This book held a lot of promise, strongly reminiscent of a modern feminist retelling of "The Yellow Wallpaper." Neiderhoffer built tension spectacularly throughout the novel. In the middle third, the pages were practically electric. However, the writing tore the plot apart. There was an excessive amount of telling instead of showing, which made it difficult for the characters and some of the scenes to come off the page or feel real. There was some fairly heavy-handed writing and references to modern events (such as Donald Trump's misogyny or the BIll Cosby case) that felt forced in.

The plot was good. The author can create an aura of paranoia really really well. But he writing about the mundane, the writing the novel needed to fall back on to maintain the plot, fell apart.

Though I liked the book, I made the decision at the time I finished not to review it on my site. Maybe in the future I will include it in a book list post or another article.

Fun domestic thriller in the "Who is my husband really" vein, but unbelievable at times. Goes well with "The Last Mrs. Parrish" and "The Wife Between Us."

While this book kept my interest and I did finish, I didn't really love it. The plot at times did not seem to flow well, which made it a little hard to read. The story however is unique and I think that's part of what kept me engrossed. I do think it did a great job at mimicking our societies tendency to victim blame.

Cass is married to Ryan. They have three children - two from her previous marriage and one with Ryan. Cass thought Ryan was her knight in shining armor. But soon after the baby is born, strange little things start to happen to Cass. She begins to think Ryan is trying to poison her. To save herself and her children, she must figure out exactly what is going on. Will she live long enough to discover the truth?

I must admit to having a love hate relationship with Cass. One minute I'm thinking - you go girl! And the next I'm thinking - are you stupid? I will give her credit for her perseverance. She is not going to give up until she determines what Ryan is doing to her and why.

I did enjoy the suspense. I thought the story occasionally lagged a little. It was intriguing enough for me to want to finish and I'm glad I stayed with it. The last half of the book is when it became a real page turner!

I received this from St. Martin's Press via Netgalley.

Cass Connor never thought that her life would be this good again. Her first husband passed away after an ugly battle with cancer, leaving her with two young children. She then met Ryan Connor. Their passion and chemistry were undeniable, plus her two young children absolutely adored Ryan. Now they have been married for three years, have added a young son to their family, and have moved across the country. Things are a lot less passionate as Cass and Ryan are dealing with the everyday stressors of three children, two careers, and living thousands of miles away from family. Cass starts to notice that things are not right with Ryan, she catches him in some white lies and suspects that he is having an affair. And then she starts to get sick. Physical symptoms that leave her weak, ill, and out of her mind with worry. She just knows that she is being poisoned by her husband. Or is she? How can she prove it? How can she keep herself and her children safe from the monster she married? Is Ryan the monster or is she?

Poison is a psychological thriller of the highest caliber. At first, Cass and Ryan seemed so normal. They seem like every other married couple out there and I really like Cass. When Cass starts to exhibit signs of poisoning I was not sure that I believed her. Ryan does a really good job of convincing the reader that it is all in her head. A really good job. I even thought that maybe she was pregnant and was having "pregnancy brain" in the form of paranoia. Cass has one friend and that is Nora who had questioned Ryan's behavior from almost the beginning. Because Nora was dissing Ryan from the beginning I almost wondered if she was the one having the affair with Ryan. Cass soon starts to trust their quirky neighbor. He helps her install security cameras and seems so solid that I glad she had him. But, I think what this book proves, more than anything, is that you can't trust anybody but yourself. -- CLICK HERE FOR SPOILERS

Bottom Line - Galt Niderhoffer has written one of those novels that keep the reader on the edge of their seats from the very first pages. There are so many twists and turns that it is hard to keep up at times, but stick with it, the end makes it all worth it.

It's so hard to write a review about a thriller without revealing too much. You want to ensure the next reader isn't clued into the twists and turns of the story. This was a page-turner. I needed to know the next stunning event. I was riveted. However, the ending was strange. I felt it ended abruptly without suspense. It was almost confusing in some respects. While the protagonist was sympathetic, there came a point where I couldn't believe some of her actions. I didn't receive the satisfying conclusion I'd hoped. I was disappointed. Yet, the buildup was great. The story was crafted well but I couldn't get past the ending.

