Brilliant read. Great story and characters. I loved the cover creepy. 5*.

It is the eve of World War Two when someone attempts to kill Luke Hamilton in Paris. This comes as a great surprise to the lowly clerk in the British Embassy, especially when a stranger saves his life and tells him he must run to save it again. What follows is a trail of action throughout Europe, rather reminiscent of a good John Buchan novel, as Luke attempts to discover why someone wants to kill him.

When I compare this novel to John Buchan it is because I am reminded of that style of early spy/thriller book. Luke Hamilton is an upright (we won't mention the affair with the army officer's wife in the past) englishman of the old school. He seems to always want to do the right thing and save those who are dear to him. He isn't a scandalous rouge, just a nice guy. The characters he meets fall quite nicely into the goodies & the baddies. The frenchman who saves his life is seen to waiver for a while but his true nature shines through!

The book is well written with a plot that stands up well. The action doesn't really stop so there is plenty to keep the reader coming back for more. I did work out most things as the book went along so the twist at the end was of no suprise to me. However, that didn't stop my enjoyment of the book.

A really good read which was entertaining and well written.
