A historical romance of the first water. The heroine is a young widowed Duchess and the hero is a newly minted Earl. He has acquired the title as his older brother, the Earl, was killed while saving his life on the battlefield. The story is lusty and poignant. They love each other but both have an aversion to the commitment of marriage. The burning question is can they find away around the emotional baggage they are carrying in abundance.
I have rated this book 4.25 stars and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a well written historical romance.
I received an ARC from Netgalley for my unbiased review.
Loved this book. It seemed to contain lots of different elements, a mystery that was very suspenseful and a romance that was lovely. I will definitely look for the rest of the books in this series.
I received an ARC copy of this book from netgalley.
This is the story about Rose Deverill, Duchess of Roxborough and the love she has for Philip Flagstaff, the new Earl of Cumberland. Browen Evans has written another story with her usual excellent expertist. The descriptions are great and give you the base for the tale. The characters are fun, full bodied and lush with life. The plot brings it all together and weaves them into a concise, smooth and steady paced book. I loved the way Ramsey, Rosie and Drake interacted together. There was danger, intrigue, and a mystery to be solved. I loved the book and very much enjoyed the Libertine Scholars. I received this book from Net Galley and voluntarily review it.
While I did like the book, I also felt that most of it was spent with Rose trying to get Phillip to marry her. Honestly, that became tedious. There were also many times she and /or inadvertently she had others jump to the wrong conclusion about Phillip. The suspense and mystery came closer to end and was wrapped up pretty neatly. And I felt it was a bit too convenient that everything was solved so easily. Why wasn't Elaine's role exposed and what made her turn sides with the enemy? Why did she reveal her mistress secret? That wasn't explained clearly enough for me.
This is a new author for me. I was very impressed with her characters and the storyline. Philip, our hero, was damaged emotionally. After watching his brother, the earl, step in front of him at waterloo to save Philips life, Philip vows to sacrifice his own life emotionally. No wife, no love, no children. He doesn't deserve it.
Rose, our heroine, after being sold off in marriage to a duke 50 years older than her, is a survivor. She endures her marriage, has a son, and then becomes a wealthy widow. They call her a wicked widow, because once her husband dies, she seeks pleasure for herself, vowing never to marry again.
This is where the 2 come together. Can he ever get over the guilt of his brother's death? Can she commit to one man again?
Loved the story, loved the ending. I would definitely recommend this book and read this author again,.
Bronwen Evans never fails to deliver. A Love to Remember is the seventh book in the Disgraced Lords series and is as exciting and enchanting as those that went before it. This Regency romance has drama, suspense and a rich love story. Rose, The Duchess of Roxborough has created a reputation for herself, thus ensuring that she remains a widow, having had a miserable first marriage. Her only reward is her pride and joy, her young son Drake. Rose has been in love with Philip, the Earl of Cumberland since she was fifteen. Only Philip was never meant to be the Earl, but rather his older brother who died on the battlefield saving his sorry hide. The attraction between Philip and Rose engulfs them and they launch into a torrid love affair on the understanding that neither of them wants marriage. However, circumstances change and the parameters shift, leaving Rose heartbroken as Philip remains steadfast to his vow never to marry. Rose is not aware of the fact that she has enemies and is shocked when they make their move, putting her and young Drake in danger. When the threat to Rose increases, Philip finds that he can no longer remain passive and has to make a choice. A Love to Remember is emotive, exciting and kept my interest the whole way through. When the enemy is revealed it is as shocking to the reader as to Rose herself, and one kept in suspense right to the end.
Engaged me and didn't want to put it down because I wanted to see what happened. The heroine truly saved the hero. Love conquers all.
This is Rose and Philip's story. She was married off young to an old Duke. The Duke dies and she is free. She has been in love with Philip for years. They have an affair for years. She is hoping he will propose. He. Does not feel he is worthy because his brother the Earl died protecting him. Their are many twists and turns. A kidnapping and an attempted murder happen and an accidental pregnancy happens before Philip realizes they should be together. It was an enjoyable fast read.
