Detective novel with a difference – recommended to all

Part of a series about private investigator, David Raker, this novel deals with him attempting to find out as much as he can about Richard, an amnesiac, who is trying to find out who he is. Raker's investigations take him to an island in the South Atlantic where the mystery unfolds. The plot involves murder, corruption, theft and should interest anyone who enjoys a well-conceived idea.
It's a page-turner, not overlong, original and quite clever.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Having read none of the other books in the series I was initially worried that I would struggle to pick up the thread with this being the 8th book in this series but there was enough back story to be able to read this as a standalone.
But saying that i will defiantly be reading the rest of the books in the series, in order this time!!
It is certainly a unique plot, with enough twists and turns to keep you hooked.
I will be recommending this book, and the other books in the series to my book club :-)

This book was really different in that the 'missing person' was not missing physically, but was missing in that he had amnesia and had no idea who he was. A story which kept you intrigued throughout.

This is the 8th book in a series of books, so I feel I now need to go and read parts 1-7. That said, I picked up quite of a lot of information about David Raker, one of the main characters of this book and one whom I suspect is so in the other 7. Raker is a specialist in missing persons and he is contacted by a man, Richard Kite, with amnesia to try to find out who he is. Raker sets out on his journey to find out where Kite is from and why does nobody know him? Then there is a dead body of a woman found on a railway line in London, two years before, how does she connect to Kite, or does she have any connection whatsoever. The reader is taken along on this journey, plot twists come and go, some expected and some not.

I enjoyed this book a lot.

I received a free e-arc from the publisher via Netgalley.

This is such an interesting thriller! There are so many twists and turns in the plot that it’s so hard to guess what’s going to happen until the main character starts putting things together himself.

It doesn’t even matter that this is part of a series - there’s not any backstory that you need to understand, no references to previous cases or unresolved plot lines from previous novels, so you can jump right in and enjoy the story.

I really liked the way the author shaped this story, and I will definitely be looking for the other books in this series.

The twists and turns in this book make you not want to put it down and keeps you wanting more. I would strongly recommend.

I found the story too bland and prosaic, and it did not sustain my interest beyond a couple of chapters.

The title and idea behind trying to find out someone's forgotten past was interesting. However, the book turns out to be just another crime Story. It's ok, if that is what you want, but I think they missed an apportunity here.

This book is brilliant, gradually building up into the crescendo. The nearer I got to the end of the book the more I wanted to keep reading it. I didn'the want to put it down but I also didn'the want it to end. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

This is the first time I have read anything by Tim Weaver and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was well written, with a good plot and perfectly paced. David Raker is a character I need to get to know better which is why I went straight to the library and borrowed the first two books in the series!

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the review copy

I enjoyed most of this book - didn't realise it was part of a series and actually, it stood on its own quite well. A point did come though where there I felt that there were too many characters and the events seemed too coincidental.

I am missing By Tim weaver.
When a young man wakes up bruised and beaten, with no memory of who he is or where he came from, the press immediately dub him 'The Lost Man'. Naming himself Richard Kite, he spends the next ten months desperately trying to find out who he is. But despite media appeals and the efforts of the police, no one knows him. Richard's last hope may be private investigator David Raker - a seasoned locator of missing people. But Raker has more questions than answers. Who is Richard Kite? Why does no one know him? And what links him to the body of a woman found beside a London railway line two years ago? Could Richard be responsible for her death - or is he next?
A good read with good characters. Little slow in places. 4*. Netgalley and penguin UK- Michael Joseph.

While I enjoyed this, I thought the pace flagged around the middle. The setting was intriguing but took a while to get there. Not my favourite in the series, but a good read.

I am Missing by Tim Weaver
This book is about a man who, after a possible beating, is found on a beach having Lost his memory.
After trying to find out who he is he turns to David Raker, a private detective , who specialises in missing people. Although in this case the person is not missing but his memory of that person.
This novel is number 8 in a series. I had not read anything by this author so wondered if it would be a problem. It wasn't. A great read, great plot, brilliant atmosphere and tremendous descriptive writing, felt you were there in many parts. Kept me hooked throughout. Will read more in this series.

