This is the authors third book I have read now and I have to say I am getting to be quite the fan. I know as soon as I pick up one of her books that I am guaranteed a good read and Liar was certainly no different.

The story starts off with a shocking start and then goes back to where it all started off and the events that lead back up to the present day. It flicks between Amber who is Ben’s new partner and Judi, Ben’s mum.

As a parent I do think it’s hard thinking that anyone is good enough for your children. Judi was lucky that she loved Ben’s first wife who sadly lost her life to cancer and is very much shocked and scared when Ben informs his parents that he has met someone else.

Without a doubt I could relate to Judi. She has been a big part of Ben’s as well as her grand children’s lives for the last two years. When Amber comes into their lives, it’s obvious that she wants Judi cut out of their lives.

Amber I took an instant dislike to straight away. It is obvious she is up to something but I didn’t know why. She seems hell bent on making things as difficult for Judi as possible and delights at driving a wedge between mother and son.

Liar is one very twisted story where I was certain I knew the outcome. The author weaves a story with twists and turns that I didn’t see coming and made me question everything. No way did I ever envision the ending to this book which I loved it when an author takes me by surprise. I would have personally loved some sort of epilogue as it ended slightly abruptly for me and left me wondering a few things but other than that I totally loved it.

Thank goodness this one is short, because it's very, very hard to put down. As the official description of "psychological thriller" suggests, it messed with my head - mostly as I tried to figure out what was really going on in the minds of the two primary characters, both of whom clearly are in need of some serious psychiatric help.

One of those characters, Judi, is mother to Ben and grandmother to his two young sons. Another of Judi's sons, David, was killed years ago, but she maintains his bedroom almost as a shrine in the home she shares with her husband. Especially since her relationship with her husband has deteriorated over time, helping Ben with his sons provides her with much-needed joy and comfort - and she'll do absolutely anything to keep them all close. A couple of years earlier, Ben's wife (and mother of the grandsons) died, leaving Ben to raise them on his own. A dedicated teacher, Ben is lonely; but focusing on his work and his sons (and endless help from his mother), he's coping as best he can.

But suddenly, Ben meets Amber - and everything changes. As their whirlwind romance begins, Ben is happy once again; his mother Judi, not so much. As Amber worms her way into Ben's life - taking over "responsibilities" Judi believes are now and always will be hers and threatening her treasured family dynamic - the tension builds. Amber, Judi is certain, is up to no good; and she sets out to find out exactly why that is (and in the process discredit Amber in Ben's rose-colored eyes). That becomes harder as Judi encounters resistance from Ben and her husband, both of whom think she's being overly critical. Judi herself even has a few doubts about her feelings, given that she's also dealing with the physical symptoms of menopause (as an aside, that was a little puzzling to me since Judi is 59 - way beyond the average age of 51. Certainly, it can begin much later, but it's far less common). At any rate, Judi goes to great lengths to keep that change a secret from the men in her life - I suppose because she thinks they'll take her even less seriously (as if that were possible).

Constantly facing opposition from them but convinced Amber is up to no good, Judi begins to dig deeper - and what she learns only bolsters her belief and distrust of Ben's about-to-be second wife. As all that unfolds, readers are treated to snippets of what Amber really is thinking as chapters shift from her perspective to Judi's. The whole thing comes to an exciting climax as dark secrets from the past of both women are revealed.

My conclusion? Pretty creepy - and thus destined to be a hit. Many thanks to the publisher (via NetGalley) for the opportunity to read an advance review copy.

A superb read for on holiday (which I am) when you can sit round the pool & just read and read without much distraction. It had me hooked from the start & had me guessing the outcome even though the ending is told in the first chapter.
Maybe if I had to be picky I would say just too many tragedies in all the characters' lives but just go with it & it really doesn't matter.

Despite my misgivings about the psychological thriller genre lately, I jumped on the chance to read an advanced copy of Liar because I had enjoyed KL Slater's previous book and just assumed, quite rightly, that I would like this one too.

Judy's life revolves around her son, Ben, and her grandsons. But all this changes when Ben meets Amber. Judy instantly dislikes her son's new girlfriend and the feeling seems to be mutual. But why?

Judy is incredibly domineering. Used to being the only woman in her son's life, she finds it tough to relinquish some of the responsibilities she's been dealing with since Ben's wife passed away. Amber, however, has quite the controlling vibe as well so it's no wonder they clash. All I could think was how lucky I am with my mothers-in-law. (Plural, yes. I have two. Send wine.)

This story starts with the end. No, really. I actually checked my kindle because I thought it had accidentally put me at the end when I hadn't even started reading yet. Unfortunately for me, I figured out the end at the beginning right away. (Not the end at the end. Get it?) And while there's tension and some surprises and twists as you would expect, most of it seemed a bit too predictable to me. However, the author can spin one heck of a tale and even after having figured a lot of it out, it still held my attention throughout and there may have been a moment when I uttered a surprised "oh!".

Another enjoyable read by KL Slater and I look forward to seeing what she comes up with next.

Many thanks to Bookouture and Netgalley for my advanced copy, which I chose to review.

I have been looking forward to another of K.L. Slater's psychological thrillers ever since I finished Blink, and this one has definitely turned out to be another masterpiece. Fast-paced, well written and enjoyable prose, unreliable characters, many many plot twists, an explosive ending... Liar has simply the full psychological thriller package! I've read stories about the mother-in-law-daugher-in-law and stepmother relationship before, but I think this one might just be the best one yet. Especially the first one is portrayed brilliantly in this newest story and both Amber and Judi's character are both realistic, well developed and highly unreliable. This 'unreliable narrator' technique doesn't always work in stories, but was very well executed in Liar and resulted in some very shocking plot twists. There is no way the explosive ending will not completely shock and surprise you! Secrets, plot twists, unreliable characters, suspense... This story will have you in its claws from the very first page and won't let you go until the very end! If you like the genre, add this to your wishlist. You'll be in for a treat.
