read about messy topics. The novel jump starts but then falters so I give it three stars.

I was hooked immediately, needing to keep reading to piece together the answers. I felt the emotions that Quinn, Nora, and Liz Sanford felt as they dealt with the stresses and difficulties of protecting a little girl, who Quinn and Liz know nothing about, but will shake up their world as they know it!

Heading off to add other books by Nicole Baart to my reading list!

I liked how this was written and it totally pulled me in for a less than 24 hour read on vacation. I would read more from this author.

This book grabs your attention right from the start and doesn't let go until the last page.
It's a story of three women, a mother and her two grown daughters who live very emotionally detached from each other.
They find love and togetherness when they are forced to share a fearsome difficulty.
The action moves along briskly with plenty of suspense and uncertainty.
Nevertheless the three spend a great amount of time in private introspection, reflecting on the choices of their past life, and regretting some of these choices.
Ultimately they come to realize that no matter how broken things become, life does go on.
Excellent novel! Well written!

Thank you to Atria Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, and NetGalley for sending me this book in exchange for an honest review.

Nicole Baart fans now have something new to dig into. Little Broken Things is the suspenseful story of a Minnesota family in a wealthy lakeside community and their carefully concealed secrets that come to light with the arrival of a mysterious little girl simply introduced as Lucy. It is an entertaining novel that may be a bit formulaic but is nevertheless un-put-down-able.

Baart cuts back and forth among three main characters, continuously moving the narrative forward with clues about the little girl’s identity and the terrible circumstances that led to her being left on a doorstep in Key Lake, Minnesota.

The impossibly sweet and beautiful Quinn Cruz who is married to a talented and ruggedly handsome artist. Her sister, Nora, for whom fierce loyalty and independence are main character traits. Their mother, Liz, recently widowed and slowly discovering authenticity after years of acting. Each woman narrates in alternating chapters. The men remain two-dimensional: self-centered at best and pure evil at worst.

Baart is skilled and controlled. Some of her passages are downright stunning, like this one: “Carnelian and tangerine, indigo and pink stirred so soft it looked like the raspberry sorbet she had loved as a girl.” Her book doesn’t shock like Gone Girls or sparkle like Big Little Lies but the plot is strong and the characters are likeable and the setting is interesting, making it the perfect Thanksgiving holiday read.

Best paired with a tin of dark chocolate “laced with flakes of chili pepper.”

WOW! Little Broken Things is a great suspense story that will reel you in and not let you go. There is so much happening in this book. Things you will never believe would happen. There is love, hate, fear, patience and at times rage.
The story goes back and forth from one character in one chapter to another character to the next chapter.
I read other reviews on this book before I read it and decided I needed to read it because the other reviews were all about how great this book is. And I have to say they were completely correct.
It's one of those stories where you will love a character then think nope......she/he is a jerk.......only to feel differently again by the end. This is a MUST read!

Very well written suspense novel.

The truth that can mend little broken things lies in the paternity of six year old Everlee Barnes.

The Sandford family; Liz, Nora, Quinn, JJ & Jack are the perfect Key Lake family - or are they?

When Nora drops a child at Quinn's door then takes off without an explanation, Quinn and her husband Walker find themselves protecting Lucy from a danger they can't identify but know exists. Meanwhile Nora is desperate to find Tiffany so that they can carry out their plan to disappear to start a new life with a clean slate.

Lovey ending that wraps up the various story lines .

This book is a MUST READ for those who enjoy a good mystery with family drama! Nicole Baart has a true winner with this novel! The characters have many layers that are uncovered the more one reads. There is Quinn, a daughter, wife, and sister, who is questioning her marriage. Nora is the other sister who is wrapped up in protecting her best friend's daughter from the friend's sleazy husband. Nora drops the daughter into Quinn's lap and disappears. Then there is Liz, Nora and Quinn's mother. At first glance, she appears to be meddlesome and a busybody, but readers will grow to love her as the layers of her personality are peeled away. I felt like I knew these characters. They were realistic and well-developed. The story unfolds perfectly. It is fast-paced, and I could not put this book down! Just when you think you know the answers to the family's drama, you realize there is more involved than what meets the eye. I highly recommend this book!

