This is a series and author that I've read forever. I love that a lot of her series are offshoots of other series and takes place in one of my favorite

areas, Montana. She manages to keep me engaged with both the suspense and romance. I especially like that the suspense is not overwhelmed by the romance. There's just the right amount of romance, this time it was done more in flashbacks

not intense romance per se.

One of my favorite aspects of Daniels books is that she generally can windup her series in about two years. To me that means I can collect the series and then binge read a 6 book or so series in a long weekend.

Review: It was nice to return to Montana, the Cahill Ranch and the Cahill family once again especially since it’s around Christmas. Cowboy’s Legacy is Flint and Maggie’s story but showcases the sheriff’s office, his ex-wife, Flint’s family, the town they live in as well as some of Maggie’s past. The book drew me in from the first page to the last and it’s like I hadn’t left the small town of Gilt Edge, Montana. The story also takes place in Wyoming and North Dakota and not a beat was missed. The book had many story lines going on, some dark and some light, but were woven seamlessly together and picked up where Outlaw’s Honor, the second book in the series, left off.

While there were mysteries to be solved about crimes committed, especially who abducted Maggie, both Flint, the sheriff, and Harp, one of the deputies, were not supposed to be involved in the police work for different reasons. Throughout the book, Flint’s love for Maggie showed through and he did everything he could to find her before it was too late. Harp and Vicki were back with the continuation of their bumbling romance and even Jenna who had disappeared for several months was key to the plot. It was nice to see the Cahill family always there for each other and the support they gave to one another.

The descriptions of the lands, the snow, the cold and the mountains were breathtaking and made me feel that I was there. There were crimes committed, abductions, shootouts, family and friends, along with tears, fear, horror, angst, sadness, disbelief, happiness, laughter and love. The story flowed nicely and the characters had a depth to them that we uncovered a little at a time. There was nice closure and several happily ever afters with the chance for several more. I can’t wait to be back at the Cahill Ranch since there are still three brothers that need their stories told. I for one can’t wait for more.

I need to read the first book in the series, Renegade’s Pride, as well as the 2.5 novella in the Cahill Ranch series, Cowboy’s Reckoning. Cowboy’s Legacy is only the fourth book I have read by Daniels but I have added a few of her books to my always growing TBR pile.

Cowboy's Legacy in the third novel in the Cahill Ranch series but only the second one I've read, and I'm happy to say that I enjoyed this one more than I enjoyed book #2 in the series, Outlaw's Honor, which I gave a 2-star rating. This novel merits 3.5 stars--I liked it but I didn't love it.

First, as with the previous novel, I need to comment on the title and cover photo. The hero of this novel is a sheriff, not a cowboy, there's no legacy involved, and horses aren't even mentioned--there are plenty of vehicles, none of them a horse. I don't know if the title and cover photo are decided upon by the author or her publisher, but while it was an attractive cover it and the title had absolutely nothing to do with this book.

We first meet the heroine of this novel, Maggie Thompson, as she wakes from a nightmare in which she's drowning, and being pushed beneath the water but she can't see the face of whoever is pushing her down. As the novel progresses, drowning has absolutely nothing to do with this story. She's in love with her boyfriend, Sheriff Flint Cahill, but he's been taking their relationship slowly since he has a lying, conniving, controlling ex-wife, Celeste, who, although she's already remarried a wealthier man, still has her hooks in Flint, and doesn't like the fact that he too is moving on with his life. We learn of a number of attempts she'd made against Maggie in the past, and although this novel can be read as a standalone, for the backstory on Flint and Celeste, I'd suggest you read this series in the order written, as a number of characters you'll meet in this novel were introduced in previous ones, as well as a couple of characters who were regulars in one of Ms. Daniels previous series.