I can't say I'm a particular fan of this author's writing style but, that being said, the story line was fascinating enough to pull me in. Wirh just enough little twists, this book kepr me guessing throughout.

I really tried to give Poison a try. I thought I would enjoy it because I love domestic thrillers with a psychological twist but I just couldn't. I felt this story to drag on and I couldn't really keep my eyes glued to the pages like I was hoping. It was defiantly a slow-burn but the plot makes you want it to be super fast-paced and intense.

I would defiantly check out more from this author though!

Casa has three children and is a professor of journalism. She and her husband Ryan are living just outside of Seattle; New York transplants trying to make Seattle home.

Casa still mourns the loss of her first husband Jason though she has a good life with Ryan and they have one child together. Life is good until it’s not.

Galt Niederhiffer’s POISON is a psychological thriller. It is worth a read for being timely and well researched.

I DNF'd this book I just couldn't get into it at the time although it is one that I may go back to later as I think it was me and not the book. I wish I didn't have to leave a star rating.

Cass Connor is a strong, successful woman and mother who hasn’t had the best luck in life. A widow and single mother, she finds love again with a charming and passionate architect, Ryan. Together, they move their family from the east coast to an upscale Seattle suburb where Cass knows no one. She has her job–teaching journalism at the University of Washington–and her children. At first, she feels like between her children, her husband, and her job, this is enough to sustain her. But slowly the shine of her passionate marriage begins to dull. Suddenly, Cass begins to question everything.

Evidence that Ryan isn’t everything Cass thought he was begins to grow. Between hair found in their shower drain that isn’t hers and veiled threats about custody of their son, Cass becomes sure of one thing: her husband is trying to kill her. Poison isn’t just a reference to what Ryan is physically doing to Cass, however. Niederhoffer builds a situation that highlights how easy verbal abuse and gaslighting can cause someone to second guess themselves, and how easy it can discredit someone. Whether Ryan will get away with actually killing his wife isn’t the only terrifying part of this book: it’s whether or not Cass can get anyone–including her parents–to believe what she’s saying. To help her, and her children, get out of a volatile situation.

A slow-burning literary thriller, Niederhoffer keeps the reader at the edge of their seat up until the very end. Poison is for fans of B.A. Paris’ The Breakdown and The Girl on the Train.

I've kind of been on a psychological thriller genre reading binge lately and Poison is one of the best ones I've read recently. This book had me so on edge and fearful for the main character. Her husband is a conniving evil man and she's a complacent victim, until she's not.

There are so many twists and turns and just when you think you know what's going on, the author takes the story and the characters in a different direction. The people you thought you could trust, aren't the people that you think they are.

Poison is a roller-coaster ride to the very end!

Poison by Galt Niederhoffer was a quick-read---I didn't want to put it down. The novel follows a wife and mother as she navigates a rocky marriage and realizes that her husband is poisoning her; sadly, despite her attempts to report her suspicions, she finds herself without an ally or help from those who should be on her side. Overall, I loved this book and look forward to reading other works from this author.

Poison by Gail Niederhoffer is the story of a seemingly perfect family that begins to unravel. Although they seem to have everything, their story is secretly cruel and vindictive. While the author had some interesting plot ideas, the plot moved too slowly for me to be a successful psychological thriller. The point of view is written in third person but it feels so impersonal and makes it hard to understand the characters well. Okay book, but not great. I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher. These opinions are my own.

Cass was widowed with two children. All of that changed when she met Ryan, within a year they were married with a baby of their own. As times goes by they have moved states and Cass has distanced herself from her family and friends. Cass notices that Ryan's behavior has changed and after a night of drinking he admits he is going to kill her. Cass decides to fight for herself, who has become violently and constantly ill, and her kids. Is everything in her head or is Ryan truly a bad guy?

This book was full of twists and turns. I read it in one day because I wanted to see how it would end,
