I’m going to start this review with a bit of a caveat. I finished reading this book on July 5th.. THAT WAS LITERALLY 20 DAYS AGO! Omg, when did I become so horrible at writing reviews? LOL Do I even remember this book well enough to write a decent review? I guess we will see!

So I did a binge buddy read with Misty @ Misty’s Book Space. We decided to sit down and read this book all in one day and to do that together! It was really fun to binge read this with a buddy. We definitely motivated each other to keep reading and push through. We didn’t completely read the book in one day, but we did get it mostly read. I only had 60 pages to finish on the second day, so that was really successful! If you want to check out Misty’s thoughts on Liar, please click here.

Now on to my thoughts of Liar. This is KL Slaters third book. I have read and review both of her previous books and I really enjoyed them. I also really really enjoyed this one as well. KL Slater is definitely an author that I need to read every book of hers!

KL Slater has a way of crafting her stories where you can not guess the plot twist! I would have never guessed the big reveal! Even though I did guess the minor reveal that goes along with the major reveal. If that makes any sense at all. LOL

I really enjoyed the story building and getting to know the characters. The main characters in this book were Ben, Judi, and Amber. I really despised Amber, like I have no words. That didnt really change by the end of the book, but I did end up not disliking her as much as I previously did. Judi was the character I sympathize with the most, she goes through A LOT over the course of this book. There’s so much I could say about Judi, but SPOILERS ARE NOT A THING HERE ON MY BLOG so I will leave it at that. Ben was just completely freaking FRUSTRATING with how gullible he was. Like I wanted to just slap him multiple times.

There were, however, a few reasons why I just couldn’t give this book the full 5 stars. The major reason was because I felt like the ending was super rushed. Like I wanted more details and it to be a little more fleshed out. Maybe if the pacing was a little better it would have worked out. Like the beginning was super slow, I just kept thinking like ok…what are you getting at here. There were also a lot of unnecessary information that didnt really play a part to this story, which was kind a bummer because I thought Slater could’ve done more with some of that information or taken it out completely.

That seems to be a common complaint for me. The beginning being a little too slow with unnecessary fluff and the ending being way too rushed for my liking. At least I know I’m consistent on that aspect. Unfortunately, Liar was definitely one of the books that had this happen.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it to others that are looking for a psychological thriller. But I would recommend any of KL Slater’s books for that as well!

In other great news, we already know the name and release date of KL Slater’s next book and I CANNOT WAIT to pick this book up! Her 4th book is called THE MISTAKE and the release date is October 4, 2017! As soon as I can preorder a paperback, I will be doing that! I have some good feels about this book already! Isn’t that cover so appealing and gorgeous!

K L Slater has written a gripping and intriguing story. Judi the devoted mother in the story will do anything to protect her family. When her widowed son meets Amber who seems perfect, Judi has her doubts and in a short time it looks like Judi could be right. Loved the characters, storyline and all the twists and turns. With a totally unexpected ending LIAR is a great read.

I was disappointed in this book the premise was good but the characters were so unlikable that I found it hard going. There was a good twist but it wasn't enough to redeem the book.

After his wife’s death, single dad Ben has been doing his best to raise his two young sons, Noah and Jake, alone. When Ben meets Amber, he’s immediately enamored with her. She could be everything that’s been missing in his life, and it appears she feels the same way about him. The only problem is Ben’s mother, Judi. Judi feels confident that something is off about Amber. Things are moving too quickly, and Ben only sees what he wants to see. In order to protect her son and grandchildren, Judi will do whatever it takes to make Ben see the truth about Amber.

The more Judi learns about Amber, the more lies she uncovers, and secrets are revealed that may just break her family apart for good.

I’m a big fan of K.L. Slater’s books, and this was no exception. Liar starts off with a bang, and ends with an even bigger one. Unlike many of the thrillers I’ve read lately, this book was not focused around a murder case, rather it told the story of a complicated relationship between a mother and someone who could potentially be her daughter-in-law. Setting aside the aspects of the mystery, it was really interesting to me to read a story where the mother sort of wants her son to choose between her and his partner, especially since you hear so many horror stories about terrible in-law relationships!