Rose Deverill, a wealthy widow, has been having an affair with Phillip Flagstaff, the Earl of Cumberland, since the death of his brother, Robert, two years ago. Rose and Phillip have each sworn never to get married to anyone, but as their relationship grows closer, Rose realizes that she now wishes to get married . . . to Phillip. However, Phillip has his own reasons why he has vowed never to get married, leaving Rose to try to figure out what has prompted Phillip to make such a vow.
In the interim, as in the previous books in this series, there is a “villain” who has designs on Rose, placing her in imminent danger. Phillip will have to draw on the expertise of the Libertine Scholars to help him in rescuing Rose from this malefactor.
I was curious as to what form of adversity would plague Rose and Phillip since the blackmailer who had previously tormented the Libertine Scholars was no longer going to be the source of conflict. I need not have concerned myself since A Love to Remember is jam-packed with action, suspense, intrigue and, of course, romance, reminiscent of the trials and tribulations that the Libertine Scholars and their (now) wives faced in the past.
I like the way Bronwen Evans details how Rose and Phillips’ relationship gradually changes while, at the same time, letting us see what is troubling Phillip, to the detriment of that relationship. A very enjoyable and fast read!
I received a copy of this novel from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review!
Philip and Rose kick up the romance and sensuality in this book right from the first chapter. I really liked both their characters and was rooting for them to overcome their struggles towards a HEA. The mystery in this book is tepid at best but it was fun to meet the the rest of the characters from the Disgraced Lords series. This is book seven in the series. I really enjoyed Philip and Rose's interactions with the secondary characters and enhanced the book's appeal for me. I also adored Drake and hope he gets his own book in the future.

I received a copy of this title from the publisher for an honest review. First, although this considered book 7 of the Disgraced Lords series, it easily works as a stand alone unlike the previous books in the series that contained an overarching story. Philip Flagstaff is a younger son who enlisted in the military and found himself fighting in the Napoleonic war, but he never expected his older brother, the Earl of Cumberland, to join the military as well. After his brother sacrifices himself to save him, Philip unexpectedly finds himself earl and dealing (or not dealing) with massive grief over his brother's death. Determined not to have an heir, Philip falls into a relationship with Rose, the widowed Duchess of Roxborough who is determined to be enjoy her freedom and never marry. Two years later, Rose and Philip have fallen into a comfortable relationship and spend as much time together as their lives allow, but Rose no longer wants to avoid marriage. She's fallen for Philip and wants to create a life that consists of more than stolen moments. Rose and Philip have to deal with a mystery surrounding her young son the Duke of Roxoborogh's safety. I liked Rose and found her determination to help Philip overcome his guilt and realize that his brother wouldn't have wanted him to spend his life without love and a family of his own. Philip was likeable and his feelings of guilt were very understandable; I thought Ms. Evans did a good job of not over playing this aspect of the story to the point where I was frustrated with his behavior. I was in a bit of a reading slump when I first started this title, but this book engaged me and I read it in very short order.
A Love to Remember ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️written by Bronwen Evans
(The Disgraced Lords #7)
Rose Deverill was the widow of the late Duke of Roxborough. She was married off to this elderly man at a very young age and after his death she swore she would never marry again. She was wealthy enough to just take on lovers and live independently. She was perfectly happy being known in the ton as the Wicked Widow". After several years of her escapades, when she attends the funeral of Philip Flagstaff's brother Robert she rekindles her romance with Philip.
Philip as the second son now becomes the Earl of Cumberland and feels he is so undeserving of the title. Also, he feel responsible for his brothers death since his entering the army caused his brother to enter as well and died protecting him in battle. Upon Robert's death Philip promised to never marry and have children. When Philip begins his romance with Rose they are both in agreement of no marriage just to enjoy each other's company.
