J.D. Robb gives us this re-issued futuristic mystery with Eve Dallas and Roarke. Even though it is number 46 in her Death series, I enjoyed it just as much as when I first read it in 2017. Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for this eARC. My review is totally voluntary.

This is #46 of 70+ in the Lieutenant Eve Dallas (AKA In Death) series. A woman is stabbed with an ice pick while watching Psycho in a theater. As Eve begins her investigation, a mystery writer comes forward and says the murder appears to be a recreation of one she wrote in one of her books. Eve delves into the mystery series and discovers an earlier homicide also seems to have been influenced by this author’s writing. Eve, her wealthy husband, and her colleagues race against time to decipher the clues and save the next victim based on the books.

I have wanted to try a book by prolific writer J.D. Robb (Nora Roberts) for a while. My bad is that I didn’t realize this is set in the future in the 21st century. Despite not being a fan of futuristic themes, I enjoyed this book and coming to it in the middle of the series was not a problem. The clever plot held my attention and I liked the bits of humor throughout. While I could have done without the romantic scenes between Eve and her husband, overall this was an entertaining, suspenseful read.

JD Robb's In Death series continues to.shine. Dark in Death is book 46 in the series, released in 2018, and it's amazing how easily it is to jump into past books in the series.

Dark in Death starts with the death of a young woman at a movie theater. An author recognizes the scenario, and brings up an earlier killing as well. With the pattern established, Dallas and Peabody are hot on the trail of a killer who is following a book series. This was a slower read for me than others in the series, but still an enjoyable break in my days.

The In Death series is easy to jump into as a stand alone read or in order. Great series and writing.

The Eve and Roarke books are addictive. Try to read just one. Try not to eagerly await the release of the next one and be thrilled with any excerpts you can find. Eve has barely recovered from everything she went through in the previous book, Echoes in Death, plus of course a little getaway with the sexy Roarke, when there is another brutal case for her, Peabody and the rest of the crew we know and love to solve.

Exciting, riveting page-turner. Don’t wait, read it now. I voluntarily leave this review. All opinions are my own.

I absolutely loved Dark in Death, just like I usually do with this series! Eve Dallas is one of my favorite characters, and it’s always so much fun following her investigations. This one had a really unique twist with the killer copying scenes from mystery novels, which made the case feel fresh and suspenseful. I also enjoyed the mix of crime solving and personal moments with Roarke and Galahad,it’s those little touches that make the series feel like coming home. The pacing was great, and I liked how the tension built as Eve and her team raced to stop the next murder. The plot was clever, and the killer’s motive was creepy and interesting. I also liked seeing an author involved in the case. If you’re a fan of the series, you’ll definitely enjoy this one too. It’s another solid, entertaining mystery from J.D. Robb.

A gripping and engaging thriller with an intriguing storyline as Lieutenant Dallas and team race to stop a killer intent on working their way through an author’s backlist and re-enacting the murders in the books. The overall story set a fast pace with each stage of the investigation laid out with a host of familiar characters all playing their parts as they continued to develop as the series progresses. I enjoyed the inclusion of Quilla who will hopefully appear again as I can’t wait to see not only her character develop under the mentorship of Nadine, but also how Nadine handles the responsibility. Will she keep things professional between them, or will we see a quasi-maternal/big sister relationship develop between them especially now she in love. With the customary dark humour and banter provided by the detectives of the bullpen, Dark in Death was a strong addition to the ‘In Death’ series.

A big thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This was first published in 2018, not sure why I just got it, but I am okay with just receiving it. This is a huge series with over 60 books. I believe this is num er 46. They read great as stand alones. I really enjoyed this one, as the killer is duplicating murders from a specific authors books. The usual gang is included and fun ensues. Totally worth a read. This series is terrific!! 4.5 stars

The 46th outing for this gritty detective series set in the future.

Detective Eve Dallas is called out when a woman is found murdered in the cinema whilst watching the re-run of a classic film, stabbed in the back of the neck with an ice-pick. Her friend had only stepped away for a couple of minutes to answer a page (she was on call). But the plot thickens! A famous author comes into the police station, she is afraid that this murder bears a striking similarity to the murder in the second of her detective novels, and she has also noted an earlier murder of a licensed companion also mirrors the murder in her first book. The only thing is the murderer in the first book was a woman and in the second it was a man. But then looking at the footage from the cinema Eve notices that there are striking similarities between a man and a woman they catch on camera - it appears their murderer likes to don disguises.

After interviewing the author Eve is convinced, the third novel concerns the murder of a rock star's former girlfriend, one famous for all the wrong things, who could drag him down to her level if they get back together. Eve gets her team to profile likely skanky ex-girlfriends, sadly there are several, and warns each of them to look out for a woman matching the description in the novel.