Liar is primarily told through Judi’s point of view, however there are chapters from both Amber and Noah’s perspectives mixed in as well. Amber’s chapters especially added to the tension, as we know she’s set on making Judi’s life hell, but we don’t know why. Each of the characters have definite flaws – Judi is over involved in her son’s life, and often doesn’t understand the line between parent and grandparent and where her role ends. Amber has ulterior motives for being part of Ben’s family, and Ben is so wrapped up in Amber that he doesn’t notice any red flags.

While I did manage to figure out a few small pieces of the twists that came as part of the final resolution, there was one piece that came as a total shock, which completely solidified my 5 star rating for the book after I read it! I absolutely loved it, and was left with my mouth hanging open by the time I put the book down!

All in all, I recommend Liar for fans of the thriller genres, especially if you’re looking for a break from the many thrillers that feature murders and/or kidnappings. K.L. Slater is a force to be reckoned with in the thriller genre, and has quickly made her way onto my list of “auto buy” authors! I can’t wait to read more from her in the future. A huge thank you to Netgalley, K.L. Slater, and Bookouture (who really can do no wrong when it comes to publishing!) for an advanced copy of the book. It was my pleasure to provide an honest review. Liar is out now, so be sure to pick this one up!

I love this author. This book was all I hoped for and more. I highly recommend this book to everyone. Loved the writing, loved the characters and loved the story.

This book just tore me apart! I have so many contradictory feelings surrounding it.
"Liar" is a solid psychological thriller. It is truly gripping, suspenseful and makes you feel for the characters.
What I absolutely hated about this book is how it made me feel. When I say "hate" it will probably make everyone think I did not enjoy the book but that's not true. I liked the book itself but I was and still am very unsettled by how it made me feel. I hated the fact that this book found it's way straight through to my heart and exposed my deepest fears. I felt anger, sadness and so much frustration... I think this a really great read but only for people with very strong nerves.

Heard a lot of good things about this book so thought I would try it. It did not disappoint, I was gripped and could not wait to read on to see the turn of events. Although I figured out part of the ending there were still surprises along the way. This is a new author for me but I will look out for their back catalogue now.

A brilliant psychological thriller that I couldn't put down.

Liar by K.L. Slater is a psychological thriller.

First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher, and of course, the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The book tells the story of Judi, a middle-aged woman who has been looking after her family for a very long time. Perhaps her husband Henry hasn’t been quite as faithful as he should be, but she is pretty sure that was in the past. Also in the past is the death of their son David. However, her son Ben is very much alive and in need of her attention. When her daughter-in-law died of cancer two years ago, she got even more involved in Ben’s life, by looking after his two sons. Gramma’s house was theirs to roam. Even when she started struggling with menopause, nothing would stop her from looking after her family. She picked the kids up from school, she made them dinner, she did the laundry and ironing, cleaned Ben’s house…. Then Ben meets the beautiful and intriguing Amber. He falls head over heels in love. Judi seems to be the only one who sees that there is something wrong with Amber. But her son is finally putting his foot down, and if Judi isn’t careful, she could lose her family. Amber has her own issues and her own agenda, and she has no intention of letting Ben’s mother rule the roost. Her plans depend on Judi losing everything. The question remains…how far will you go to protect your family?

Now I am not going to tell you I liked any of the characters in this book, because I didn’t. Judi was overly domineering while trying to look like the injured party, and Amber was intrusive and obnoxious, while trying to get the upper hand and make Judi look bad. Henry was disgusting, and Ben was weak, both men portrayed as very shallow. The boys were okay. However, the family dynamics and interactions were great!

I loved the way the story was told from the perspective of both Judi and Amber. It really kept the story moving fast.