Flint in thrilled when Maggie finally agrees to move into his home right before Christmas, and he's happily anticipating their first Christmas together. He's been carrying around the engagement ring he bought her for months and plans to propose, but on the day she begins moving some of her things to his house she's abducted--her car is in his driveway with the door open and some of her things are still inside. It's clear from the knocked over bookcase, generaly disarry, and the blood found at the scene that something violent happened to her inside Flint's home. Earlier that day, Maggie had bumped into Celeste at the market and believed that she had overheard her phone conversation with Flint, telling Flint of her plans to move in that day. Suddenly Celeste, who lies about everything, becomes the prime suspect.

But Maggie isn't the only missing person in town. Jenna, a waitress and relative newcomer to town is also missing and believed by some to have been killed by her boyfriend, although there's no concrete proof of that, no crime scene and no body. Flint puts two characters we met and loved in Ms. Daniels' Beartooth series, ex-Sheriff Frank and his snoopy, busybody wife, Nettie, onto that case. Both are now working as private investigators, and it was great to see them again.

So, are the two disappearances connected in some way, and will these two missing women be found, and, if found, will they be found dead or alive? That's the question that tortures Flint, who is desperate to find Maggie but who has been officially taken off the case since his home was a crime scene, and although no one seems willing to point the finger at him, he's still a suspect. We also learn that although he planned to propose to Maggie, he knows almost nothing about her or her past, and since their physical relationship is fairly recent, what on earth have they been talking about during their courtship? Maggie knows plenty about Celeste and the breakup of Flint's marriage, but Flint knows almost nothing about Maggie, not even if she was previously married, or had a bad break-up with a shady character, not even anything about her childhood or family or if she even has a family, which is something I found very troublesome about this story. Flint is, after all, a sheriff, yet at no time during his courtship asked Maggie anything about her past.

There are plenty of secondary characters and relationships added to this novel, such as the one between one of the deputies, Harp, and his girlfriend, Vicki. Flint doesn't think much of Harp as an employee and wishes he could fire him, but I felt that this side story, although it added some intrigue, and a possible alternate theory as to who might have abducted Maggie and what might have been his motive, the juxtaposition of Harp's attempts to be the hero in this case distracted from the main story of Flint's search for Maggie. And then there's Celeste, who is so easy to hate for what she's done to break up Flint and Maggie's relationship, that I really hoped she would be the guilty party, and get her comeuppance, but did she do it? If she did, where could she have hidden and/or disposed of Maggie? And where's Jenna? Since I don't believe in spoilers, to find out you'll have to read this novel. I will tell you that the ending was a shocker for this reader, and I certainly didn't see it coming. As I stated at the outset, it's a very good whodunit, but I would have liked to see a little more romance.

I voluntarily read an advance readers copy of this novel. The opinions expressed are my own.

My Rating:

4.5

Favorite Quotes:

She repeated the woman’s words verbatim. It was a gift from when she’d been the worst gossip in the county. She never got what she’d heard wrong

She’s the kind of woman who would eat her young.

My Review:

Two women had disappeared from a small rural community with one overlapping similarity recounted by witnesses. Many chapters later we discover many more overlapping issues for these two well-constructed mysteries that had confounded the authorities and crossed three state lines. I was confounded by the knowledge that this talented author has written thirteen different series for a total of two-hundred-thirty books, and this is just my second time to stumble upon one of her intriguing tales. For shame, I have been remiss. Ms. Daniels is a gifted storyteller and weaves an engaging and entertaining tale with suspense, humor, quirky yet knowable characters, and colorfully described and vividly detailed visuals. The story was well-crafted and deviously plotted with twists and turns and blind alleys to keep us hapless readers on our toes as well as humble. I will certainly be humbly watching her listings from now on.

I was really impressed with Daniels' romantic suspense in the last book of hers I read but this took it to a whole new level! This is some very real suspense with some very real danger and it was quite a gripping read!

The story is mostly told through Flint's eyes though I did feel like I got to know Maggie as well as he knew her. It was an interesting twist especially because the couple was not together through quite a bit of the book but I still felt like I was invested in their relationship. It was so clear just how much Flint loved her and how good they were together.