I Am Missing by Tim Weaver

Private Investigator, David Raker, is renowned for his expertise in finding missing people, but when he is called to take on a new case, he is bemused to learn that the person who is commissioning him, Richard, is the person who is ‘missing’.

Richard has dissociative amnesia - a condition where the person affected has no memory of who he is, not even his surname, age, family, friends, nothing. He had been found nine months earlier unconscious, battered and bruised on the Hampshire coast.

The regional press had covered his story along the south coast in an effort to find out who he was, calling him the ‘Lost Man’, but the publicity had provoked no recognition from the public. Not a single person had come forward. The police investigation had also drawn a blank - he was in no danger nor posed a threat to anyone, so his case was relegated to a drawer. Without a national insurance number he was lost to the system - employers couldn't hire him because he couldn't pay tax, neither was he able to sign on, or claim housing benefit. Likewise, therapy and hypnosis in an attempt to lever his memories to the surface had proved futile.

David is virtually faced with a blank page or five incomplete lines on a page, to be precise. All Richard knows about himself is that his name is Richard, he knows how to swim, to drive and that he spent part of his childhood near to a beach and lastly he has a vague memory of a TV show - his list “a short, meagre testament to what his life had become”.

David starts by trying to pick through the police report, but pretty quickly he realises just how difficult it's going to be to crack this case, which is so different to any other he'd taken on before. When he contemplates how little information he has to go on, he gets more than a nagging feeling that this has been a big mistake. Whether or not it's his professional pride or the empathy he feels for Richard’s predicament, but he's not one to give up easily and he wants to give Richard his life back.

David’s strength lies in his meticulous and systematic detective work and as soon as he hones in on some odd facts, he follows them through whether or not they turn out to be red herrings. Soon there is one thread that his intuitive detective mind tells him to follow up on. It's the discovery of the body of a woman, who like Richard, has not been reported as missing. As one link bafflingly leads to another, David, like a dog with a bone is not about to let it go and, embarking on a long, convoluted journey, is led into extreme danger. Because now he is pretty sure he is onto something. Because he's travelled 7000 miles. And he isn't going back without the truth.

‘I Am Missing’ is book 8 in the David Raker detective series, but works perfectly well as a standalone. It's quite a long and complex plot, multi-dimensional with several storylines, whose links become apparent as the story unfolds. I liked David’s ‘voice’ as the narrator, quiet, patient, sad and intimate in the sense that you could hear his brain ticking. I found parts of the story atmospheric, in particular I could visualise the eerie, bleak, fictional Empress Islands, which actually made me feel cold reading about them.

I enjoyed reading this detective story, which held my attention most of the way through and my only criticisms were firstly, that it was a little long winded. Secondly, I struggled with my suspension of disbelief with a couple of the characters, who were almost arch villains, especially when they were about to kill David, but went to the trouble of telling him all the bad things they'd done first and explaining why. However, I was sufficiently engaged to be swept along on this slightly outlandish adventure and curious to learn how it would all unfold.

Many thanks to Netgalley, Penguin UK - Michael Joseph and to Tim Weaver for an advance copy in return for an honest review.

This book started off very promising as a man with no memory of who he is or what his life consists of approaches a private investigator to uncover his truth. The book has many dimensions and characters and travels from Southampton to the Empress Islands. A good read but seemed a bit far fetched at times. Nonetheless, definitely worth a read.

This is my first Tim Weaver read but even though this is the 8th in the David Raker series it worked well as a standalone.

The premise was fascinating and really drew me in, this, a missing person case was commissioned by the actual missing person. Richard Kite is suffering from Dissociative Amnesia and remembers nothing of his life prior to being washed up in Southampton battered and bruised and hires David Raker to match all the missing pieces. With only the memory of a beach and a television programme from his childhood Raker sets about doing the do and uncovers layer upon layer of intrigue.

A thorough and well executed thriller with much to applaud, it was, however in my opinion longer than necessary. Thanks to Netgalley for providing an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

This was a missing person mystery with a real twist.
At times it was very coincidental but overall it was a good read.
