Marked started off well enough. Lucky, the protagonist can see ghosts and does fairly well for herself exposing fake mediums however due to her ability to see ghosts she doesn't really have any friends apart from Kayla agnostic that's been with her since she was young. With the arrival of Jamie, who claims to be a fellow psychic she discovers she's not who she thought she was. Pre-discovery I thought her to be nice enough, perhaps slightly on the bland side but post-discovery I found her to be ungrateful, judgemental and self righteous. I found myself feeling very sorry for Kayla who's been Lucky's friend for years and sacrificed so much for her only to have it thrown back in her face. At one point there's a section in the book where at nearly every Lucky-Kayla interaction where Lucky remarks about what a bitch Kayla is and constantly criticises her and her lack of compassion and what a monster she is for standing up to her father. She can't seem to get over Kayla deceiving her in order to protect her which I find rather strange as she got over Jamie's deception pretty quickly even though his was worse in my opinion. She seems to think that her sister has it in for her in some way which just so logical because someone who protects her all her life will suddenly just decide to kill her just because they fancy it.

Post-discovery Lucky becomes one of those heroines who are just so special that the most powerful brings in the realm just can't help themselves but want to protect her (and also have sex with her). She of course is defender of the weak and those who can't protect themselves (Let"s just forget that the human in question deserved everything that they got), she's the only person that stands up for what's right and has any moral compass at all. I really ended up disliking Lucky and would have greatly preferred to read about Kayla.

A spectacular start to the trilogy. I love the quick paced of the book, I loved all of the characters, I loved the way the world was built up and developing as we went along. Everything about this book was just fantastic, amazing and just brilliant.

I recite a free copy of this book in exchange for a honest review.
This is maybe one of the worst book I read this year.
I found the story flat and boring and I hate the main character!
Lucky is only a spineless woman who can stand the fact that someone decent her but only if he had ABS.
Why should she care about what she want when there is a very sexy demon who choose for her?!
About the plot..
I expect a totally different book, when I understood what this book was about the plot twists that come were clear from the beginning.

Lucky has always been able to see spirits and this gift has made her a bit of a loner. Thankfully ever since she was a young child Lucky has had her best friend, Kayla, looking out for her. When she is asked to investigate some supernatural goings on at her old school Lucky encounters a terrifying demon. Little does she know, this is only the beginning of her problems.

This book starts of as a quirky urban fantasy then becomes a full blown hard fantasy. Personally I preferred the fast paced first half of the book as the story seemed to drag a little in the second half. There isn't really any resolution to the story at the end of the book, leaving it wide open for the sequel. Overall a good read with some great characters, and an adorable dragon, sorry, Drakon.

It is a known fact that a woman whose best friend is invisible to the rest of the world will not have an easy life. Hiding in the shadows and finding modern life problematic Lucky de Salle is not fitting well into the world. Lucky is a psychic and yep, she sees dead people.
Called to intervene in a haunting at her old school Lucky has a nasty encounter with a demon who has a message for her friend Kayla. At the school, she meets Philip Conrad who seems to be showing an unhealthy interest in the demon world. As if this wasn’t intriguing enough another man, Jamie stumbles into her life
Jamie has suffered loss and he too sees dead people. Before she knows it Lucky has invited Jamie to stay and Kayla seems to have her nose permanently out of joint. Nothing is as it seems and Lucky finds that all he previous conceptions about her life, Kayla and the unseen world are to be swept aside.
Making new friends and protectors isn’t easy but it seems making enemies that might kill you is a doddle. Lucky is a good character who at the beginning is full of certainty about how the world works but must adapt fast. She has change forced upon her and values she believes to be unassailable prove to be malleable.
I don’t want to discuss the plot any further as it seems reviews and trailers give too much away to the reader. Suffice to say it is great fun with some excellent character and world building. It’s part one of a trilogy called The Soulseer Chronicles so there is plenty more story to come. This is a fantasy in every sense and it’s a little bit daft but who here doesn’t have a daft fantasy? Lucky is a girl at the start but she finds hidden resources and a power if not quite of the Slayer variety at least a healthy sense of survival and self-worth. These are qualities worth sharing with other humans and a book is as good a place as any to start.

Marked, Sue Tingey

Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews

Genre: Sci-fi and Fantasy, Romance

This novel turned out to be far from what I'd expected. I really enjoyed the beginning of this but....it changed dramatically and once the Underlands were brought in I really wasn't enjoying it.

Parts were interesting, the court intrigue but with all the different daemon descriptions, the twee names of two of her guards, the jealousy between Jamie and Jinx, and then the drakon, who can change size as needed it all began to feel like a YA novel to me, with some pretty urghh torture scenes that seemed to be added for keeping in in the adult genre...