Flint's ex-wife, Celeste, makes a pretty great villain. She's so awful and manipulative but while she is a bit extreme I think we all know someone like her in some way or another. I liked too that she wasn't a paper cut out villain. There's a touch of depth to her here and there though she's still pretty terrible. As well I LOVED the Cahill family. I'm hoping the two bachelor brothers get their own books soon.

I did guess most of what of the whos and whys ahead of time but this isn't completely a mystery so I didn't have a problem with that. The character development was wonderful and I really loved how Daniels developed the relationship with the couple apart. This is a series and an author I'm really looking forward to reading more from.

Gone in the blink of an eye! Family and friends rally around the Sheriff when the light of his life suddenly disappears. The core characters are quite intriguing and you are drawn into their situation as soon as the story starts … there are also several sub-plots, one that was very beneficial to the story, with a couple more that didn’t add a lot to the storyline. Overall a solid book with strife, danger and happily ever afters!

Sheriff Flint Cahill has finally found something to look forward to in life again after an unpleasant divorce from his rocky marriage. The new love in his life, Maggie Thompson, brings sunshine to his days and love to his heart and he’s ready to move forward with making their relationship something to last forever … but just as they are on the verge of taking that next step, Maggie vanishes! All signs point to an abduction … and his finger is pointing at his troublesome ex-wife! Will Flint be able to bury his rage long enough to be able to figure out where she’s being held before it’s too late to bring her home again?

He looked out at the country that ran to the mountains. Cahill Ranch. His grandfather had started it, his father had worked it and now two of his brothers ran the cattle part of it to keep the place going while he and his sister, Lillie, and brother Darby had taken other paths. Not to mention their oldest brother Tucker who’d struck out at seventeen and hadn’t been seen or heard from since.

Cowboy’s Legacy by B.J. Daniels is the third ultra exciting installment in B.J.’s Cahill Ranch western romantic suspense series. It can be read as a standalone if that is your preference. The story is gripping from the very first page. The tension mounts palpably making this intense, fast-paced tale set at Christmastime amidst a brutal snowstorm a page-turner readers will not want to put down!

Flint’s and Maggie’s story has been building since the first book. Cowboy Legacy’s plot primarily focuses on the kidnapping of Maggie Thompson who is Sheriff Flint Cahill’s love interest. Flint has been a loner since his divorce from his crazy and unbalanced first wife, Celeste. But, now, Flint has finally found love with Maggie. It’s taken him some time, but he’s fully ready for the next step with Maggie. AND Maggie has decisefully agreed to move in with Flint. That’s when things take a dire turn as Maggie disappears, from all appearances, a kidnapping victim. As the clock ticks on Maggie’s abduction, the chances of finding her alive grow less likely every minute. Flint, who never breaks the rules, breaks a lot of rules in this tale as he desperately seeks to rescue Maggie before it’s too late. He’d dreamed of spending their first Christmas together and fears that he’ll never see her alive again.

B.J. has a knack for making her characters likable and genuine and crafts her bad guys exceedingly well. She’s also known for her assorted plot twists and interwoven side stories and Cowboy’s Legacy has plenty of both!

Now running their own PI firm, Frank and Nettie return in a supporting role to assist Flint. All the clues seem to point to Celeste being the villain. There’s no doubt that she’s a conniving woman who can’t seem to tell the truth for the life of her. But, could she really pull off seizing Maggie and absconding with her without a trace? The mystery of Jenna’s disappearance - which occurred in a previous book - takes on new meaning. Deputy Huck’s and Vicki’s relationship continues - Is he a hero or a villain and will Vicki ever grow up? AND, of course, in this series which centers around the Cahill clan, fans will be deliriously happy catching up as prior favorites play major supporting roles.

Following please find a few of my favorite quotes from Cowboy’s Legacy:

“What were you doing out here?”
He chuckled. “Looking for aliens. What else?”
---

“She’s the kind of woman who would eat her young.”
---

She was in so fast that she didn’t have a chance to scream. The icy cold water stole her breath away…
---

In the distance, he could see a large star made out of red and green lights on the side of a barn, a reminder that Christmas was coming.

