I thoroughly enjoyed this book and towards the end I was reading as fast as I could to see if Robyn would catch her killer or not. Having read a lot of domestic noir recently where no one is quite as they seem and anyone can be the bad guy, it was lovely to return to the safe and ordered world of British Policing and know that the baddie was the baddie and that the police, even the unloved by Robyn, DI Shearer are the good guys.
I work in a civilian intelligence team and my husband is a chef and both careers are accurately portrayed by Wyer. This is a particular bug bear of mine, that the fiction of a book is excellent but not backed up by research and facts. This, apart from obvious creative licence for plot purposes felt authentic and credible throughout.
Without repeating the plot, something I don't like reviewers to do, there isn't much else to say about Secrets of the Dead. A great detective thriller with solidly built and believable characters, especially Robyn and Ross: tension built throughout with chapters that always gave you that 'just one more page' feeling.
I will definitely recommend this book and read more by Carol Wyer.

Thank you to Netgalley and the Publishers for this review copy.

This is the second book of the Robyn Carter Series. It can be read as a standalone book, but obviously it does make sense to read the books in order to understand parts of the story.

I had read the first book, Little Girl Lost, a while ago and forgot how much I enjoyed it. This book was fantastic! So good to the point that I finished it in just over a day! DI Robyn Carter is back and is now settled back into her job. The owner of a local Spa is found cooking nicely overnight on a high heat in the sauna. It looks like a simple case of accidental death, the guy had a heart condition and the heat caused a fatal heart attack. Robyn thinks otherwise and tries to persuade her counterpart to investigate more but is told to leave it by her superior. Meanwhile she also has to investigate a series of deaths which seem to be linked. All of the bodies are found with a note saying that the debt has been paid to the sum of £250,000. Can Robyn and her team find the killer before anyone else is murdered?

Wow, wow, wow. This was a great book!! I love Robyn! She’s been through such a tough time, but she is trying to get on with her life and her job which she is so good at. She throws herself into this case, trying to make up for a slight hiccup on her previous case where she almost arrests the wrong guy! The leads dry up and while the bodies are piling up, Robyn and her team are struggling to find a link. Robyn’s Private Investigator cousin, Ross appears again in this story having being sent undercover to the Health Spa to dig into the death of the owner. The relationship between these two is great, and like the first book, there is a humorous undertone. Ross should definitely have his own spin off book!

The story flowed so well and kept me hooked from page one. It is told mainly from Robyn’s perspective, but there are chapters written from the killer’s also (although you don’t get to find out who they are right until the end!) I tried to work it out, but genuinely didn’t guess who it was until it was revealed! There are lots of twists and turns, and a great ending! I can’t wait for the next book!!

Five Stars!

Wow an awesome follow up to the first book in the Robyn Carter Series. It didn't disappoint, it was full of tension that kept me gripped right from the start through to the last page. It was a real page turner that I couldn't put down. This is going to be a really great series and I can't wait for the next book already! Really good book, a solid 5 stars.

Another clever instalment in this series. A complex, dark story of revenge with just the right amount of camaraderie. The character of Ross is under used though.

Detective Robyn Carter has caught the case of a woman found murdered in a bath tub, holding a paper that says “all debts paid”. It’s an ominous message and she fears this will not be the killers last victim. Sometimes it sucks to be right, and it’s not long before a second victim is found. The public and the press are clamoring for an arrest and Robyn is under intense pressure to deliver, but there seem to be no clues, and nothing linking the two victims. The Leopard, as the press has dubbed him is fast, stealthy and lethal and Robyn has to pursue him through some of the wealthiest areas of town. What is the Leopard’s motive and where will he strike next? Sure to please mystery and thriller lovers with a whip smart protagonist and a cunning killer
