A good read and a fun mystery. Worth your time - makes for a pleasant afternoon. Thanks for the arc.

I simply couldn’t finish this...rare for me. Ordinarily I enjoy reading fiction written any number of years ago, and I was very intrigued at the promise of travel and adventure in exotic locales. For some reason, this fell flat for me...slow moving and thin characters I couldn’t connect with.

I thoroughly enjoyed this. Twists and turns, very likeable characters and nice plot. It reminded me of Ellis Peters or Agatha Christie as far as background and telling style are concerned. I look forward to reading more in the series and following the heroine in her further travels

.
This was first published in 1969 and has recently been re-released with a new cover.
This is the first in a series of books about a journalist named Julia Probyn.
In book one, she agrees to go to Africa to look for her cousin [who is wayward] because the family requires him to return home to look after the family estate now that his uncle has died.
This book was not really my cup of tea and by the end, I was rather unenthralled with the main character and her actions.
The mystery took a backseat as Julia got a job, went traveling to various places and also met a variety of people. The descriptions of Morocco went on and on, and because of the previous date of release of this book, they felt quaint and outdated.
By the time Julia DID find cousin Colin, it was so convoluted and drawn out that I could barely finish the book. I was very disappointed as I really hoped this would be a marvelous read.

Unfortunately not a book I would recommend.

Fans of Poirot and Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries will absolutely love this book. Just the right mix of adventure, mystery, and romance, with a heroine that's hard not to love.

This one feels quite vintage and seems more like a classic romance than a mystery at times. The star is really the setting.

Review to follow soon…I am about halfway through this book which has taken me on travels to Casablanca, Fez and other locations. There is a missing person mystery, maybe spies and/or smuggling. What has happened to Julia’s cousin Will she find him? So far this is a fun read..
Finished my Armchair travels with The Lighthearted Quest. I enjoyed following Julia’s adventures and learning more about the politics of the time. The author appears knowledgeable about the conflicts between the French and the citizens of the cities mentioned above. Everything is tied up very neatly at the end. I would most likely read other books in this series although the novels might seem a bit slow to the modern reader. If you enjoyed books by Helen MacInnes, give this a try.?

I loved this book that I was given to read for a review. The Lighthearted Quest by Ann Bridge may have been written about 1950's Africa by a woman born in 1889, but it is still timely today. . The quest may have been light hearted, but this is no silly cosy (which I often enjoy). The langue is complex and intelligent, but it is the insight into foreign cultures and the development of the interactions that may have contributed to the terrorism we face today that I found fascinating. On the outside it is an adventure/mystery gently told, dig deeper and it is a glimpse into the social culture of another era. I would love to read more by Ann Bridge.
