Not a bad book, but I am a little disappointed because I gave the author's other book (Evelyn, After) 4 stars and this one was not as good from my POV.

There were certainly things I liked about this novel. I liked how the relationships between the main character (Hannah) and her sisters (Rachel and Becky) felt authentic. The author also did a good job with creating a subtly ominous atmosphere in the Big Sur area, which I enjoyed because I was born and raised in California. I also liked Hannah's age because it was older than we usually see in mystery/thrillers, I believe she was in her mid-forties if I remember correctly. In addition to her age, I enjoyed the fact that Hannah did not want kids and made no apologies for it, which is a narrative that is important to our society and needs to be more prevalent.

However, I had a hard time connecting with Hannah as a protagonist. The emphasis on her being different, supposedly an outsider/more wild than her peers and family... It felt teenager-angsty, and this immaturity seemed to directly oppose her age. This theme of her wanting to figure out why she is the way she is occurred throughout the book and I found this character motivation to be repetitive and boring.

Finally, while the author's writing is strong enough to keep me reading, I didn't find the plot or twists to be exciting. The build up was slow and then the pay off did not seem proportionate.

Good descriptive story, with strong characters, I was invested in the story from start to finish. It was emotional and heart wrenching at times. Very enjoyable. Highly recommend.

Many thanks to Victoria Helen stone and Netgalley who provided me with a copy of this book. I chose to read it and give a voluntary and unbiased review.

When I started this book it made me question what it? what if I found myself in that situation Hannah found herself in, what would I do with that information? This is a story of one persons search of discovery; who was she, who is she? The quest for her identity take Hannah to a place that she begins to wonder if she really wanted to be at; what she finds there makes her question everything she knew about her entire life. Will she be able to uncover all the secrets and live with everything that she finds, or will it destroy everything?
What a heart wrenching story and so amazing. Thank you Victoria Helen Stone.

I really enjoyed this book. I could so relate to Hannah and feeling like she just didn't fit. Great story with throwback to the 60s and 70s. The authors writing had me feeling kike I was there at the cabin In the redwoods area.