I admit, this is the first book I have read by this author. It will not be the last. I initially thought this was going to be a run-of-the-mill novel, but I quickly fell in love with the style of writing, and although I did not like the characters in the book, I liked their depth, loved the plot, and loved the twisted ending (although I do admit to having an idea about the ending about mid-way through).

Kim Slater says she got the inspiration from this book from reading an article of how few legal rights that grand-parents have to see their grandchildren in the event they are estranged from the parents. Well, she certainly took that article to the next level!

Good book! Worth the read!

This is my first K L Slater novel and I quite enjoyed it. I will be looking for others.

One widowed man, two very young children and two women what a volcanic situation. I felt rather sorry for Ben, but, I also felt he should have grown a backbone with both women.
Ben is a fairly recent widower and feels that as his life is pretty stable now following the death of his wife, the children are working through the grieving process. When he met Amber he really thought that she would be a good fit in his little family but she has her own agenda and reason for ‘meeting’ Ben.
Ben feels that now he has Amber his rather controlling mother Judi should take it easy, maybe not do quite so much with the boys. Judi doesn’t agree and decides to start looking into Amber and her lies and secrets begin to unravel…….

Read for an honest review. Thank you Netgalley and Bookcoutre

Well Kim, you've done it again, this book is fantastic, I have read blink and that also was great but this I think was even better.
The book starts by focusing on someone bring murdered but your not sure who and it will keep you guessing right up to the end.
Judi is the main character of this book and I liked how the chapters were mainly from her point of view and thought but there were other chapters from other characters in the book. Judi is a woman who at nearly sixty feels overlooked, to stop this feeling she has out everything into her widowed sons life, helping him run the house and help look after his two young sons. Almost overnight Amber comes into his life taking over all of judi's responsibilities making her feel worthless again. The story moves on to Ambers background but only briefly leaving you trying to work out the missing bits.
I loved how the story flowed and couldn't wait to get to the end.
I would like to thank netgalley and bookouture for this ARC I received in exchange for an honest review.

Oh, this did have a nice twist.

I knew something was coming, and I was a little bit right about where it was headed, but I wasn't completely right - and I was very surprised.

As I read this, I was on edge. I was so very concerned for our characters and really wanted one person to get what was coming to them. I was also very frustrated by one character who was a bit blind to everything that was going on.

This is one of those good beach reads that you'll want to read straight through without stopping!

I absolutely loved this book and hav already recommended it! Hooked from the start I was so nerested to see how the story panned out and loved the ending! I will post a better review on my blog but it's a 5 Star from me and on my Goodreads 5 star shelf!

Crazy obsessive girlfriend or crazy obsessive mother - what's worse? I don't even know how to begin to describe just how psychotic both of these women were! Those poor men/ boys that have to deal with them have a lot cut out for them. Basically if you are interested in thrilling family melodrama, this one is for you!

What a fabulous read! Totally gripping and absorbing, a book that I couldn't put down and left me shocked! The book follows the story of single dad Ben and his two young sons and his devoted and overbearing Mum, Juldi. When he meets Amber he thinks she is the ideal person for him and his boys. Of course, Judi dislikes her straight away but this is only part of the story. What happened to Ben's brother? Where does Judi's husband go in his overnight trips? What secrets are Amber concealing? This book is full of secrets and lies that will shock you at times. A must read psychological thriller, can't wait to catch up on her previous books.
Thanks to Net Galley and Bookouture for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.

I'm clearing my shelf. I've not read yet but will.

A suspenseful story, mainly told from the point of view of two unreliable narrators - a possessive mother/grandmother and a scheming girlfriend with her own agenda. The plot held my attention for most of the book, but I found the characters uninteresting and one-dimensional, and the ending was far-fetched.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the advanced copy.

Liar

Another Bookouture beauty! I've read a couple of Slater's books and they're just getting better and better in my opinion.

This is an addictive psychological thriller that had me on the edge of my seat. I just didn't know who to trust and who was lying! I love a book that messes with your head like that! Four stars from purplebookstand.