Little Broken Things by Nicole Baart was a quick read thanks to the thread of mystery that runs throughout this book. Beautifully written and sympathetic characters, this novel is full of family secrets. I really enjoyed it and think you will too!

Bad news, it’s not due out until around Thanksgiving. Good news, you can add to your Goodreads list or pre-order now!

Here’s what you need to know:

I have something for you. When Quinn Cruz receives that cryptic text message from her older sister Nora, she doesn’t think much of it. They haven’t seen each other in nearly a year and thanks to Nora’s fierce aloofness, their relationship consists mostly of infrequent phone calls and an occasional email or text. But when a haunted Nora shows up at the lake near Quinn’s house just hours later, a chain reaction is set into motion that will change both of their lives forever.

Nora’s “something” is more shocking than Quinn could have ever imagined: a little girl, cowering, wide-eyed, and tight-lipped. Nora hands her over to Quinn with instructions to keep her safe, and not to utter a word about the child to anyone, especially not their buttoned-up mother who seems determined to pretend everything is perfect. But before Quinn can ask even one of the million questions swirling around her head, Nora disappears, and Quinn finds herself the unlikely caretaker of a girl introduced simply as Lucy.

While Quinn struggles to honor her sister’s desperate request and care for the lost, scared Lucy, she fears that Nora may have gotten involved in something way over her head—something that will threaten them all. But Quinn’s worries are nothing compared to the firestorm that Nora is facing. It’s a matter of life and death, of family and freedom, and ultimately, about the lengths a woman will go to protect the ones she loves.

ITTLE BROKEN THINGS is a novel about family secrets. The mystery begins when Nora, who is estranged from her sister, Quinn, drops off a little girl, only saying that Quinn can’t tell anyone that the girl is in her care, including her husband. Nora disappears just as quickly as she briefly came back into Quinn’s life, not explaining what she should do with this little girl and why all the secrecy.

The writing is beautiful. Told from multiple points of view—Quinn, Nora, their mother, Liz, and Nora’s friend, Tiffany. The mystery unfolds nicely and the pacing is well done. I can’t say more than that without giving away too much.

Thanks to NetGalley and Atria Books for the opportunity to review this book and for introducing me a new-to-me author.

Little Broken Things is the first book I have read written by Nicole Baart. Ms Baart is a talented writer, her colorful descriptions of places and people transports you there right into the thick of it. Thanks to Netgalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I thoroughly enjoyed this suspenseful packed story; a quick read that pulled me in and kept me turning the pages. I'm a sucker for suspense novels.

Nora drops a little girl named Lucy off at her sister Quinn's house and tells her to keep Lucy her safe without any additional information Nora flees. Nora doesn't leave any clue as to who Lucy is, and what she needs protection from. Quinn and her husband try to piece together who this child is and what or who they be watching out for. Liz is Nora and Quinn's mother who also plays a strong roll. I have to admit that unlike some of the other reviewers who never saw the twist coming, I had it pegged at the half way point. My only criticism is the end, the author has us get intimate with these beautiful characters and then let's us down with a flat ending.

Excellent read. I would definitely recommend to my friends..

Being a Minnesota girl myself, I fell deeply in love with the lake setting of this fast paced novel. The book is based around a seemingly cliche family: mom, deceased father, son, and two daughters. Personality clashes and life in general had torn the family apart. But one day the older sister, Nora, tells her little sister Quinn, she has something for her. It turns out to be a little girl that Quinn is asked to give shelter to without being given any information. It becomes quickly obvious that the little girl is in danger, and they realize that they may all be. The twisty plot sucks you in and doesn't let go. I never wanted to put the book down. The ending may surprise you, and you'll find yourself making judgements on whether the characters did the right thing... or not.