B.J. is one of my favorite authors. Cowboy’s Legacy is an emotional and moving tale interlaced throughout with edge-of-your-seat danger sequences. There are maniacal twists and turns seemingly at every corner. I loved it! I actually had to put the book aside too many times to count to allow my heart rate to go down a bit before continuing. Fans of heart-pounding thrillers featuring sexy cowboys will truly find their nirvana in Cowboy’s Legacy. I can't wait for B.J.’s next Montana Cahills’ book!

Cowboy's Legacy is the third book in the Cahill Ranch series. It's the second one that I have read. In this one, Sheriff Flint Cahill's girlfriend is kidnapped and he must do whatever it takes to find her. As with the first book in the series, it ended up be OK for me. I felt like there were too many side stories that took away from the main couple. I almost wish I had read book two before this one as I had the feeling that I was missing information. References were made to that book and had me a bit lost at times. As a mystery, this one was pretty solid. I was definitely kept guessing. But if you are going in hoping for a romance, it's pretty not really there are the majority of the book is spent with the couple apart. They already have an established relationship as well. Just keep that in mind when you pick up the book.

This is the first in the series that I’ve read and I’m not sure how much of that impacted the story.  What I got was more suspense than romance – the two leads spend 98% of the book apart and there isn’t a lot of backstory to fill things in – but maybe they made appearances in early books ... I'm not sure.  I’m not saying that it wasn’t enjoyable (it was really good, actually) but it was different that what I was expecting.

So, having said that, I’ll get to the really good part :)  The mystery over what happened to Maggie kept me on the edge of my seat.  Daniels does a great job of leading you through the investigation and revealing each piece as it comes up.  Nothing felt overly heavy handed and nowhere did it feel like you were being sent on a wild goose chase unnecessarily.  It is so easy for a mystery to get away from the author but I was truly quite satisfied with the big reveal & resolution.

Daniels is a fan favorite for a reason and she shows it once again!

Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) provided by the Author and Publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an fair and honest review.

I love B.J. Daniels. She is my favorite Harlequin author and I've read a lot of her books and have loved most of them. This book is one of the really, really good ones. It has a wonderful, hot hero who just won't give up. It has a plot that twists and turns and delivers. It has a climax that is one of the best I've ever read. This is the middle book in the series and I can't wait to read the next one.

Sheriff Flint Cahill has been seeing Maggie for several months and he's tired of taking it slowly. He has a ring and all he needs is a "yes". Even his ex-wife has been behaving herself, thankfully. When Maggie calls him and tells him she is ready to move in, Flint can't wait to get home to her. When he arrives home, he doesn't find the welcome he is expecting. Maggie's care is there, but she isn't, and there are signs of a struggle and blood on the floor.

Who has taken Maggie and why. At the top of the suspect list is Celeste, Flint's ex. Flint just knows she is lying, but since all she has done lately is lie, how can he trust anything she says. And, Flint has been relieved of his duties, but he can't not try to find Maggie.

This installment of the series was not what I expected at all but reading it was time well spent. While the title seems to be a misnomer, the story itself is a combination of non-stop suspense, drama and action that will keep you flipping pages very quickly as you join the characters in a race against time to unearth secrets that are the key to untangling the mystery surrounding Maggie’s disappearance.

Flint is relentless in his search for Maggie and finds himself open to bending the laws he upholds so unflinchingly in his quest to find her. I enjoyed that many of the tidbits that we got from the previous two books came together in this book, a wrap up of the overarching story-line. We get to know both Flint and Maggie much better as well as their histories and how their pasts have shaped their present and their romance.

I had so much fun reading this book even though it was not the usual romance. This story is like inadvertently getting on a runaway train, in a good way and will leave you surprised but also happy that you got to read it. I’m keeping my review spoiler-free because I think everyone should experience this book for themselves, without any hints.