Miss Evans certainly writes some scorching romance scenes and you could certainly see this romance proceeding to the next level of marriage. They are each other's confidants in almost everything. Both parties care deeply for one another this is where I grew a bit frustrated with Philip. I did feel he definitely knew Rose wanted to marry and he professed his undying feelings but no marriage. I believe as a reader we understood his conflicts and life can't always have a HEA but Philip just got on my nerves.
I will certainly remain a great fan of this series but I have to say this one Lord I did not care for his indecisiveness. He was a waffler. He wanted his cake and eat it. He was to me the weak link in this disgraced lord series.
All that being said, I gave this a five star review because this author was able to certainly get a rise out of my emotions during this read. She is at the top of her game. I received this book from Netgalley for and honest review.
Disgraced Lords #7
Duchess Rose Deverill survived her marriage to the Duke of Roxborough and was determined never to remarry...until she was reunited with the Earl of Cumberland, Philip Flagstaff....her teenage crush.
Philip is also anti-marriage after his brother Robert followed him to Waterloo to protect him, only to die himself.
But the fates have something else in mind. After they break off the relationship, Philip realizes he can't live without her.....after attempts on both her son Drake's and her own life.
Steamy and sweet at the same time, this is a wonderful historical romp. Loved it!
I requested and received an ARC from NetGalley.
I've just gotten back from a little trip to England to visit my old friends from The Ton, you know, the Libertine Scholars, and do I have some juicy gossip to share. It seems Philip Flagstaff, the Earl of Cumberland, has been having an affair with Her Grace, Lady Rose Deverill, the Wicked Widow. It's a perfect arrangement because neither one is interested in matrimony. Rose had a terrible first marriage, forced to marry an older man who was, shall I say, not very considerate of her "needs". The only good thing that came from the relationship was her son, Drake. Of course, she did inherit the estate (her father wasn't a total fool when handing her over to a distasteful elderly husband) and her son will be the Duke of Roxborough when he reaches his majority. In the meantime The Marquis of Kirkwood is his guardian, watching out for his interests. Luckily, the kind man has pretty much stayed out of her business, but she expects he soon will be making some demands. After all, it's no secret that Philip was seen dancing with the current popular debutant and ignoring her at the latest fete. If their affair is truly over, Kirkwood might think it time for her to settle down, especially since she's only twenty six and still lovely.
It's not that she and Philip don't get along, they do very well in the boudoir together, more than okay. It's just that Philip is still grieving for his brother, Robert, who sacrificed his life at the Battle of Waterloo in order to protect his "little brother". It's Philip's fault that Robert is dead so he doesn't feel he's entitled to the title he inherited. Philip has been a screwup all his life and he doesn't believe he's deserves any happiness, especially not with the beautiful and charming Rose. No, marriage is out, not to Rose, not to anyone. Let the succession line fall to his younger brother, a clone of Robert and more worthy of the honor.
Unfortunately, Philips sister, Lady Portia (remember how she was kidnapped and sold to a sultan's harem in Alexandria, rescued in the nick of time by Philip and her future husband, Lord Greyson Devlin) is none too happy about her brother's behavior. The others think he's a fool as well. Then when he showed up at Serena's dinner party with another woman, they practically attacked him. Poor Rose had to deal with this public display of humiliation.
It will take a miracle to shake some sense into that man. Or perhaps a disaster that needs the help of those six friends (and their wives) to resolve. I'm curious to see how it all works out. There are so many rumors, but that would be telling.
A Love to Remember by Bronwen Evans is a continuation of the Libertine Scholars saga. Now that Arend has his happy ending and the mystery woman that was trying to destroy their lives has been captured, the six men and their wives are living in wedded bliss raising the numerous children who seem to come in waves. However, Philip's life has not been resolved. When his brother, the seventh Libertine Scholar was killed in battle, the others vowed to look out for his wellbeing. After all, his sister is married to Greyson and family is family. Rose, Lady Portia's best friend, is also an honorary member of the group. Plus Rose's son is best friends with Henry, a young boy under Sebastian and Beatrice's care, so Evans is obligated to "tie up the loose ends".
