This memoir by Reza Pakravan tells the story of when he and his buddy Steven Pawley decided to make an 11,000 mile trek from Nordkapp, Norway (on the shores of the Arctic Ocean) to Cape Town, South Africa. More of a personal reflection than a cycling or sports book, this great read tells of the many obstacles the two men faced - fatigue, politics, mechanical issues with the bikes, malaria and roadblocks are just a few of them. There are some poignant moments - the best one comes when Reza shares fruit candy with an emaciated African boys. The friendship between Reza and Steven is severely tested, but endures. The journey began as an attempt to break a Guiness world record - this review won't reveal if it happens, but like the old saying goes, it isn't the result but the journey that is memorable. That is the case for this book as well.