I actually was pleasantly surprised with this book. It was such a random pick and I never even knew what it was about. All I was going off of what the authors name and I wasn't disappointed. This was a mystery book full of so many suspected it was fun making guesses over time. I loved that there was so much suspicion thrown around that I just couldn't make up my mind on who I thought it was and when it came right down to finding out who it was wondering what the kidnapper would do. Not knowing much about the person make the kidnapper a wild card and when the person Maggie was found you got to wonder how things will go down. Such a great book I pretty much devoured this book in one sitting. Overall I really enjoyed it, Highly Recommend!

When Maggie disappears everyone thinks they know who took her. Seems they should have been looking in another direction. Sheriff Flint Cahill is looking forward to asking Maggie to marry him when she disappears. The story goes in several direction and we get to visit again with Frank and Lottie. They are now PI's and help unravel the complex story line. Even as I suspected from the first that someone unknown had kidnapped Maggie I did not see the connection to another mystery. As always there is a look at another pair who have been a part of this series. There are still three unmarried Cahill bothers so time will tell if that pair make it. As always from B.J. Daniels the mystery in interesting, the romance good and the characters well developed. All wrapped up in a very complex plot.

I received a free copy of the book in return for an honest review.

I haven’t read any of B.J. Daniels book before and after finishing this one I’m beating myself up about that.
This story is something I did not see coming. I have a certain view of cowboys and how they should behave but hot damn this was so not it – and I’m NOT complaining.

Each page you turn pulls you in more and with each step that the characters make it suck’s you in until you're sitting there with book finished in your hands going: What the hell did I just read?!?!

I loved everything about this story: I felt the fear that Flint felt when Maggie went missing. The struggle he had when he's take of the case and couldn't do anything about it – until he had to. The strength they both had to fight through what was going on around to come to their HEA at the end.

If you want suspense mixed with a lot of love – this book is for you!!!

This is a great addition to the Cahill Ranch series. It centers around Flint and Maggie. An intriguing story line. Held my interest from page one to the last page. I look forward to many more in this series.

FINAL DECISION: This might be my favorite B.J. Daniels book I've read. I really liked the combination of the romance and the suspense story. This book is more suspense than romance, but I really liked the "romance in review" way of going through Flint and Maggie's story.

THE STORY: Sheriff Flint Cahill's girlfriend Maggie disappears just as the two are moving in together. Flint knows that his crazy ex-wife must be involved, but Flint is forbidden from being involved in the case. The question is whether or not Maggie will be found in time.

OPINION: This book covers the kidnapping of Maggie. The focus is primarily on the search for what happened to Maggie and Flint trying desperately to find her. As might be expected with B.J. Daniels' stories, there is a strong focus on the suspense and mystery aspects of the story.

But there is also an interesting method of exploring how much Flint and Maggie mean to one another as they are separated. Through flashbacks, thoughts and explanations, the relationship between Flint and Maggie is explored and experienced by the reader. I don't think I've ever read a romance I liked so much where the main characters spend so much time apart.

The drama and suspense works really well here and for readers of the series, quite a few stories are nicely wrapped up by the end.

As a matter of full disclosure, this book isn't a romance in the sense that most people might expect. While the story explores Flint and Maggie's story, they are already together as the book begins and there is quite a bit of their story in the prior books in the series (although reviewed here for new readers).

I just liked the whole sense of the book. It's construction felt different than others I've read and I liked that about it.

WORTH MENTIONING: This book seems to wrap up the overarching storylines from the series so it seems in some way as the end of the series. However, there are a number of characters who are available for their own stories so I hope we see more of them in the future.

CONNECTED BOOKS: COWBOY'S LEGACY is the third book in the Cahill Ranch series. This book can be read as a standalone, but this story has been percolating in the prior two books so reading those will give the background to this one. I think that this book should be read as part of the series to get all the nuances.

STAR RATING: I give this book 4.5 stars.

NOTE: I received an ARC of this book via Netgalley in order to provide a review. I was not required to write a review or to write a positive review. All opinions contained herein are my own.

This review will be published on November 28th.
