Light, happy, and poetic, even, this is the perfect Sunday read. I'd recommend a physical copy rather than the Kindle edition I read, simply for the illustrations. Oh, and I can't wait to see the show!

Any dog lover will relate to this book. The World is seen through the eyes of a dog, a very clever intuitive dog who feels lonely, jealous guilt., A trip to the vets leaves the owner concerned and the dog wonders why....... "at home, you curl up with me, although it is afternoon - I lick your tears away"A book you will read over and over discovering new things each time..

A fun, brief read for dog lovers, filled with beauty and truth:

Winter is Netflix
And a shared blanket we
both fart under

Yep.

This is a delightful book.. While I would not necessarily choose this title for a book club discussion; it is a perfect gift for ANY dog lover. The tone of this book, like the program, is absolutely charming and insightful.

Cute, quick read. Dog lovers will like and appreciate this book especially if they are familiar with the TV show of the same name. I'm glad this had a happy ending.

*Thank you for the ARC copy provided by Net Galley in exchange for an honest review*

Cute book with simple haikus from a dog's perspective. If own a dog or if you've ever owned a dog, you'll enjoy the simple sweetness of this book. A nice gift for the dog owner.

Thank you to Netgalley, Animal Media Group, Samm Hodges, and Phinheas Hodges for the gracious offer to read and review this ARC;

"and is it really my job to figure this stuff out?
I have so many questions and so little time."

I have to admit off the bat what I went into expect light and fluffy (on the account of being about a dog), or perhaps soul searching ideas (on the account of Haiku's), I was indeed blown away how this book managed in far less than ten minutes to make me feel moved so many times and more than once nearly to tears.

I found identifications to the bonding, the risk of loss, the heart deep dedication between them as the topics spanned so wide: chasing squirrels, getting fixed, having a lover, the rusty edge of disease and impending death, the quite imperfect truth that dogs age so much faster than people. The art, too, brought a brand new level to all the inspired feelings of this work.

I will be looking forward, with high hopes, to the future publications by these two.

This book was super short, quickly read, and so cute. I love my dog as much as the next and consistently wonder what he could possibly be thinking. This fun little piece gives in to that human questions, "What is my pet thinking?" I laughed out loud at multiple points throughout this and felt the need to share aloud with my boyfriend. Anyone with a dog would appreciate this read. I already have the show set to record on my DVR and look forward to the pilot episode.

Cute and funny haiku/poetry from a dog named Martin. A naughty dog as it turns out but despite a big scare everything turns out in the end. Sweet illustrations and kids will love it.

This is such a sweet book from an obvious dog lover!! It gives you little snippets of what a dog might be thinking in different situations. I love my dogs so much and hope that some of these thoughts are in their minds. Can't wait to watch the TV show!

This is an adorable book. It's as adorable as that beautiful baby on the cover! For dog lovers, it's hard to just read through the book. It's so reminiscent of our dog days. We have always had dogs!

Then, we got cats. We love them. But, they are not dogs.

Nevertheless, the cartoons are adorable too.

But, buyer beware. We don't want to spoil anything. But, there is a really sad part. You really can't guess what it is. Still, we would not be a true dog person if we didn't admonish.

What we will state is that this is why we never watch movies for children, where an animal is the star. Those are even more depressing than the aforementioned sad part.

Still, it's a darling book.

Not knowing what to expect from this, as it's part of some franchise I've never heard of, I have to say I hoped for better. Some of the verses are not haiku, to start with, and while trying to attain the feel of the form, some are off in the syllable count. The book is very devoid of content if you're like me unaware of the bigger picture, which seems to be using a dog to speak about something else entirely, so while it's not twee I really can't recommend this to anyone who isn't already a fan of some unknown TV series.

Martin is a dog who stars in a forthcoming ABC television show called, "Downward Dog." He has written "Downward Dog: Very Serious Haiku from a Very Serious Dog," a poetic homage to his life, his poop, his food, and to his beloved human, Nan. Of course, since Martin has not yet learned to write (I think), Samm Hodges and Phinheas Hodges, transcribe his thoughts for him, with Idil Gozde doing the illustrations.

Martin's funny, bitter sweet poetry reflects the innocence and soul of a "good dog." He thanks his "Mom and Dad, whoever you are," and his Nan, his human, "my moon and my stars for ever and ever. I love you so much I can never tell you, I will always love you, I love you, I love you, I can’t believe how much I love you. Also, please never leave again for the whole weekend; it was so, so horrible."

If you have ever loved a dog, you will recognize the truth in Martin's Haiku, and you will read it over and over again to catch every nuance and thought that Martin wants you to know.

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.

Right from the bat, I am giving this book -1 star. Going by the cover I thought this book would be full of that cute dog's photographs. Instead the book is full of tiny little illustrations which looked like they were made in a rush. Sorry, you want an honest opinion, I give one and this is how I feel.

Another -1 star for the fact that the book is mostly just white. One Haiku each page (or 1 or two times two haiku, or 1 that stretched over the entire 2 page spread). One (often tiny) illustration on another page. It just feels empty and I wish they thought a bit more about how to format this book. Maybe it works better as physical copy, but on my tablet it certainly didn't work. Which is a shame.

But the haiku were fun to read, and they really embody what a dog is thinking/doing/going through his life. The authors really did a great job. Quite often it just feels fake when people write something from the POV of a dog, but not in this one. Good job!

Sadly though I can't give this book more than 1.5 stars. The haiku were the only thing I loved about this book and they get 1.5 stars from me. The illustrations, the way the book was formatted, the white space everywhere, it just didn't work for me. Such a shame. It could have been so much better.