I enjoyed this novel, why do all the books I read from this series seem to happen when its bitterly cold? The premise was interesting and kept me engaged. There were lots of promising leads which turned into dead ends. My only gripe is (and this is only based on the two books I have read recently) that there seems to be a need for several murders before the murderer is caught and there needs to be a showdown where they rescue the latest victim in the nick of time - maybe if I read more of the other 57 books I haven't yet read I may find that is just a coincidence in these two.

Also, who doesn't want to read about a future where a New York cop can marry a former thief billionaire and has an Auto Chef in her car which can dispense a multitude of drinks?

I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley.

Actually 4.75⭐️

I also read this while on vacation and am hooked on Nora Roberts J.D. Robb mysteries. Usually I gravitate towards romcoms, but the In Death series is great.

Would recommend to others.

“Dark in Death” is a late installment in the long running Eve Dallas “In Death” series. It delivers exactly what readers will expect, and that’s no bad thing – these novels are tightly written and very enjoyable.

The In Death novels stand alone, plot wise, although the characters develop through the series. This should, therefore, be enjoyed by both new and continuing readers of the series.

In this installment, Dallas investigates a series of murders that appear to mimic scenes from a crime author’s novels. This isn’t a particularly new plot idea – I’ve come across it in multiple novels, TV shows, and even movies. However, Robb handles it with the usual solid plotting and rapid action of the In Dark books, and it’s interesting and engaging.

This is a character based story concerned with what people do to each other and why. The central victim is perhaps more unhinged than logical, but it works.

These are crime novels with a light sheen of science fiction. They’re set in the 2050s (and later) United States, after an episode of civil war. Certain scientific advances are taken for granted – ones that grow quite naturally out of today’s technology. Readers won’t find them jarring or lacking credibility. In other respects, it’s a society still very like todays’.

The novels also tend to have a romantic sub plot, usually focusing on Dallas and her husband, the former criminal Roarke. I enjoy the way that Robb still focuses on the depth and passion of their relationship, and their appreciation of each other, even though they have now been married for many novels.

I enjoyed this a great deal and would recommend it both to readers familiar with the “In Dark” series and those coming to it new.

Loved reading the engaging and amazing story. When a women is murdered in a theatre, Eve Dallas with Peabody are on the case which ends up being a serial killer following the murders in fiction series books. Read the highly recommended, wonderfully written, and another must read riveting story by the phenomenal author, J.D. Robb.

I liked the book. The killer is revealed early in the book and their motive, but we don’t know exactly who it is until the end. I liked the characters and I liked how they develop over the series.

This book is part of a series that I have enjoyed reading from the first book. I also enjoy this author's writing style and their attention to details that make the twists and turns come to life and edge sitting. I found this book to be well written and hard to put down. This is an engaging story that is suspenseful and easy to read. In this story Eve is back in another mystery where an impulse stab one night starts something that is just wrong. I enjoy Eve's character and what she adds to the story. I also enjoyed how supportive the other characters including Galahad (her cat) were throughout the story. They are connectable, relateable characters that made the story easy and entertaining to read. This is a story you do not want to miss. I highly recommend this story and series.

I had not read anything from J. D. Robb before and was given a free copy of this book. I really enjoyed the mystery. I loved the interaction between Eve and Roarke and the mystery story was first rate. The story keeps you engrossed and I couldn't put it down. It is possible to read the story without reading the previous books, but I immediately went out and bought the first books in the series to find out more of the back story on Eve and her mysteriously rich husband.

Like many other reviewers, I wonder if Nora Roberts wrote this book. It is very unlike the others in this series and most of her other books. Many of the characters we all know from so many of her books were in it but were different and it seemed like the author just threw them in because they are characters we are familiar with. The plot was rather weak. In addition, throughout the book, there was so much jumping around that I often had to re-read and figure out who this person was in the greater story. The old, familiar characters were there, but they just did not act or speak in ways I could recognize. It was interesting that Nora Roberts took a so-called author and her books and then used their plots and killers as the basis for this one, but it just didn’t come across as well as I think it could have. I guess this was just and off-book, one not like her others. I hope she returns to the Nora Roberts I and all the others have come to know and love in er next books. I am looking forward to them. I received this from NetGalley to read and review.

Dark on Death is an excellent thriller and I read it in one go. I believe it’s book 46 in the series and the fact this can still remain a gripping series is a testament to the great writing style of the author. This one pulled me in right away as a young women is murdered at a showing of an old film. Something that is a regularly scheduled event at a local theater and is a big favorite among budding actors and actresses as well as film students in the area m. It becomes quickly evident that the circles within circles all mingled on the fringes and almost everyone is somehow related in some way complicating the investigation. I loved seeing the wheels turn in this one and as always the shocking twists and turns kept me up late. Another great job and a definite great read!