I was excited to touch base with all the characters from the first six book in the The Disgraced Lords series. Since each of the storylines overlapped in some way, there's only been about two years between the beginning tale and this book. While A Love to Remember can serve as a stand alone, reading the other novels will give a better perspective on the wide cast of characters.
As enjoyable as I found this novel, which had a twist or two in the plot, I was disappointed that the author felt the need to be so repetitive. Yes, Rose was in love and wanted to marry Philip. Yes, Philip felt honor bound to never marry as a penance for his brothers death, but how many times did we need to hear this? Too many times if you ask me or enough to detract from the whole. Once again, Evans needs to tighten up the plot and leave out the miscellaneous - more libertine scholars, less introspection. She did, however, include some juicy dialogue, as the two lovers exchanged some sexy reparte.
As a reminder, lovers of Regency Romances who like accuracy in the details from this era should avoid this series. However, those who like a good romp with a happily ever after ending should dig right in. Three and a half stars.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review. This review also appears on my blog, Gotta Read.
A Love to Remember is a breath of fresh air in the historical romance genre. A well written, historical romance balanced with sweetness, heat, and intrigue and lead with my favorite kind of unconventional heroine. A strong-willed and independent widow, Rose engages in brief affairs after being forced into marriage with an elderly man and widowed at a young age. Rose's childhood crush and her best friend's brother, Philip, is consumed with his grief for his elder brother and feels inadequate to replace him as Earl. Rose reaches out to him in comfort and thus begins their two year affair. Stubbornness and grief interfere as Rose decides she wants more and Philip refuses to change their relationship. Danger and intrigue have a way of bringing together what is meant to be leading to a breathtaking HEA. My voluntary review is based upon a review copy from Netgalley.
Rose and Colin are good characters who seem to just fit eachother so some of the angst between the two made me very impatient. A good book overall
Every once in a while you come across a book that compels you to read it beginning to end- you connect and you cannot stop reading. This book was one of those for me. I started reading it at 11:00 pm - to just start it- but finally finished it at 3:20 am. Whew! Rose and Philip's story is wonderful.
Rose is a woman who has been used and is now wanting to be I. Control of her life. She was forced by her father to marry a man old enough to be her grandfather - at 18 years of age! He did it to raise his influence or status in the ton- with no real care for his daughter's feelings. He did her one kindness when he financially secured her future in the marriage contract. So she begins the story as a wicked (and rich) widow- who has just discovered her sensuality and the fun of sex. When her old husband dies -she swears she will never marry again. She has a son and money - so, what more could she want?
Philip was the second son and finds himself inheriting an earldom bc his brother lost his life at Waterloo, trying to save Philip.
Philip had joined the military as a means to run away from his problems and mistakes. His older brother cares about his family - all of them. While he never asked Philip why he joined, he decides to join the military with Philip on order to save his brother from another one of philip's bungles. And he does save Philip - literally- she. He takes a bayonet intended for Philip and dies on the battlefield.
The funeral was deafening in its pain. Rose, a woman who had grown up in love with Philip, encourages him to leave and shows him love and respect - Totally opposite of what he perceived from the rest of the people at his brother's funeral. They begin an affair- and both find themselves wrestling with what is happening in their hearts and what theiy have pledged to never do--love and marry.
But sometimes the heart wants what it wants- unless it can't have it.
Both Rose and Philip have sworn off marriage, but their hearts don't agree. But sometimes the brain and the heart don't agree. An excellent book! Read it.
The theme of this story is similar to others I've read in this genre. There really was no suspense or mystery and while there is a love story, I just couldn't sympathize with either Rose's or Philip's stubbornness to hold on to the past so tightly.
