In this fun children’s book, Monty the Malodorous has a well-kept secret. He cannot swim.

To hide his secret, Monty declares that “Real pirates don’t bathe! Yar-har-har!”

But the not taking a bath thing catches up with him. Monthy falls in love with Meg the mermaid. It is Meg who tells him, “You’re a real nice pirate, Monty, but you smell like stinky boots.” Monty begins to consider rethinking his avoidance of contact with water.

His pondering is interrupted when a giant octopus kidnaps Meg. Faced with choosing between obeying his fear or listening to love, Monty has a choice to make. What will he do?

Captain Monty is a scary pirate who everyone is afraid of. Captain Monty also stinks and has a big secret. Every Monday, his crew jumps into the sea to bathe, all except Captain Monty. He won't bathe because he can't swim. He is also in love with a mermaid, Meg, which poses all kinds of problems. The biggest one is that Meg thinks he smells like stinky boots and does not want to have dinner with him. When Meg, the mermaid needs help, Captain Monty gets over his fear of water and jumps in to save her. Fortunately for him, they work together and both of them survive. After the ordeal, Meg teaches Captain Monty to swim so they can spend time together. A great lesson about not giving up and learning something new can be easy with the right teacher. This is a cute story with fun illustrations that show detail and emotions. A cute book for a school or classroom library.

This is a fun story about overcoming your fears. I wasn't a hug fan of the illustrations and I did think they let the story down as they could have been so much better, but I did think that the story was good - 4 stars

Apparently Captain Monty stinks. All because he won't take a bath. Why won't he take a bath? Because he does not know how to swim. He has even worse luck because he falls in love with a mermaid, who will not have dinner with him because of his odor. But when the mermaid needs help, Captain Monty gets over his fear of water and jumps in to save her. Overall, not a bad story. Cute, fun illustrations, and a fun read.

I received this arc from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Captain Monty and his crew sail the six or seven seas. Every Monday the crew jumps in the water for their weekly bath. Monty who can't swim chooses to stay on the ship and not bathe. One day a fair maiden mermaid comes upon the ship and Captain Monty is smitten. When she is captured by an octopus and he must save her, but that means diving into the water. Cute story and illustrations.

A HUGE hit at our house. You know a book is going to be a favorite of your three year old son when it focuses on a pirates that stink because he is afraid of the water. The illustrations are funny and wonderfully done. They help as an access point for the youngest readers. This is the perfect addition to the home and school library as a fun story that also shows you can overcome your fears with the right motivation and a little help from a friend.

This book is full of exciting and engaging illustrations. The story is a beautiful and shows the lengths that someone (or a fox) would go for someone they care about. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and will be adding it to my shopping list.
