I really enjoyed this book which was set in different time periods with two separate accounts of what had happened to end a once happy relationship. Were their assumptions right or wrong ? there seems to have been many secrets untold.

The beginning of this book started out well with a lot of suspense and the wish to keep reading. I found the ending to be kind of a let down and the more explanations were given for Simon's behavior the less I wanted to keep reading. All though Catherine is a likeable character that you root for Simon had no positive qualities and his wish at the end to confide everything to Catherine was something I didn't care for.

This is the second John Marrs book I’ve read and again I really enjoyed it. He sure tells a great story! We learn about the mysterious and sudden disappearance of Catherine’s husband, Simon, from both their points of view, and Marrs swings between the present and the past. But at no point is it confusing – instead Marrs uses these mechanisms to gradually reveal what really happened all those years ago – and the events that have unfolded since. We’re told early on that the couple had lost their youngest child some time before Simon’s disappearance. Marrs only explains the circumstances around this at the end. While he doesn’t belabour the death, I got the feeling early on that the question of what really happened would be vitally important to the story – and this added to the suspense I felt while reading this book. Much as I did while reading The One, I felt as though I was getting several great stories for the price of one as I read this book. Thank you for the opportunity of reading this.

What a great book. Well written. Really admired the way the author as a man was able to be so sympathetic in his views from the female perspective. Another book that I just didn't want to finish.

One of those novels which is difficult to put down – ‘just a few more pages before I sleep’. 

Since I read it, news (and not so new) stories on the same theme keep jumping out on me. Men mysteriously disappear and their abandoned wives eventually have them declared dead so they and their children can move on with their lives. ‘When you Disappeared’ has a then-and-now approach to the story which gradually fills in a span of 28 years.

The people are multi-faceted and real with the minutiae of their lives bringing them into clear focus without being mundane – shockingly far from mundane at times! The twists of the plot were a little complex for me so I occasionally needed to go back to an earlier part. For everyone keen on psychological thrillers this book will be a real hit.

Brilliant! Loved it from beginning to end! The story is intense, compelling, and completely unpredictable! I thought the twists and turns where quite in the style of the master Hitchcock himself! The pace and flow are perfection and you won't be bored! I wasn't expecting the surprising and harrowing end!