I felt there was a lot going on but not much actually happening, that kind of odd thing when none of the events actually have any real conclusion, where threats are everywhere but none happen, where everyone is urging Lucky to be quiet, go unseen and of course New Girl knows best and does the opposite, but despite the dire predictions its rare anything much results.

The emphasis on sex and her virginity, her shock at the daemon guards of her friend Kayla actually undressing at night, her shock at the inference Kayla is sleeping with her main guard, her constant speculation of the attractiveness or not of the daemons, all began to  feel to me too much like later Laurell Hamilton Anita Blake reads :-(

Lucky becomes very judgmental and Kayla a totally different person to the one we knew, and TBH I'm unsure I like either of them or this world enough to continue.
Sometimes first books try too hard, and a series settles down into a winner for me, but I think this one isn't going to do that.

Stars: Two, just not a series for me I think

Lucky sees dead people. It has made her quite unpopular with the living, who find her gift disturbing. Now Lucky has to follow her best friend Kayla - a spirit (or so she thought) - into the Underland in search of answers. Why is a demon haunting Lucky's old school and sending a message to Kayla that they want her back?

The story is fast-paced and well-written and you are emotionally connected to Lucky and her search from the very beginning. The Underland world that Sue Tingey created is vivid: magical and cruel and wonderous all at the same time; with some decidedly complex laws and customs - especially around the politics of the royal court. There is no doubt that the triangle between Lucky and her protectors: The Guardian and The Deathbringer, is complicated and sexy.

I look forward to reading the installment in Lucky's story. The characters come alive and I felt pulled in to Lucky's world and her growing confusion and frustration, as she navigates through a whole new world and a whole new definition of who she is.

Lucky is a psychic with the ability to see ghosts, something that has always made people look at her a little strangely and made her a bit of an outcast. In fact, her best (and only) friend is a ghost called Kayla who has been by her side for as long as she can remember. Lucky generally tries to keep herself to herself but when she receives a call from her old school about a ghost problem they're having she agrees to help by performing an exorcism. It's only when she gets there and discovers that the problem is actually demon related that Lucky realises she's in over her head and her world is turned upside down when she makes a startling discovery about her best friend. Not only is Lucky now being hunted by a demonic assassin but she finds herself in the middle of a political battle over who gets to rule the Underlands.

Marked is Sue Tingey's debut novel and she really starts her Soulseer Chronicles with a bang, I love discovering new authors and my only disappointment here is that I'm now going to have to wait a year for the next instalment. This is the kind of story that sucks readers in very quickly and you end up completely losing track of time while you're reading. The world building was clever, I enjoyed the contemporary British setting and feel to the beginning of the story but I also loved getting to visit the parallel world of the Underlands. Imagine heaven and hell aren't two places but instead one place combined, a place where demons of all manner roam alongside guardian angels. Not all demons are evil and not all of the angelic creatures are good so it's not always easy to spot friend from foe. This is the world that Lucky finds herself drawn into thanks to her relationship with Kayla. Lucky is completely thrown by everything she discovers, she is confused, shocked and scared but at the same time it is exhilarating getting to explore a new world and she soon realises that she could have a very different life in the Underlands to the lonely existence she had at home. She just has to decide what kind of future she wants.

I really enjoyed the relationship between Lucky and Kayla, they have been friend's for Lucky's entire life but Kayla has been keeping some huge secrets and that really effects the way Lucky sees her. Lucky is initially heartbroken by the way she feels that Kayla has betrayed her and it's not going to be easy for her to get past the lies and untruths she has been told. Their relationship is complicated but there is a strong bond between them and it's obvious that Kayla has Lucky's best interests at heart. There are some other really fantastic side characters in the book too, a particular favourite has to be the dragon Pyrites who was absolutely adorable but I also found myself incredibly amused by Lucky's bodyguards Mr Kerfuffle and Mr Shenanigans.

If you had told me about a potential love triangle before I picked up this book I probably would have been hesitant to read it, I'm so sick to death of that trope that it's starting to spoil books for me, but I have to admit that it is done really well here. Lucky has caught the attention of Guardian Angel Jamie as well as Jinx, the Daemon of Death, and it's very easy to see why they both hold such appeal to her. Jamie and Jinx are almost complete opposites and it's impossible to decide if I prefer the dark and brooding bad boy or the enigmatic angel. In fact I'm really, really, REALLY hoping that she's going to keep them both, there were a few hints that they'd be open to sharing and that's definitely the outcome I'm rooting for!!

Marked is a fantastic start to this new series, it has plenty of action, some great twists, brilliant characters, realistic world building and just a hint of romance. The story is a great mix between urban fantasy and straight up fantasy and I'm looking forward to more of that as the series continues. It's definitely a book I'll be reading again and I'll be eagerly waiting for the next book when it releases next spring.
